Why the Smartphone Market Is Slowing Down: A Changing Consumer Mindset

in FreeCompliments5 days ago

You must have noticed a lot these days that the phone market is gradually slowing down. This is evident from all the news reports and all the consumers. In the past, when new phones used to be a hot sale, meaning millions of units were being sold in a single day, it has slowed down considerably these days. The reason for this is simply that people today don't trust technology as much. They don't trust performance as much, and the company is at fault for this. New phones are released every month. The same type of phone is released every month with a new name, which causes a lot of trouble and misunderstandings. There is a lot of confusion about which phone to buy. When a person buys a phone these days, it is so good that we don't have to buy a phone for four to five years.

In earlier times, people did not have that much knowledge of technology and everyone suddenly needed to buy a phone because everyone had to update their life. But in today's time, where everyone is in a stable life, where they know what a phone is and what it can do, then they understand that there is no need to buy a new phone every month or every year. A phone lasts for three to four years and only real needs matter now and this mindset change is a big reason because now we feel that spending a lot is a big thing and spending on a phone is a very useless thing. We use the phone till its last breath, which is the mindset I have seen in many people today.

Earlier phones were not that strong, neither their hardware was good, nor their software, but today the companies have improved so much that people do not need to update them for at least 5 years and this company does the testing because they make so much costly in a phone that no one else needs to buy a new phone and earlier we had to replace the phone in 1.5-2 years because the screen used to break or the battery used to get damaged. Today we do not need it for 3-4 years because the hardware has more durable. It has become better. There is a lot of software, it has been optimized and all the manufacturing updates have become more sustainable. If the phone is running smoothly then why spend unnecessarily?

Earlier, one phone used to provide two years of software updates, but today phones like Samsung and Apple provide 5-6 years of software updates. Meaning, if the phone you bought 6 years ago was running Android 7, then today it is running the latest Android 16c, then why would you need to buy a new phone? It could be that this phone was running slow, but if you get the support of the latest software and latest technology even in a 7-year-old phone, then it would be foolish to spend so much money on a new phone. It is also true that in today's time, the ability of people to stand has been achieved because earlier people did not think about how to be financially stable. How should we invest money, where should we invest. Earlier they did not have financial knowledge, but today people have become very smart, they have all the financial knowledge.

Speaking of myself, I have a four-year-old Samsung phone that runs very smoothly. It's running the latest Android 15, which I consider quite efficient today, and it still takes good photos. The phone is a little different because it got a new update. There are a lot of problems with that phone. A little later, but it can still last for another year. Its screen is broken on one side, but I need a cast. It will cost me ₹1200 to get a new screen installed, and it will be as good as new, and I won't have to replace it for a year or two. This is the mentality that most people have these days because they don't understand why they should buy a new phone. It's better to replace the old phone a little or get it refurbished, and it will be like new. Who would think that in today's times, people would spend ₹30,000 just because the screen is broken? It's better to replace the old phone with something new and make it look like new.

Finally, I would say that the biggest problem in this is the companies which have stopped innovating in today's time. In earlier times, companies used to innovate in new ways. Some would turn their phone's camera on. Some would take a selfie stick and assign it a separate action button. New methods were introduced. Someone used a fingerprint scanner for the first time. First, it came to the back, then to the side, then to the front. So, gradually, innovations began, like auto-zooming cameras. Once the standard ones were in place, there would be video. Then they started with 200-megapixel cameras. companies are reducing these kinds of innovations and are now making portable phones, and this is a particularly good thing. But if you don't innovate, how will you get a great experience? Consumers look for new things. If you don't make one thing, how will you benefit from it? Consumers, too, spend very thoughtfully these days.
