Las Naciones Unidas intentan cambiar esta realidad, estableciendo en la zona un campamento de los cascos azules donde se prestan servicios de atención médica, comedores populares, agua potable y recientemente, se añadió una pequeña escuela para formar a niños y adultos, teniendo como meta, que por lo menos aprendan a leer y escribir en un corto periodo de tiempo, ya que esta debilidad de conocimiento, es una de las que le da mayor poder de control sobre la población a los traficantes de oro y diamantes, quienes se aprovechan de su analfabetismo para engañarlos y llevarlos a las minas, desde donde normalmente nunca regresan.
A su llegada al campamento, la joven maestra es recibida por un Coronel Australiano responsable de la base, quien le indica todas las precauciones que debe tener en el área, agregando además que su trabajo tiene que ser completamente imparcial y no puede involucrarse políticamente con ningún grupo y mucho menos, opinar en los temas religiosos o tratos de los familiares para con sus hijos.
Aparentemente, la cultura de este sitio es muy diferente a lo que está acostumbrada en las ciudades donde tuvo la oportunidad de dictar programas de formación anteriormente, aquí las personas actúan con violencia y están sometidas en un espiral de abuso y maltrato que podría impresionar a cualquiera que venga desde el exterior y no comprenda las raíces de sus actos justificados por temas sensibles como la religión o la etnia a la que pertenecen.
Con asombro por las advertencias, la maestra acepta apegarse a las reglas. Luego de instalarse, decide dar un pequeño paseo por el área de comedores para familiarizarse con el lugar, en ese momento escucha el retumbar de un plato de metal estrellándose contra el piso, seguido de golpes y gritos, prácticamente paralizada, siente como los soldados corren a su lado y la sacan del sitio, mientras intentan controlar a un hombre enfurecido que estaba golpeando a su esposa sin contemplación delante todos los presentes, aparentemente, porque le ensucio con salsa de la comida, la camisa blanca con la que debía rezar.
En ese momento, Imana se dio cuenta de que si realmente quería hacer algo para ayudar a estas personas, debía primero que nada ganarse su confianza, dotarlos del poder del conocimiento, pero también proporcionarles un motivo para vivir, cosas que hacer, enseñarles un oficio o arte que les permitiera obtener ingresos propios fruto de su trabajo. Sin embargo, ella sabía que la barrera a saltar para lograr esa meta sería bastante alta, sobre todo por el tema del machismo y la denigración que se ejecuta contra las mujeres como política de vida.
La maestra en principio no aceptó adultos en sus clases, se enfocó fundamentalmente en crear una gran amistad y confianza con los niños quienes en poco tiempo la adoraban, inevitablemente de allí surgió una relación directa con las madres, que fue el punto principal de su estrategia para poder llegarle de manera amigable a estas mujeres temerosas, que acumulaban en sus cuerpos años de maltrato.
No fue fácil lograr que alguna de ellas, siquiera se interesara en estudiar, no querían tomar los libros por miedo a las represalias de sus esposos, otra barrera que debía demoler si procuraba tener algo de éxito, así que improvisadamente empezó por enseñarles música, con el uso de una computadora laptop y el internet satelital de la base, comenzó a producir pequeños espacios de encuentro para ver videos musicales de mujeres famosas, eso permitió que poco a poco fueran perdiendo el temor y cada vez más, las madres de los niños compartieran unos minutos con la maestra.
Sin embargo, Imana concluyó que para dar un paso verdaderamente transcendental debía evadir por completo a los esposos y también a la religión.
