12 Days of Christmas: Day 4 – The Morgan Silver Dollar

Day four of my 12 Days of Christmas Precious Metals Wishlist takes us a step higher in value and history. Over the past few days, we’ve climbed from humble junk silver, to generic bullion rounds, and then to the classic North American favourites, the Libertad and the American Silver Eagle. Each step has added a little more character and a little more cost, and today’s pick continues that trend beautifully: the legendary Morgan Silver Dollar.

I’ve always loved these old silver coins, not just for their design but for the history they hold. Struck between 1878 and 1904 (and again in 1921), the Morgan Silver Dollar captures a fascinating chapter in American history. Every coin feels like it could tell a thousand stories — from the hands of miners during the silver boom to the saloons of the Wild West. For us here in the UK, coins from the 1800s don’t feel that old given our deep-rooted history, but in the context of American heritage, the 1880s were the days of cowboys, revolvers, and frontier towns. It’s hard not to find that pretty damn cool.

What I love most about Morgans is their tangible link to a time when silver truly was money. Each one carries 0.7734 troy ounces of silver and, depending on condition and mint mark, can range anywhere from modest collector prices to small fortunes. Even a well-circulated example has an undeniable charm, the worn edges, the softened Liberty portrait, the faint eagle feathers, all marks of a coin that’s seen life.

So, for Day 4, the Morgan Silver Dollar earns its place on my Christmas wishlist. It’s the perfect blend of history, silver content, and character. Whether you collect for the bullion, the beauty, or the nostalgia, there’s nothing quite like holding a piece of the Old West in your hand.

The Morgans I have are not uncirculated quality but I am grateful my Father left them for me. Big beautiful coins from a historical era of the US.

Morgan dollars are sweet. They feel like money when you hold them. Its hard to explain, but even non stackers inherently know if you drop one in their hand.
