Hi there! I haven't posted for a while as I didn't have that much time on my hands, but here's another article that could help out newer players.

You probably have the same goal as I do - rise higher in the rankings and leagues to benefit more from the game.

Of course, you can throw down a lot of cash and gain a lot of fancy cards. But to make a couple of balanced splinter decks for various battle situations you'll need to throw down a lot.

And that is just for the bronze league. To be fairly competitive in higher leagues the cost will be even higher.

Most of the players obviously don't see that as an option. More likely it's free gameplay or a small monthly investment.

As new cards have been released it's probably tempting to rent out a good deck for the daily quest and go for silver or gold league to gain more chests. But a well-made deck for silver/gold with rented cards could cost you ~1000 DEC, add a quest potion to that and it's already 1750 DEC.

And that is just for one quest potion, one specific splinter plus neutral cards. Maybe you can fit also a secondary (dragon) summoner to expand your options if your chosen splinter is not available for battle due to the conditions.

But even with two summoners, it would make you more predictable to your opponent and he could take measures to counter your deck thus making your daily quest completion harder.

And lastly the rewards from the daily quest. Let's take for example that you make Gold II league which would give you 7 chests. Add another 5 from the potion and you get 12.

1750 DEC at the moment goes for ~10$. Now, even a 50% chance of rewards being a card would make it hard to cover your expenses. Let's say you get 6 cards. The chances of them being quite expensive or even legendary/gold foil is not that high.

More likely at the end of the day, you'll gain back ~60 - 70% of your investment unless you have a lucky day. And luck is one thing that is not sustainable.

Sure, you could score a very high-cost card. But will it really happen, and after how much time and DEC spent?

That's why I decided to drop high-level play with rentals and go back to building my own deck piece by piece.

Patience is the key in this game.

Of course, the bronze league is less exciting and at the same time - less rewarding. But that's why patience is so important. In a longer period of time with smarter spending, you'll most likely gain more than with flashy high-cost rental play.

With correct choices and some patience, you'll get to the silver league with your own cards.

Now then what should be your priorities?

Step 1

Start saving up for your own summoners. For this one, a small investment would help out a lot. But after that, you'll start saving up bit by bit every day that you previously used for renting out the cards.

If investing is not an option fear not, there is an alternative in step 3.

In the bronze league you can use summoners:

  • level 3 common
  • level 2 rare
  • level 2 epic
  • level 1 legendary

Some of the more powerful or even starter summoners that are available for you right away will be quite costly. But you don't necessarily need them at the very start.

There are quite a few rare level 2 summoners that you can obtain at a reasonable price and gain an edge over your opponents.

I myself went with two of them:

Owster comes from the death splinter and has a nice ability - reflect. With it, the whole deck automatically gains a strong counter against magic teams.

He's great also to counter the feared Llama + Kron combo

You can check out a sample battle here. Or simply click on the image bellow.

As you can see he has some nice use in various situations. The only downside is that he's a bit costly. One level 1 card goes for ~11 to 12$. which makes a level 2 version at ~60$. But in my eyes, it's well worth it.

Sure, I save only ~220 DEC per month in rental payments for a level 2 version, but it's just a single card. There will be others that I'll not have to pay for.

It may not seem much to you, but if you count all the rentals per day together you'll notice that you can save quite a bit and use that amount to build your deck further.

As I said previously - it's a long term game and patience is a virtue.

Ok, let's get back to the cards and the second summoner that I decided to pick up.

This card comes from a dragon splinter and has the flying ability. And as an added bonus he can be paired with any other splinter in case the one that you're most comfortable with isn't available.

Flying ability is especially useful in earthquake battles. That way you don't have to worry about the extra damage as your whole team will be protected from it.

And the second thing I like is the extra dodge chance from melee or ranged monsters. Flying gives an additional 25% dodge chance against a monster that does not have it.

Here's the full formula for evasion:

(Speed Difference x 10%) + 25% (if there is dodge) + 25% (if there is flying but it won't work on other flying troops or snare troops) + 15% (if there is blind) = Evade Chance

If you play it right and adjust the speed on your and opponent's deck you can make him miss most of his attacks.

Step 2

As you gain more than one level 2 summoner start thinking about getting some neutral splinter cards at a higher level. Although you should think about that once you gain even your first one.

At level one most neutral splinters could look more like fillers. But as they level up they become quite powerful and very useful in various situations.

Additionally, you'll be able to use these cards with any other splinter unless the battle rules do not allow it.

That way your newly created level 2 summoner will be somewhat powerful right from the start even if you have no higher-level cards from that specific splinter.

If you check out the battle that I've linked then you'll see that it mostly consists of neutral splinter monsters.

Don't look down on them - they are very useful for any splinter that you pick.

Step 3

Blog about the game on Splintertalk, hive, or any other platform.

This is so important if you play for free that I cannot stress enough.

In my first month of playing, I made ~80$ worth of SPT and HIVE just by writing about the game. I could have made way more, but I didn't have that much time on my hands to write more often.

If you're a free player this will help you tremendously. With help of few articles, you could gain two level 2 summoners in a month.

In the second you could upgrade some key monsters from specific or neutral splinters. And in the third one, you could start thinking about your third cheep summoner. Or a more expensive one.

On top of that count in also the saved DEC from rentals and gained from ranked battles.

It is slow at the beginning, but it gets more exciting as time goes on and you stick to your plan.

Even if you're a player that can invest some amount of money in the game don't look down on this option. This will be quite a boost to your overall game experience.

So what can you gain by renting less and owning more cards?

For example, let's say you're in the bronze league and you gain ~5 DEC per win and make some 18 wins per 24h.

Most likely at the start, you'll not have all the required cards even with leveled summoners, so you'll rent some cards here and there. But there are many useful ones that are cheap to rent.

Try to spend on rentals at least 2x less than previously when you had no summoner cards on your own.

Without rentalsWith rentals
ranked reward9090
rental expenses3070
Profit per day6020
Profit per month1800600

As you can see, you'll start making some nice profit just from the battles not counting in the rewards from your single daily quest chest + season rewards.

Add your profits from blogging and you'll be looking at a nice sum to work with.

Do note that most of the time the quest potions in the bronze league will result in a loss unless you get lucky and get something good.

So my advice would be to restrain using them even if it hurts reading how others gain the new cards. Mostly it will be cheaper to buy a card that you really want instead of gambling with quest potions.

You could get lucky, but you could also lose a few hundred DEC if your rewards ain't that great that day.
