Another week, another share your battle challenge. This time we get to play around with a legendary Monster which is rarely the case in these challenges. The Monster in question is one of the best support Monsters in the Chaos Legion set, namely the Spirit Hoarder. The Spirit Hoarder is a neutral Monster, which is great at supporting the back-line of its team, and also at clearing the enemy buffs while causing their Melee and Ranged attacks to miss more often.

Now before getting into the stats discussion of the Monster, let's have a sneak peek into his LORE

Well it sure does seem that looks are deceitful and even though the Spirit Hoarder seems pretty friendly at first sight, it does live up to its name, taking and imprisoning the souls of those on both sides of the battlefield.

Alright, we've got some idea of who Spirit Hoarder is, after glancing at its lore. Let us now have a look at its stats and abilities at different key levels.

image.png

  • It starts off with 1 Magic Attack, 1 Speed, 0 Armor and 3 Health, but most importantly it has the Triage ability right from the start, which allows it to heal the back-line of its team.
  • At level 2 it gains the Dispel ability which allows it to dispel any buffs on the enemy targets hit by its attacks.
  • At level 3 it gains yet another great Ability - Blind (All enemy Melee & Ranged attacks have an increased chance of missing their target).
  • Finally maxed out at level 4 it has 2 Magic Attack, 1 Speed, 0 Armor and 3 Health. It does not gain any additional abilities but the ones it already has are more than adequate for its Mana Cost and overall power level.

Now that we know what the card does (or doesn't do) at the different levels of play, let us have a look at the battle I have chosen to showcase.

<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BATTLE<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>

  • The line-up of the Battle and the Ruleset:

image.png

The rulesets for this battle are Wands Out (Only Monsters with Magic attack may be used in battles),Explosive Weaponry (All Monsters have the Blast ability) and Equal Opportunity (All Monsters have the Opportunity ability). The mana budget is 55 which is significantly above average. Three Splinters are available - Earth, Life, and Death. Even though I can showcase the Spirit Hoarder using any of the available Splinters as it is a Neutral Monster, I have decided to use the Earth Splinter in this case as this is the Splinter I most often actually get to use it with. The fact that only Monsters with Magic attacks can be used definitely calls for a recently released summoner who has quickly become my personal favorite. You will see who that is after the next section.

image.png

First in the line-up due to his considerable health pool is the Suidae Shaman. The Suidae Shaman is one of the Rift Watcher additions to the toolkit of the Earth Splinter, and while I generally do not play Recharge (This Monster attacks every other round but does 3x damage) Monsters very often, I actually enjoy playing this one in particular quite a lot, specifically in high mana battles. It's really good at vaporizing enemy Giants with its Giant Killer ability paired with Recharge.

The 2nd spot is for the Goblin Psychic. It is a truly potent Monster with its Tank Heal, Affliction and Silence abilities. I love using it whenever I can as long as it makes sense of course, and it usually does.

image.png

image.png

Following immediately after the Goblin Psychic is our protagonist this week - the Spirit Hoarder. I've got it in this spot to be protected from splash damage as long as possible while triaging its allies who are taking the blast hits instead of it.

image.png

image.png

4th in the line-up is Queen Mycelia. She is probably one of the best support Monsters in the game (if not the best) with her Protect (All friendly Monsters gain +2 Armor), Amplify (Increases Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns damage to all enemy monsters by 1), and Triage (Heals the friendly back-line Monster that has taken the most damage) abilities. You can never go wrong with including her in your line-up unless the rule sets render her abilities useless.

image.png

image.png

The 5th place in the line-up goes to another new RW addition - Runemancer Florre. I like using her a lot in high mana battles as well since I find her to be a Monster with a very good damage output thanks to her dual attack - Ranged/Magic, and she can also take a few hits if she has to thanks to her 13 Health.

image.png

image.png

Last but definitely not least is the Mycelic Slipspawn. There are generally 3 spots I usually place Monsters with taunt - 2nd position (if I'm certain I won't get "Yodin-ed"), last position, if I do feel I might get wrecked by Explosive Weaponry or Main tank for the times when Melee Monsters cannot be played or I really want to land direct heals on the said Monster. In this case I have decided to place it at the back of the line-up and hopefully The Spirit Hoarder and Queen Mycelia will be able to keep it up with their Triage ability.

It is time for a quick round by round analysis:

  • The Summoner I am going with for this battle (as you might have guessed) is my very own Immortalis. I actually maxed him out earlier today but the battle we are going to witness is from Gold league so that does not matter for the outcome of this battle in particular. Immortalis is specifically great for the Wands Out ruleset due to the Void ability (Reduced damage from Magic attacks) he provides to all friendly Monsters. I have my Mycelic Slipspawn at the back with Runemancer Florre right next to it so that they can be healed from any incoming damage by the Spirit Hoarder and Queen Mycelia. Moveover Florre has a very large health pool, so this should allow her to survive the incoming splash damage even for as long as the Slipspawn is also alive. By the looks of it my opponent has a fairly similar strategy. One thing I don't understand is why the Splispawn is placed in the 5th and not the 6th spot of the enemy back-line. This could be very crucial for the outcome of the battle.

image.png

  • After 1 round both "tanks" are still standing, however, there are a few notable things here. First of all thanks to the Silence provided by my Goblin Psychic my Monster are taking basically 0 splash damage and that's just super. On the other hand you can see that the position of the enemy Splispawn is wrecking the enemy back line and Queen Mycelia can't keep up. Even Kron has some trouble keeping himself up. On the other hand my Slipspawn is at full health, unfortunately the enemy Dr. Blight has managed to cast Affliction on it so it will no longer be a legitimate target for the friendly healers.

image.png

  • At the start of Round 3 the enemy has lost two Monsters while none of mine have perished yet, and the enemy Pelacor is also about to die to the first Monster with more than 1 Magic Attack that hits it. The enemy Dr. Blight has not managed to accumulate any additional health points at all.

image.png

  • Round 4 - all that is left for me is to finish off Dr. Blight and Kron. This was a relatively easy victory not without the kind assistance of the enemy tactician who chose that awkward spot for their Slipspawn given the fact that the battle had the Explosive Weaponry ruleset active.

image.png

  • While my victory seemed relatively easy, Splintertools.io actually shows that I had a.... 100% chance to win.. So definitely nothing surprising here. Defeat does not seem to have been an option.

The Spirit Hoarder is a great Neutral Support Monster, specifically adept at healing the back-line of your team. It could be useful at level 1 but, of course, if you want to use it with no potential RP penalty in the League you are competing in and take advantage of the additional abilities it gains, it is a good idea to get enough copies and level it to the respective level. At $5.30 per BCX it is one of the more accessible Legendaries of the Chaos Legion lot, especially compared to our Queen Mycelia, whose price is currently 2x.
