English

There are films that move you differently depending on the degree of identification you find in them, it can be as simple as a feeling that emerges between two people or a scene that is familiar to you.

There are also those scenes that impact you in a very particular way because they touch a social experience that extends to the human and dehuman essence that starts from a power relationship of an ethnic group over another, such as films that deal with slavery, wars between peoples and this one that we will discuss this Wednesday 11/30/2022 in the program Encounters of Wellbeing referring to that sad stain left in the modern world and that we know as the Holocaust.

When I saw the film for the first time, I remember that it had a great impact on me because of its rawness, because of the experience of a social group whose life is disrupted overnight, plunging it into that dark pit of discrimination, physical and moral aggression, total defenselessness and the palpable understanding of the lightness of life.

When I saw it for the second time, this reality confronted me in a closer way, with all the distance that may exist between one and the other reality, there are flashes in this film that touched some fibers of my sensibility in a special way, such as fear, uncertainty, learning to keep quiet and to walk with a low profile in some areas of social life.

This is the context where our central character "The Pianist" is placed, a story based on the life of the pianist Władysław Szpilman of Jewish origin, starring Adrien Brody and directed by the controversial filmmaker Roman Polanski (2002).

It was not entirely easy for me to focus on the emotional aspects, motivation and situation management which is the central point of our "discussion" in the film forum, however, it immediately highlights in the character the value of the family as a true nucleus of integration, where harmony and the search for solutions is done in a consensual climate.

Władysław, as a "man of peace" at all times seeks conciliation, agreements, mediation. Gradually and as it goes on, the film shows his disbelief for the changes that occur in his environment and he changes with them, Adapting? No, I think that like most of the Jews who lived through that historical moment they could not find their capacity to respond to such an overwhelming situation that the only possibility to survive was to remain silent, to try to flee, to hide, to become invisible.

Władysław, was no exception: fear, sadness, loneliness, hunger and cold became his companions and from there the purest survival instinct emerges.

Undoubtedly, our character adds to his instinct the social recognition he has as a masterful pianist, finding support and protection throughout the war both from the Jews themselves and from civilian Germans. It also highlights his capacity for resilience and that stoic characteristic of controlling himself and accepting what he cannot change in the external world.

Towards the end of the film and the war an unexpected event occurs, a German captain discovers him and spares his life after placing him in front of a piano and playing for him in an exceptional way, from that moment the military begins to bring him food and gives him shelter, the truth that I had in my imagination that the fact was due to the recognition of the military to the talent of Władysław at the piano.

However, this time I wanted to know who that German was and I found a video about the real life Hosenfeld where they try to vindicate this person, since there are testimonies of more than sixty people he saved, during this sad historical event.
