What's Buzzing Friends...
A lot of every day items we use get their names from the person or company that invented that item. Case in point the Edison bulb who got its name from Thomas Edison, or the Ford truck that was invented by Henry Ford. These all seem to make a lot of sense in our modern minds, however over time the name of invention overshadows the name of the person who invented it, and then to realize that it's actually a name of a person or place is quite whimsical and absurd to realize. Today we are looking at this and more specifically the sandwich.
A sandwich is generally defined as two pieces of bread with some sort of filling in the middle. From peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to salami sandwiches, and even the Vietnamese Banh Mi, these are all sandwiches. Like every great thing, there was a person who did that thing first and invented it. This is true for the sandwich as well.
It is widely believed that the sandwich originated around the 1700s. At this time there was a Earl of a plot of land in England known as "Sandwich". His name was "John Montagu", and he was the Earl of Sandwich. John had a gambling addiction and did not like to leave the gambling tables to eat food. One day he ordered a meal to be brought to him that he can eat with his hands while gambling. On that day the sandwich was born.
Born to feed a gambling Earl, the sandwich has gone on to revolutionize eating around the world.
