Regreso al Halo (parte 18)
Veinticuatro naves, encabezadas por el crucero Radamantis, capitaneado por el vicealmirante Almeida, salieron de impulso a menos de treinta mil kilómetros del planeta alienígena. La mayor flota jamás movilizada por los humanos, en una acción militar, desde la guerra de Cefeo. Más de quinientos drones inus y trescientos cazas multipropósito, acompañaban a la flota de naves de ataque pesadas, en una misión de desembarco y toma de posiciones en el, aparentemente solitario mundo, que por alguna razón tenía una importante parte en la estrategia militar de los alienígenas.
El planeta era completamente inhabitable para los humanos, de hecho, su terraformación habría sido impensable, dada su excesiva gravedad. Se decidió enviar drones robots para que exploraran a fondo la superficie y el lecho oceánico en busca de rastros de los alienígenas, mientras que se establecería una estación de comando en el punto L2 de su órbita, desde donde se mantendría la vigilancia del planeta, a la espera de incursiones alienígenas.
Mientras esto sucedía, se movilizó un nuevo equipo de sondas y drones de reconocimiento que se dirigirían desde BN34, al cuarto nodo en importancia, de la red cuántica de los cristalodermos. Un planeta en el interior del cúmulo globular.
Las sondas salieron de impulso a dos años luz del planeta, primero por las dificultades de trazar un curso para el desplazamiento a velocidades superiores a c, dentro de un espacio con gran población de cuerpos super masivos, como el cúmulo globular y segundo, para evitar los sensores remotos de las múltiples naves alienígenas que aparecían resaltadas como nodos de la red, en los alrededores de este nodo y en general de todo el cúmulo estelar.
Al igual que antes, BEATRIZ, la sonda robótica a cargo de esta misión, disparó una docena de drones que eran guiados a distancia por ella, a través de un enlace cuántico, los drones adquirieron impulso y se escabulleron, usando diferentes rutas entre el campo minado de estrellas super gigantes, desafortunadamente cuatro de ellos, fueron destruidos en su trayecto, al ser triturados por las gigantescas fuerzas gravitacionales, sin embargo los restantes ocho, lograron llegar a destino, mostrando las imágenes de un planeta con la atmosfera arrasada y una superficie calcinada, y agrietada, plagada de cráteres y extrañas edificaciones, destruidas y abandonadas.
―Lo que haya ocurrido allí, no se debe a la gigante roja que orbita, la distancia es muy grande como para que sus fulguraciones puedan causar ese tipo de daño, además, el campo magnético es muy intenso, como para que, de ser alcanzados por una, pueda ocasionar ese tipo de daño ―explicó BEATRIZ, en su transmisión a BN34, que era simultáneamente seguida por Almeida y su equipo en el Radamantis.
―Ese daño no es causado por fulguraciones, son impactos de plasma dirigido ―dijo Almeida.
―¿Que sugiere vicealmirante?, que el planeta fue bombardeado, hasta el extremo de calcinar toda su superficie ―dijo Sorencen, que veía con atención las imágenes transmitidas por los drones.
―Así parece señor presidente, pero eso no parece resultado de un simple ataque ―respondió Almeida ―. Debieron ser muchos años de bombardeos casi continuos ―dijo ―. Estos son los restos de una guerra que debió durar mucho tiempo.
―Permítanme interrumpir señores ―dijo BATRIZ, a través del enlace―. Uno de los drones ha encontrado el origen de la señal cuántica de la red de los cristalodermos, transmito las imágenes del sitio.
Se trataba de lo que había sido una ciudad, completamente devastada por un descomunal bombardeo con armas de plasma. Los pocos restos de edificaciones que aún permanecían en pie habían sido calentados a tal extremo que los silicatos de su superficie se cristalizaron y brillaban ante la luz de los proyectores del dron, causando destellos, que por momentos cegaban los sensores del aparato. En medio de toda aquella destrucción se encontraban también los restos de al menos doce naves alienígenas destruidas, dispersas por el lugar.
―Se trata de los restos de una gran batalla ―dijo De Sousa
―Sí senador y por la desintegración de los isótopos de hidrógeno, parece que ocurrió hace no menos de treinta y ocho mil años ―dijo BEATRIZ ―. Como dijo el vicealmirante este planeta ha estado bajo bombardeo durante varios miles de años, según parece, esto ha ocurrido por los últimos trescientos cincuenta a cuatrocientos mil años.
―Increíble una guerra que ha durado más de trecientos mil años ―exclamó De Sousa.
―Eso no es lo más preocupante ―dijo Almeida ―. Lo que realmente me preocupa es que, quien quiera que sea, el que ha atacado nuestras naves, tiene más de trescientos mil años de experiencia en combate.
