Did you know, that French was the main language of the European Union until the brits entered and funny enough, they left 2 years ago again :D

I kind of view all EU as domestic market. Also Russian is not spoken solely in Russia. I just didnt want to put Mandarin alone and skip that huge piece of land between them and the EU.

Between the late 40s and 70s, all Europeans had to learn french and all meetings and documents had to be french. And then with the fast-rising popularity of the English language and the UK joining EU, they switched to English.

Of course in theory, depending on how good your education and wealth status is, you might still be living in southern Rumania and don't give a damn.
