Lao Tzu is said to have stated, "One should not go backward, not even to gain momentum." In general, he is right. Moving forward is the natural direction of progress. However, there are times when it is necessary to take a step back. When you have taken the wrong path, when the strategy is not working, or when exhaustion clouds your judgment, stepping back to properly analyze the situation and then resuming the journey with greater clarity is not defeat; it is intelligence. Insisting on a wrong direction because you do not want to take a step back is stubbornness, not perseverance.

A much-repeated quote from John Lennon is: 'Make love, not war.' I wish everyone would follow it. It's a laudable ideal. But reality is more complex. Unfortunately, there's a time for everything: a time to love and a time to fight. We must fight for peace, for our dignity, for what we believe is right, for our professional and personal future. Absolute passivity can allow your rights, or the rights of those you love, to be trampled upon. The struggle, when it is for a just cause and with proportionate means, is not a failure of love, but its defense.

The phrase "The end justifies the means" has been used to defend all kinds of actions. But this is not always the case. In fact, it rarely is. There are times when people do unjustifiable things in the name of a just cause or end, and that is not acceptable. Corrupt means taint even the purest end. Integrity in the process is as important as the final objective. Losing your humanity on the path to a goal means you've failed, regardless of whether you reach it.

And then there's that popular saying: "the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else," often used in matters of the heart. The idea is that a new relationship heals the pain of the old one. But that's not the case. At least, not always. Most of the time, what happens is a mistake made out of spite. You use someone as an emotional band-aid, which is unfair to them and to yourself. You don't heal, you just get distracted. Pain needs to be processed, not masked. True healing comes from self-knowledge and time, not from simply replacing it.

That's why I insist: every rule, however wise, finds its exception in the complexity of real life. Wisdom lies not in automatically applying maxims, but in developing the judgment to know when to follow them and when to adapt them to your unique circumstances. Think, analyze, and decide for yourselves.

Se dice que Lao Tsé afirmó: 'No hay que ir para atrás ni para tomar impulso'. En general, tiene razón. Avanzar es la dirección natural del progreso. Sin embargo, hay ocasiones en que sí es necesario dar un paso atrás. Cuando te has equivocado de camino, cuando la estrategia no funciona o cuando el agotamiento nubla tu juicio, retroceder para analizar bien la situación y luego reanudar el camino con más claridad no es una derrota, es inteligencia. Insistir en una dirección errónea por no querer dar un paso atrás es terquedad, no perseverancia.

Una frase de John Lennon muy repetida es: 'Haz el amor y no la guerra'. Ojalá y todos la siguieran. Es un ideal loable. Pero la realidad es más compleja. Lamentablemente hay un tiempo para todo: un tiempo para amar y otro para pelear. Hay que pelear por la paz, por nuestra dignidad, por lo que creemos correcto, por nuestro futuro profesional y personal. La pasividad absoluta puede permitir que pisoteen tus derechos o los de quienes quieres. La lucha, cuando es por una causa justa y con medios proporcionados, no es un fracaso del amor, sino su defensa.

Se ha usado la frase 'El fin justifica los medios' para defender todo tipo de acciones. Pero no siempre es así. De hecho, rara vez lo es. Hay veces que las personas hacemos cosas injustificables en nombre de una causa o fin justo, y eso no es aceptable. Los medios corruptos manchan incluso el fin más puro. La integridad en el proceso es tan importante como el objetivo final. Perder tu humanidad en el camino hacia una meta, significa que has fracasado sin importar si la alcanzaste.

Y está ese dicho popular: 'un clavo saca a otro clavo', muy utilizado en el amor. La idea es que una nueva relación cura el dolor de la anterior. Pero no es así. Al menos, no siempre. La mayoría de las veces, lo que se comete es un error por despecho. Usas a una persona como parche emocional, lo que es injusto con ella y contigo mismo. No sanas, solo te distraes. El dolor necesita ser procesado, no enmascarado. La verdadera superación viene del autoconocimiento y el tiempo, no del simple reemplazo.

Por eso, insisto: toda regla, por sabia que sea, encuentra su excepción en la complejidad de la vida real. La sabiduría no está en aplicar máximas de forma automática, sino en desarrollar el criterio para saber cuándo seguirlas y cuándo adaptarlas a tu circunstancia única. Piensen, analicen y decidan por ustedes mismos.
