Hello internet people! As some of you know, I not only like video games and good music but also good literature. Reading not only helps reading comprehension, grammar and the enrichment of syntax, but it can also improve our spirits or contribute something significant to society, it can leave us some teaching that enriches our philosophy of life.

It's for this reason that today I want to talk about "Behind the Curtain", a work belonging to Mairene Torres that mixes fiction with her own experiences after having worked in a circus.

Historia/Story

The book takes place in the middle of Paris, France at the time of "La belle Epoque" and begins with the tragic death of the mother of our protagonist, therefore we believe that it will be some drama, however, as the story progresses, it ends up becoming a good dose of suspense and mystery.

The book explores topics such as Freemasonry, vampirism, social relationships in a time when snobbery and prestige stood out above any other need.

We also learn about other cultures such as the gypsy, an ethnic group full of color, music and esotericism. Also, we know the oldest, most striking and dangerous circus acts.

The story development of the characters is quite good, and it is surprising because there are so many of them.

In conclusion, it's quite an interesting and engaging novel, with complex characters and beautiful, chilling and funny stories behind its beautiful red velvet curtain.

Next I will leave an interview with the author about her first literary work:

How did you get the idea to create a story about a circus from the 1890s?

MT: I've always liked the past times and back then, when the idea came up, I was working in a circus, so I just joined my love for the past and my job.

¿Cuál es el secreto para una narrativa tan detallista?/What is the secret to having such a detailed narrative?

MT: It is precisely in the details, I think that as writers we should talk about what we like to read, so that everything flows naturally. I like to read a book with many details, even the smallest so that the images emerge without difficulty in my mind and for that reason I like to write that way, to provide tools to my readers so that they can let their imaginations fly.

¿Tienes anécdotas autobiográficas en tu obra?/Do you have autobiographical anecdotes in your work?

MT: Yes. Some that happened in the circus where I worked and others in some random place where I was, even some characters are based on real people, but of course I use hyperbole to describe some situations. García Márquez already said that a writer who doesn't exaggerate is not a real writer, and
I think that it's a great truth.

Hablemos personajes…¿En qué te inspiraste para crear a Fabrizzio Buonarotti? /Let's talk about characters… what did you draw inspiration from to create Fabrizzio Buonarotti?

MT: It's inspired by the owner of the circus where I worked, but obviously Fabrizzio has exaggerations in his attitude and actions. They both have the same personality and both are capable of maintaining an oppressive atmosphere in the circus when they are there.

¿Y Jack Robinson y Bernardette Lavoissier?

And Jack Robinson and Bernadette Lavoissier? After all, these three are your main characters, although many others are quite relevant in the novel.

MT: Jack is the typical dandy, that classmate or maybe workmate who thought he is the best at everything, the one with the best skills, who has the best body, the best bearing ... Jack was born under the protection of a rich family, which It makes him believe that he deserves everything, but at the same time he is still a simple human being, with all the fragility that that implies. There's a situation in his life that hits him hard enough for him to really find out what he's made of.

MT: Bernadette, is the kind, lofty, friendly girl; a vivid reflection of her mother's personality. Despite being mistreated by Fabrizzio, she doesn't breed resentment or hatred. She is one of those few people in the world and who should abound. This one, like almost all the characters in the novel, experiment a major metamorphosis, an opportunity to discover herself.

There are those who say that Bernadette is a Mary Su, that is to say that she is a reflection of your personality. What do you have to say about it?

MT: No (she says between laughs) she is more what I wants to be than what I am really.

¿Por qué hablas de la masonería y el vampirismo en tu libro?/Why do you talk about Freemasonry and Vampirism in your book?

MT: I think I'm a bit of darkness, so topics of that style attract me a lot, they are topics that are rarely talked about and I like to talk about them, the mystery that it imprints on the novel comes in addition.

Many people who may read this interview or even references about your book, when hearing about Freemasonry, they think that it refers to some type of pagan cult or sect. Could you explain what exactly Freemasonry is about?

MT: Freemasonry is nothing of the kind, it is a rather altruistic organization, made up of people who see the world in a different way. They believe in God and see the world as a construction and him as the “Great Architect”. People are the builders of the world. The purpose within the 33 degrees of Freemasonry is to achieve absolute knowledge. That is the basis of everything, the more knowledge you have, the bigger you get and the more you can contribute to society.

Masons have always been seen as occult sects due to the high degree of symbolism and secrecy surrounding them, but the truth is that there is nothing further from the truth.

Y finalmente ¿Por qué deberíamos leer tu libro?/And finally, why should we read your book?

MT: I am not the one to say "read it for this and for that" I think that each reader sould decide it, but, doing an own analysis, I could describe it as mysterious and with great social content. You can identify with any of the characters and learn from each of them. It is your decision whether you want to read it or not, but I assure you that if you do, you will love it.
