The Alien in an Ice Cube

The boy looked in amazement at what for him was a toy, on Arnold's desk, it was like one of those spheres that contained a landscape and that, when turned and returned to its position, hundreds of small shiny flakes simulated falling snow. But that was not a sphere, it was a translucent cube of about twenty centimeters per side and its interior contained a strange insect-like bug, but with a robotic appearance.

-What is it? - finally dared to ask the little boy with a dark complexion and reddish hair.

-It's a strange creature from another world," answered Arnold patiently. -Where has your father gone?

-I don't know, he just told me to wait for him here and not to move," answered the boy without taking his eyes off the object. -And is he alive?

-We don't think so, it has been frozen in that block of ice for at least 12 million years, but its internal structure seems to be quite preserved - Arnoldo answered, almost automatically.

-He's not going to thaw it," continued the boy.

-No, this way we can know everything about it, if we thaw it, it could degrade and be less useful to us," explained Arnold, without looking up from his screen.

-So, what world does it come from, Cerberus, my dad says that everything is frozen there," he continued asking.

-It's not from Cerberus," said the man in a bored tone. -It's from a world you don't know, it has no name and is not habitable.

The boy leaned his cheek on the desk as he continued to look at the strange bug, then he raised his hand with his finger extended and rested it on the ice cube, it wasn't frozen, it was cold at best, like everything else in that office, but its touch wasn't icy and wet like the ice cubes in the refrigerator.

-Don't touch it! -said Arnold, snapping him out of his trance. -He could wake up suddenly.

The astonished boy quickly withdrew his hand and hid it under the table, while he remained observing that curious creature, he continued like that, absorbed to what was happening around him, for some moments, until, before his attentive gaze, it suddenly began to move one of its twelve legs with the appearance of small and sharp claws.

Quickly the boy raised his head as one who suddenly awakens from a dream, to bring his face closer to the ice cube, "Had that really moved?" he thought, and before his awakened eyes, the remaining paws began to move, as if tearing the ice from the inside.

-Mr. Professor ...! -he began to say, to draw attention to what was happening, but he had not finished the sentence, when the ice block broke into a thousand pieces and the bug fell with its legs in the air on the desk.

At the same time, the boy jumped out of his chair and stopped at the side of the table to watch how the bug turned around and from its strange metallic-looking armor, two pairs of wings, like those of a giant dragonfly, spread out and began to flutter, lifting it from the desk and making it flutter around Arnold's office.

-Quickly, we must catch it again! -Arnold shouted, as he rummaged through his desk. He pulled out two nets with extendable handles from his drawer and gave one to the boy, who ran after the bug, who, as if he had understood what was happening, flew out of the open door.

The bug flew down the office hallway and the boy ran after it, to the astonished gaze of the students waiting in the hallway. The boy jumped on a chair and extended the net, which in its descent was about to catch the swift alien, but instead caught the head of a teacher who had peeked to see what the commotion was, the boy withdrew the net and after a quick. -Excuse me, Mr. Professor," he continued running after the runaway bug, which was now heading for the reception room off the office corridor.

In the reception room a tired looking lady in a thick sweater of an ugly wine color, jumped up from her desk and foolishly took refuge screaming in a corner, next to the bookshelves, the bug, as if trying to scare her, flew over her head and stopped there hovering, as if watching her.

The boy stopped in front of the woman and threw the net again, but the bug dodged it again and almost repeated its attempt to catch the head of the lady, who, just in time, dropped to her knees, dodging the net.

The bug continued to flutter around the room unable to get out and landed on a shelf, the boy walked stealthily to where he was and before he managed to throw the net again, the bug turned around and looked at him with a pair of piercing bright amber eyes, moved its head from side to side and the pincers coming out of what looked like its mouth moved, as if it was going to articulate some speech.

The boy watched him attentively as if hypnotized, and it was then that, to his surprise, he spoke in his father's voice.

-Wake up, Ivan," said the bug, while the boy felt that he was being gently shaken.

Alarmed Ivan opened his eyes and raised his head, previously resting on the desk, in front of his eyes was the bug still frozen in his ice cube, he blinked shakily and between yawns he saw his father's face, while he gave his hand to Arnold, while with his other hand he touched Ivan's shoulder.

-Come on Ivan, say goodbye to Dr. Arnold," said the boy's father, a young man in his mid-twenties, who was Arnold's graduate student. -Thank you for taking care of him while I was chasing Dr. Balmer.

-No problem, we talked for a while about the NC565b aphid and then he fell asleep watching it," said Arnold as he glanced at Ivan, who for a moment took his eyes off the bug and turned around showing a big smile without two teeth to Arnold.

-See you later, Professor Arnold," said the boy as his father lifted him out of his chair. -Goodbye, Mr. Aphid," he finally said saying goodbye to the bug in the ice bucket.
