Forbidden Flowers / Flores Prohibidas (ENG/ESP)

It came again, and whispered softly as usual “Jacob, Jacob, Jacob, my flowers”. I have been hearing this voice every night, at exactly 12:am for the past 2 months. I tried everything I could to make it stop. He called my name three times and kept asking for his flowers. I kept telling him I don’t owe him flowers anymore; he just wouldn’t listen. He still wanted his flowers.

My name is Jacob, I am 26 years old. I was born into a nice family. My parents loved each other and made sure I didn’t lack anything. They gave me a good education and made sure I enjoyed my childhood. We were only three; my dad, my mom, and I. Thursdays were for family movie nights; we would watch my favorite movie together. Afterwards, my parents would sing my favorite song before I finally went to sleep.

Everything seemed perfect, not until I turned 13. My parents started to quarrel every day, they stopped loving each other like they used to, and when they couldn’t bear it any longer, they divorced. Who knew my parents would ever divorce? They were like the perfect couple, every other couple envied them.

My dad moved out of the house and came to pack his things after 3 days. It was now my mom and me alone. The only thing I liked about the divorce was that I enjoyed 2 movie nights; on Wednesdays in my dad’s apartment and on Thursdays with my mom. Even though my parents got divorced, none of them stopped loving me. My dad would stop by every Thursday to visit me.

My mom got a job outside town that paid really well, she had no choice but to accept the job; we really needed money. My mum didn’t want me to stay with my dad and I couldn’t stay alone, so she took me to grandpa’s house.

I was 13 when I moved into grandpa’s house. Grandpa was the coolest and nicest person I’ve ever met. He treated me, not like a grandson but like his own son. We played like kids; I made him do ridiculous things. I remember one Halloween when I made him dress like a lady zombie. He did it willingly. My mom visited twice a month; my dad also visited once a month.

A few days after my 22nd birthday, the worst thing happened to me; my grandfather passed on. My world shattered; my only friend left without even saying goodbye. I felt betrayed. But a part of me understood that he was old enough to be called by his creator.

I started staying alone in grandpa’s house. I started working in a restaurant close to where I lived. I didn’t need my parent’s help because I could afford the basic things I needed. Though, my parents still continued to visit me as usual.

Grandpa was buried in the town’s cemetery. I was really close to him and couldn’t go a week without visiting his grave. I visited his grave a lot. I spent nothing less than two hours anytime I visited him. I always made sure I told him everything that happened to me that week.

Every time I visited grandpa’s grave, I always took flowers. My mom, my dad, and some of my grandpa's friends visited too and they always took flowers. My grandpa’s grave resembled a florist’s shop. Bouquets of beautiful flowers were always on his grave.

It was really nice to see that grandpa was cherished by a lot of people. But I felt bad for the guy that was buried next to grandpa. He died on January 1st, aged 32 years. I felt somehow, while grandpa was getting dozens per day. I decided to do something nice for the deceased guy by buying him flowers anytime I came to visit. It was a secret. I told no one about it. I felt I was changing the world 1 bouquet of flowers at a time. Soon enough, it became a part of me, I started visiting my dad and the guy next to him every two days. And each time, I went with two bunches of flowers; one for grandpa and one for the guy next to him. I came to think of him as a friend, just like I did with grandpa, I started telling him everything about my life. Then one day, I decided to find out more about him, so I searched for his name on the internet. After a few minutes of searching, I found him.

BIG SHOCKER! Turn’s out the guy wasn’t getting any flowers because he was a murderer. He killed his wife on New Year’s Eve and also killed her brother, parents, and her pet. The next morning, which was the first day of the new year, he stabbed himself 5 times. He managed to crawl to the front door where a passerby saw his dead body and called the police. No one left him flowers ever since he was buried, no one except for me. I left him flowers thrice a week. I did that for more than 3 years.

I felt bad for his dead wife and her family. I was so mad at myself. What was I thinking! I should have searched for him before I started giving him flowers. There was nothing much I could do, other than to stop giving him flowers.

Two days later, it was time to visit my grandpa and I went three with only one bunch of flowers, of course, for my grandpa. I spent more than 5 hours with grandpa that day, I told him everything about the guy next to him. When I got home, it was already late, so I took my bath and slept. “Jacob,” a silent voice whispered. I got up right away. “It must’ve been a dream,” I said to myself. I checked my phone and it was exactly12 am. I went to the kitchen and fixed myself a snack.

Two days later, after I got back from grandpa’s, the same thing happened. But this time, the voice called my name twice.” It must’ve been a dream” again, I said to myself. The next time I heard the voice was two days later, this time I heard the voice clearly and I was sure it wasn’t a dream. “Jacob, Jacob, Jacob, my flowers” The voice sounded masculine. Immediately, I remembered the guy next to my grandfather; the murderer. I started hearing the voice after I stopped bringing him flowers. I couldn’t sleep the whole night. A lot of things were going on in my head. “What should I do? “Should I give him a flower the next time I visit? I finally made up my mind not to give the murderer any flowers and endure whatever it is he does to me.

For two months, I endured his screams at night. Then one night, I felt a hand touching my head. I woke up immediately and tried to scream, but I couldn’t. I went numb for about two minutes.

I’ve had enough now, I had to do something. I couldn't bear it anymore. The next morning, I found out where his wife’s family was buried, bought flowers , and went there. As I was standing at their graves, apologizing for all that I had done, a woman came and stood behind me and asked me who I was. Apparently, she was the wife’s sister. I told her everything and she said it was okay and told me her name was Maya.

That was the last time I heard his voice. Maya and I started talking. Two years later, I proposed to her and she said yes. Today, we are happily married with two kids.

Me llamo Jacob, tengo 26 años.

Me sentí traicionado.

Me levanté enseguida.

Maya y yo empezamos a hablar.
