a piece of Quake: Playing the campaign in cooperative for the first time online...old school style! [ENG/ESP]

While I was supposed to have recorded the demo file of this game on video, it seems that for some reason only the first map we played was recorded correctly...so the rest of the video that I spent a whole day uploading since it weighed 3GB only had that first map recorded, for some reason skipped everything that came after, and left me with the rest being a constant replay of the demos that come with the game itself.

...So if you're wondering why the pictures look the same level, it's because they are. But take my word for it that this really was crazy during the campaign and a half I played online.

On the same Discord server where I had played Counter-Strike 1.5 the other day, before that I also played Quake classic online with them...in the most "classic" and ancient way possible. We used the version of Quake not optimized for online (instead of QuakeWorld) and connected via a 2000's program to connect between other players called Kali. While it was really something novel and cool to try (as well as a necessity for several players who were literally playing on 90s computers, since that was the theme of the server), the gameplay had a lot of lag, as I had a ping of around 200-300...and since we were playing the original Quake instead of QuakeWorld, all my moves from shooting to moving took about half a second to come out after pressing the keys.

image.png

However, I still entertained myself with this by turning my brain off, trying to time my movements with the lag to get through the levels, shooting everything I see without stopping (unless it's a buddy; there were like 5 of them and sometimes it was hard not to hit someone in the face with a rocket by accident) and just enjoying the chaos of seeing for the first time so many people in Quake's campaign, all fighting for their lives against countless monsters with explosive weapons.

While I would have enjoyed this much more with a more updated and optimized engine for online (or at least QuakeWorld), this was still an interesting experience launching rockets everywhere and dealing with the game's levels; managing to complete the first episode of the campaign, and me deciding to go to sleep in the middle of the second campaign because of how late they were playing. And although the pictures don't do justice to the chaos that happened here (plus for some reason the recording I tried to make of the game didn't work), another player who was there recorded the games from his point of view, so you can see the chaos for yourselves...and the red character running around fighting for his life; that was me 🤠

Sort:

Not old school enough for me.

Needs a Pentium MMX or AMD K-7 with 16mbs of RAM at 320x240 😎

Just kidding, boomer shooters are always a great time

This game literally looks like an antique. It's strange to see that there are still some communities playing it together though. In ancient ways. Still, the point of the game is to have fun, and as long as you do, that's fine.
