Saludos amigos, el fin de semana pasado estuvo de cumpleaños mi mamá y, evidentemente, lo celebramos; pero quiero compartir unas reflexiones que hice al respecto ya que debido al tiempo de pandemia y confinamiento que estamos viviendo este tipo de actos tienen hoy un significado especial.
Este significado le viene del hecho que como hay que evitar las aglomeraciones el número de asistentes es reducido, lo mismo respecto al hecho de que – al menos aquí en Venezuela – el transporte es escaso, por lo cual, personas que quisieran o que quisiéramos estuviesen no pueden hacerlo.
También es de destacar que estas celebraciones deben hacerse en un horario pre-establecido puesto que ya existe uno para que todos retornen a sus hogares, normalmente aquí en Venezuela, específicamente en Barquisimeto, ya a las 6:00pm todos suelen estar o en sus casas o camino a ellas (en días más estrictos, incluso antes).
No obstante, lo que quiero resaltar aquí es que a pesar de todo esto, siempre es importante encontrar y hasta crear estos espacios de celebración. He aquí las razones que veo:
Greetings friends, last weekend my mother had a birthday and, obviously, we celebrated it; but I want to share some reflections that I made about it since due to the time of pandemic and confinement that we are living this type of acts have a special meaning today.
This meaning comes from the fact that since crowds must be avoided, the number of attendees is reduced, the same with respect to the fact that - at least here in Venezuela - transportation is scarce, so people who would like to be there or who we would like to be there cannot do it.
It should also be noted that these celebrations must be done on a pre-established schedule since there is already one for everyone to return to their homes, normally here in Venezuela, specifically in Barquisimeto, by 6:00pm everyone is usually either at home or on their way home (on stricter days, even earlier).
However, what I want to emphasize here is that in spite of all this, it is always important to find and even create these spaces of celebration. Here are the reasons I see:
- La vida es hoy y no sabemos nada o muy poco sobre el mañana. En la celebración de un cumpleaños esto se manifiesta de manera especial, pues, la alegría de este día nace de que estamos contentos por el simple hecho de existir.
Este regalo de la existencia no sabemos hasta cuando lo tendremos en nuestras manos, por ello, hay que aprovecharlo lo más que podamos en el momento presente.
- En medio del desierto es necesario el oasis. Con esta imagen, quiero referirme a que en medio de las dificultades con que nos enfrentamos en nuestra vida (como la pandemia actual) es necesario fortalecernos, precisamente para poder seguir y no rendirnos ante ellas.
Pues bien, una de las cosas que nos fortalece es poder disfrutar de momentos celebrativos donde nos divertimos de diversas maneras, experimentando así que la vida es más que los obstáculos por las cuáles podemos estar pasando.
Quisiera resaltar esto porque nos podemos dejar llevar del pesimismo y ser masoquista al encerrarnos en nuestros problemas, perdiendo la oportunidad de distraernos en cosas que nos revitalizan.
- Life is today and we know nothing or very little about tomorrow. In the celebration of a birthday this manifests itself in a special way, because the joy of this day is born from the fact that we are happy for the simple fact of existing.
This gift of existence we do not know until when we will have it in our hands, therefore, we must take advantage of it as much as we can in the present moment.
- In the middle of the desert we need the oasis. With this image, I want to refer to the fact that in the midst of the difficulties we face in our lives (such as the current pandemic) it is necessary to strengthen ourselves, precisely to be able to continue and not give up in the face of them.
Well, one of the things that strengthens us is being able to enjoy celebratory moments where we have fun in different ways, thus experiencing that life is more than the obstacles we may be going through.
I would like to emphasize this because we can get carried away by pessimism and be masochistic when we close ourselves up in our problems, losing the opportunity to distract ourselves in things that revitalize us.
- En la unión está la fuerza. Es más fácil vencer a un equipo donde exista división entre sus miembros, así también si las contrariedades de la vida nos encuentran solos, divididos, separados del resto, va a ser fácil para ellas vencernos.
Como seres humanos formamos un solo equipo, por eso, es bueno sentir ese apoyo de los demás en momentos fuertes de la vida. El tener un motivo común de celebración es un lazo fuerte de unión.
Por eso, el poder compartir en el cumpleaños de mi mamá con personas que tenía tiempo sin ver, lo sentí como un apoyo ante el mal común por el cual todos estamos atravesando. Esto se complementa con el siguiente punto:
- No somos los únicos soldados en el campo de batalla. El poder experimentar que no estamos solos en la lucha que estamos emprendiendo hoy es algo que nos mantiene en pie de lucha, pero sobre todo el ver cómo otros a pesar del dolor actual que ocasiona la pandemia siguen disfrutando y celebrando la vida es sumamente motivador.

As human beings we form only one team, so it is good to feel that support from others in strong moments of life. Having a common reason to celebrate is a strong bond.
That is why, being able to share my mother's birthday with people I had not seen in a long time, I felt it as a support in front of the common evil we are all going through. This is complemented by the following point:
- We are not the only soldiers on the battlefield. To be able to experience that we are not alone in the fight we are undertaking today is something that keeps us on our feet, but above all, to see how others, despite the current pain caused by the pandemic, continue to enjoy and celebrate life is extremely motivating.
