[Blog #96] Epic Mountain Bike race next Sunday

Heeeyho Readers! Next Sunday's gonna be awesome!

It's been so long that I don't blog — as in a diary — that I'm unsure of what community to use.

Anyways. I'm excited to share. A lot.

Next Sunday is going to be explosive. A friend and I will participate in an uphill mountain biking race. Technically, it's not the usual mountain biking competition I'm used to — like Olympic Cross Country (XCO) or Short Track (XCC) or Marathon (XCM), with obstacles, mud, rocks, roots, etc. It's on asphalt instead, which doesn't ease the brutality.

The place

A few stats: 15 kilometers, 284 turns, 1400 meters of elevation, 6.4% average gradient, 14.6% maximum gradient.

The Serra do Rio do Rastro is one of the many valleys in the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Highway SC-390 is characterized by steep climbs and hairpin turns. This world-famous road is located btween the town of Lauro Müller and Bom Jardim da Serra.

Serra do Rio do Rastro

So, twice a year the town of Lauro Muller hosts the Serra do Rio do Rastro Hill-climb Challenge. The objective is plain and simple: climb the fucking hell as fast as you can.

The competition is divided in mountain bikes and road bikes; then each category is divided in sub-categories by age. I'm master A1 (30-34 yo). About 1500 athletes participate each year. {Holy shit}

Serra do Rio do Rastro elevation graph

The graph above shows how tough it's gonna be. There's barely no rest. Now... I'm not aiming at a podium since my bicycle isn't particularly lightweight, but I weight 62kg, which helps a lot. Completing without stopping is the real gain.

I've been there before, though the road was closed for cyclists due to repairs. Not gonna lie my itchy-itchy legs begged to cycle down the road. The following year it was the worst Covid wave ever. Finally, the pandemic is over, competitions are back, and I'll finally cycle the famous route.

Wish me luck and I'll bring photos later next week!

Peace.

Glad to know that. It's what motivates me

At least the view is spectacular, the pain comes as default, mhahahah.
Good luck! I am sure you will enjoy it.

hahaha exactly
I'm not sure if I'll have time to enjoy the view though =/ in agony going up; seconds to cycle back down

you can do it! You were born to multitask!

Nonono, I'm a man. Men can do only one thing at a time, and we screw it.

Don't pull the man card on me! 👮‍♀️🚨 We are all equal, didn't you hear the news?! 🧐

Where do you live? Depending on the location there might be worst climbs xDD

thanks for the support!

A yea there are some, some longer than the others but nothing like the one you going to do, gradient is much lower, i might get 15% in some places but thats for 100m maybe....

Thank you!

Good luck! Kick some asses man :) Btw 62 kg? Wow. As far as I remember, you are at least 185 cm tall, are you sure you don´t need to bulk up some muscles into those legs? :D

Yoooo, sry for taking so long. I week without internet. Yup, ideally I should weight 68kg, but I've never reached that even bulking like an animal.

Wow, very special somatotype then... I actually just hit 88kg yesterday for the first time in my life. At my 177 cm, heh, bulking up like an animal :D but have been able to push my gym maxes a bit further thanks to all the new mass :D

So the race is tomorrow, right? Good luck again!

but have been able to push my gym maxes a bit further thanks to all the new mass :D

You are into hypertrophy, right?
I have to find the perfect balance between being lightweight and strong. Most of my gym exercises focus on core strength, stabilization and a lot of legs. Still could gain some more weight =/

So the race is tomorrow, right? Good luck again!

It was last Sunday xDD (finished 10th of 28 in my category) I have another race tomorrow. I'm trying to write about last sunday's race but having zero motivation.

Yeah, been trying to bulk up through lifting and increase my strength and gym maxes along the way. Been into this type of workout for some 2 years, did mostly calisthenics before ;)

A good friend of mine is in a similar situation like you. He is an ultramarathon runner, bony thin. He wants to build some muscles in his legs but doesn´t want any weight gains :D

Congrats on that 10th spot then! Sounds good :) And good luck tomorrow again!

💪 next year I'm aiming for a podium. I'm pretty sure it's doable considering this was my first year and I held back quite a lot not knowing the route.
