Franklin Binary Trigger Action

in Outdoors and more3 years ago

So, I was never too excited about the Binary triggers. That changed a bit today. For those that don't know, a Binary trigger is one that fires a shot when you pull the trigger, and again when you release the trigger. This is still classified as a semi-auto and not full-auto (at least for most states in the U.S), and as such does not require special licensing or permits in those states. So far, about 11 states have banned them.

Two of my son-in-law's were up this weekend and I got to shoot it on his Romanian 7.62x35 AK variant with the Franklin Binary trigger. There are kit's for a variety of weapons. This kit replaces the original trigger group with a 3-position switch. Trigger pull not bad at 4.5 lbs. considering most will want a stronger trigger pull on this type weapon than on benchrest rifles anyway. Position one is "safe" mode and will not fire. Position 2 is single-fire mode and works like a normal trigger. Position 3 fires 1 round on pull, and 1 round on release. Yes, should you change your mind in position 3, you can supposedly switch selector back to position 2 and cancel the round firing on release (not tested). Here's a quick video of it in action with position 3.

I didn't get a video of the owner, he was shooting about twice the rate. Sounded like a slow full-auto when he was shooting it.
Not the most accurate when firing rapid fashion due to the recoil, and not what I'd choose for most of my rifles, but great for a Close Quarter Battle Rifle (CQB), or maybe for a Coyote hunting rig where a quick double tap would be useful. Just flicking the selector switch was pretty cool. I'm thinking maybe one for the AR .223 coyote rig, and would likely be a blast on a .22 rimfire as well.

This rifle had a wooden stock, and was a bit heavy (especially if you add the 50 round drum magazine he had (not pictured). The heaviness actually helped with recoil a bit. The 7.62x39 doesn't really kick back much compared to .223 or others, but the rapid fire does push the muzzle up and off target pretty fast, even with the front pistol grip.

Was definitely fun to shoot, and sometimes that's all that matters. This one made by "Franklin" which seems one of the best choices for such toys.

It's weird seeing the next town over from where I am stamped on the receiver of an AK. A binary trigger on one makes a lot more sense than an AR these days. The ammo is still relatively reasonable. Looks like a lot of fun

I understand it was a bit of a build gun, with "almost" all the part numbers matching. lol. But it was great fun, even if not very practical.

I've only got one word in response to this post.

This would be a lot of fun!

Ok, more than one word. 😃

Yes, that's what I said. Just one magazine... Just a couple double-taps. I won't just blast through the magazine... hehe. Those thoughts didn't last long. Was very cool for us folks that never shot full auto.. (well only once a decade or two ago).

The enjoyment was pretty clear to see...Your face said, bring me some more mags! ☺️

Binary trigger sounds dangerous, if that even works when already talking about a weapon 😝😅

Well, definitely not for newbies! This capability has been available on a variety of arms for decades, but more of a single, triple, or full auto selector switch. These were often limited to military or police ownership only in many countries. This is a way (at least for now) that technically avoids those legalities and extra licensing, tax stamps, or other costs. I would recommend only for trained and experienced shooters. Legal caveat made!

Very Nice, I too have thought about this exact trigger, but anything that makes me expend more ammo at a greater rate, well, I'm too cheap to really wanna go that route 🤣
Still, I do think I want one for CQB possibilities

🤔

Lol, so true. I was determined to only take a few double-tap shots to test the capability and potential real-world use. You saw how long that lasted... I think this will be amazing on a AR .223 platform or a .22 rimfire Ruger 10-22 with the lighter recoil. It's a shame I just replaced both those triggers with nice target triggers in the last few months. I looked at these as an option, but decided on the lighter target triggers. Now I think at least one of them will get the Franklin Armory Binary.

Once you've wasted a mag or five, it's not that difficult to get the discipline back and hoard the ammo! Will certainly go thru a box or three when it's new :)
