Documenting My Splinterlands Knowledge: Tournaments

in Splinterlandslast year

Hello there.

I am interrupting my ongoing Splinterlands posts [Documenting My Splinterlands Knowledge: Rentals], with a topic about the Splinterlands Tournaments. If you're a new player, and haven't heard/played it, then you are missing out on a lot. You can view the tournaments page by clicking the 'Events' icon on the top; next to the 'Battle' and 'Guilds'. You will then see the different tournaments available:

The tournaments can be grouped into two, one is Splinterlands created [sps.tournaments], and the other is player created. Before joining any tournament, check out the schedule to make sure you are available when it starts. All Splinterlands tournaments have been 24hrs/round, which means you have a whole day to enter your teams. Other tournaments have 1hr/round, or some even have just 3mins to enter your team per battle.

The next thing you want to look at are the 'Rules' and 'Entry'. For newer players, I would suggest the Novice tournaments. Those restrict Legendary card usage, and all cards are at level 1. The entry is also in DEC, and usually costs 5-10 DEC. Once you click the 'View' or 'Entered' you will be shown the details page of the tournament.

You will then see some of the requirements to join the tournament. For Splinterlands tournaments, the requirements are usually just the minimum Staked SPS, and the minimum power. Staked SPS, is literally how much staked SPS you have in your account. You can check yours by clicking the SPS icon on the top right of the screen.

image.png

When there were no SPS rewards yet, it was difficult to increase the staked SPS. But with the SPS rewards in battles, Brawls, and chests, it has become a little bit easier. I started with very low amounts, but I just kept on accumulating from rewards and tournament participation and ended up with 1500+. I still plan on getting more so I can join more tournaments with higher requirements.

The minimum power is dependent on the available set for the tournament. Even if you have a lot of power from Untamed cards, if the tournament is only for the Chaos Legion, then they won't count. For newer players joining the Novice tournaments, try to time it with your rentals so you can maximize them even more. If you are not sure which cards can be used, you can check in 'ITEMS' and then the Set. All the Subset cards are included. Because of the new ruleset that lets people use Gladiator cards in battles, it seems Gladiator card power is included in all Tournament power requirement calculations.

When the tournament starts, you will usually get a reminder on the top right of your screen. You will then go to the EVENTS page, and you can click the 'ENTERED' button on the tournament that you joined. You will then see a similar page as below.

image.png

Starting from the top, there is a timer on when the tournament ends. You have all that time to put in your teams. Your W/L/D record is there. You should be able to see your next opponent, and instead of the "4 of 10" there should be green 'Battle' button there to start your battle. Instead of "Round 2 in progress' it will be Round 1. As you start your battles and you get more results, you will see how you perform against the other players. The ranking is on the left, while the latest battles/updates are on the right.

image.png

If you want to see your opponents, you can check the Battles tab, and you can look who is in your group. Some very competitive players scout their opponents and look at their available cards, and preferences. You can do that too, but I don't. It is too much of a hassle for me. I just play my best team everytime, and hope I win.

Even though there are a lot of tournaments available, not a lot of people join them. That is also the reason why I wanted newer players to join them. If you look at the Details of the tournaments, a lot of them have low entrants:

image.png

If you look at this tournament that I am in, there are only 111 players that signed up. If you look at the Rewards, you are already getting 2SPS for the 10DEC entry fee by just signing up. This is a no lose tournament, and performing well just gets you more rewards.

image.png

The other tournament that I used as an example costs 2SPS to enter. There are currently 106 players that signed up. If the tournament started now, we are all getting a guaranteed 1 additional SPS from our entry fee by just playing. Even if it gets to 256 players, and you don't perform well, you just get your SPS back since the reward is still 2SPS up to the 256th player.

image.png

This is actually one of the tournaments that I want to join in the future. There were only 76 players that joined, But if you look at the Rewards, everyone got a minimum 10 SPS, just for joining. It can take a bit more time but I am accumulating my SPS for the eventual shift from CP to SPS staking in ranked anyways.

Now that you know how to join and play in the tournaments, and how easy it is to start earning more SPS, try joining them now and I hope to see you on my future battles. Apart from the additional SPS, you can also treat this as a training ground for your Brawl battles. I can say that seeing the different teams people used really help me get more ideas for my battles.
