Mortal Kombat is a video game saga created by Midway, this saga has become one of the most influential of the fighting genre, not only that, it has also risen to become a cultural icon that has managed to cross the generational bar, becoming in one of the most acclaimed sagas for both children and adults.
Not everything is good, since this saga like any other has had its ups and downs in the world of video games and for many people on its fanbase. In a desperate attempt by Midway and the DC Universe to save themselves from bankruptcy, a crossover between the Mortal Kombat and DC characters came about, a somewhat bizarre combination that resulted in one of the worst games remembered within the Mortal Kombat universe. Is it as bad a game as we remember?
As I said before, Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe is a crossover that allow us to play with the most representative characters from DC and Mortal Kombat. While I think they did a good job in the roster of the DC characters, on the other hand, I think the roster from the Mortal Kombat series is somehow lame.
It´s true we can play as representative characters of the franchise, such as Scorpion or even Sub Zero, but there are some characters like Baraka or Kano that I think they shouldn´t be there when there are always better options like Jhonny Cage or Kung Lao. As a side note, Kung Lao wasn´t added to the final roster, because Warner Bros said he was way too violent.
Probably, that´s one of the biggest flaws of the game itself, what is a Mortal Kombat game without the brutality and gore it represents the franchise? In instance, Warner Bros wanted this game to be more casualized, so the gore we know from the Mortal Kombat series is gone, of course there´s blood and all but once you play the game, you can feel like something is missing, and this is a problem that affects Fatalities too, since they are way too simple, compared with the Fatalities from the other past games.
All characters except Darkseid and Shao Kahn have finishing moves. The Mortal Kombat characters and the DC villains have 2 Fatalities each, while the DC heroes have 2 Heroic Brutalities. These finishing moves are only available in Arcade mode and Versus mode.
Intertwined with the fights there are new gameplay mechanics featuring totally different game dynamics to the usual fight. These modes include Free-Fall Kombat which is activated automatically after throwing the opponent to a lower level in the arena; the player can fight in the air during the fall building up a Super bar, when a player's Super bar fills, they can activate a powerful character specific move which slams the opponent into the ground for big damage, ultimately ending the sequence.
This game has a story mode too when we are given the option to choose the Mortal Kombat or DC side, which is divided between chapters. Many people disliked the story for having boring characters as Kano or Baraka that barely said anything on the whole story. One thing that didn´t help at all to this game was the Spañish locazition which made everything worse, seems players said they couldn´t take the story seriously.
As I said before Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe is not exactly a fondly remembered game, it has a lot of flaws and today's fans say it only served as the foundation for better installments like Injustice or the following Mortal Kombat. Personally, I think it is an entertaining game and it becomes fun if you play it with friends, but that's it, even so, I recommend playing it so you can form your own opinion about it, please keep in mind everthing said here is my personal opinion, if you think this is really great game, that´s good and is an opinion that should be respected by others.
