―Me voy a sumergir ―dijo, aun exaltado―.

Terraformation Tales - Memories of an Old World

-Environmental engineer is twelve kilometers from where the gravitational anomaly has occurred, -LUCY said through the communicator.

Iochi continued to advance a few more kilometers and stopped the ship a hundred meters from the location indicated by the AI. She descended to the surface of the water and let it rest afloat, while she put on her waterproof suit and prepared to go out to the upper hull to see with her own eyes what was happening.

-Have you scanned the area with your ship's instruments, -LUCY asked.

-No, not yet, I want to take a look with my own eyes first, -said Iochi, while he was adjusting the hull seals-. Sometimes it's better than using a ship's sensors, - he said.

-I think his statement is objectionable.

-Don't follow LUCY, -interrupted Iochi, who already knew what the AI would say next -. Everyone has their own way of doing things.

He climbed the ladder to the top hatch and opened it to let in the radiant daylight, then he would take care of purging the gases from the cabin, in the end almost 100 % nitrogen would not do any damage to the ship.

He could have gone out wearing only a respirator, but at this early stage of the terraforming, it was preferable to prevent the planet from being contaminated by microorganisms, due to his negligence.

He went out through the hatch and stood on the hull of the ship, looked around and could not see anything unusual, just miles of ocean in any direction. He could feel how the breeze began to blow with great force and the waves began to shake the ship; he bent over and leaned on one of his knees to avoid falling.

Almost as soon as it began to blow in the wind, the sky began to cloud, as if black clouds would form from the nothing. Then he heard a buzzing sound in his right earpiece.

-What's going on, LUCY? -he asked.

-My sensors are again detecting the anomaly about two hundred meters from your location, -said the terraforming AI.

-Yes, something strange is happening here... -After saying this, a brilliant lightning broke the sky, followed by the immense rumble of thunder, which seemed to shake the ship-. Wait, I think I see something...

About two hundred meters away, as LUCY had said, a strange vortex of green light, like a kind of tunnel, appeared, among lightning and thunder, about four meters above the water's surface, a ball shaped object was expelled from the inside of the funnel and fell into the water, sinking almost immediately, after which, the vortex vanished almost immediately, and the sudden bad weather, was cleared in a matter of seconds.

-LUCY, I don't know what the hell I just saw, -said Iochi, completely stunned.

-Yes, environmental engineer, I was able to observe it too, and I don't have an explanation either.

-I'm going to sink, -he said, still exalted-. I have to find out what came out of that thing.

Iochi went down the porthole again, pressed the purge button of the cabin atmosphere, and after the normal air levels were restored, he took off his suit in a hurry. He sat down at the controls and submerged the ship.

The ocean floor of that place, which looked like a graveyard of strange things, he could identify about four machines similar to sports gliders, but with a peculiarly old appearance and with what seemed to be old wind propellers, on his nose or on the sides of the cabin.

He remembered the history classes, in which he was told about the first flying machines used by mankind, several thousand years ago, on Earth. Machines moved by mediocre combustion engines, which faced bloody aerial battles.

Next to these, in the distance, one could also see the silhouette of a gigantic machine, which seemed to be a great ship, sunk from the side, for who knows how long. And in front of it, reflecting the lights of the ship, one could identify the shape of the sphere that had just been expelled by the vortex.

-Can you see all this, too, LUCY, -he asked.

-Yes, environmental engineer, but I don't know the nature and origin of those machines, I've never seen them before.

-Thank goodness you can see it too, so you won't think I'm crazy when I make my report.

He approached the sphere, it looked like a bubble of one and a half meters in diameter, semi opaque and inside you could identify the silhouette of another object. He tried to use the ship's robot arm to grab it, but it seemed to be flexible and he was afraid of breaking it.

The best thing he could do was to put himself back into his airtight suit and leave the ship to hold the sphere with a cargo net, one of those used to hold containers in the ship's cargo area and try to fix it to the hull, to take it to land, where he could check it.

He walked heavily on the irregular ocean floor, until he reached the sphere, had left the ship anchored to the sand, about ten meters behind, observed it carefully and could not see any kind of slit or groove, whatever was inside was completely sealed, as if the sphere had been made around it.

He approached his hand and touched it, the sphere gave way as if it were a soap bubble, and then, imitating even more a bubble, it suddenly burst, leaving a diffuse cloud of white milky liquid that slowly diffused in the water, while what was inside slowly floated, until it touched the ground.

When the cloud of milky liquid cleared, Iochi was able to identify the body curled up in a fetal position, with its back to him, of a short person, not much more than six feet tall, thin and dressed in what appeared to be overalls. He approached in fear and moved him, he was stiff as a doll and his shoulder felt bony and fragile, he turned him over and could see a completely emaciated face, with skin attached to his skull and two slit blue eyes without eyelids, which seemed to see him with a terrified expression.

Iochi jumped back and fell sitting on the sand of the ocean floor, backed up a few centimeters pushing himself with his feet, and remained stunned seeing that emaciated and discarded expression.

-Are you all right environmental engineer? -asked LUCY.

-Yes, LUCY, -he replied-. I'm fine, I'm just a little impressed, you know I've never seen a body in that state, it looks mummified.

-Yes, but it is completely saturated with the liquid that the sphere contained, that is why it did not float to the surface, nor did it disintegrate under pressure, -said LUCY.

-I think there is something written on his overalls, -Iochi said and got up from the floor and approached the body again, moved it again and, just as the bubble had done before, suddenly the body disintegrated in the water, leaving only a cloud of white milky liquid that slowly dispersed -. Damn it, it disintegrated - he said, stunned - did you see what it said in its chest?

-Yes, but it's in an ancient earthly alphabet, the translation I get is what seems to be a name, says "Peter Angel" - answered LUCY -. Does that have any meaning for you?

-Not at all, I am completely on edge,- answered Iochi-. None of this will be believed by anyone in Division.
