The "Sentinels of Light" event may have been one of Riot Games' most successful and well-made events in their long history reigning for over a decade. The entire event played out within the client which was never seen before.
I event came with its own "journal of missions", each mission carrying its own interactive storyline and notes being kept in the "journal", all with dates and notes. This sort of thing was never before seen in the game.
I was very excited to play out the event. I am a huge fan, just like many LOL players, of Viego. The Ruined King, AKA Viego, was one of the most anticipated and fanned-over characters from the League of Legends lore. You wouldn't believe how enthusiastic I was when I first learned that there was an entire storyline of Viego, along with an event, coming to the game from the lore of League of Legends.
At the end of the event, when you complete all the missions of the event at the end of this event, you are redirected to an exclusive and unlisted "secret ending" to the mission, a youtube video teasing the finale of the event that was released just yesterday. There is no other way to reach this ending unless you either complete the event or cheat by asking your friend for the link.
The event starts with just Lucian leading the entire thing. I believe Senna comes next. Unlike the original lore, where Yorick is the nemesis of Viego, in the new storyline which is created for the game, Senna and Lucian along with a few new characters have sworn against the Runied King.
Each mission, when unlocked, is designed as an interactive story game. There are dialogue paths you can choose from and the story progresses like that. Of course, no matter what dialogue path you choose, the end is the same. That is why I decided to skip them all.
As each mission gets completed, you gain points. When you have enough points you can unlock a new character which then shows up in the "Headquarters" around the table. Each character brings with them a mission. Clicking on the champion reveals their solo picture in a Sentinels skin, including a short bio and the ledger of the mission.
Here is Sentinels Graves. The bio very accurately reflects Graves's attitude, cunningness, and indifference. It is very uncanny to the Graves from the original lore. The ledger shows the mission that came along with Graves. It is an Epic Monster killing mission, with the highest points being 36 for 4 Epic Monsters.
The event spanned out on a "World Map" very accurate to the original lore. Each mission is correspondent to the map. Just as you unlock characters of the event, you also have to decide which land do you unlock next. Every land has its own champion that joins the event and saves their land by completing the mission.
The final location is Shadow Isles. The land reigned over by the Ruined King, Viego. Once that mission is completed, you will be redirected to the "secret ending" in the form of the finale teaser.
The event highlighted a range of new skins and chromas for Irelia, Olaf, Pyke, Rengar, Riven, Vayne, Graves, Diana, and Thresh. A new line of chromas were also rolled out for Shyvana, Pantheon, Miss Fortune, Karma, Draven and Pantheion. Not to mention the corresponding line of emotes and ward skins from the Ruined line and Sentinels line.
You can unlock the League Sentinels Pass. This pass comes with 4 Ruined Orbs, 200 Sentinel tokens, and the possibility to obtain bigger rewards. All for 1650 RP, riot's in-game currency.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Sentinels event, especially since it came along with the release of Akshan, the latest champion in League of Legends, and the limited game-mode Ultimate Spellbook. It was really cool that the missions were not limited to the champions they came along with. Although I really tried completing the missions with the very champion they came with.
Viego, the biggest hype of League of Legends, bringing a whole line of cinematics, skins, a new lore, and an event. I couldn't ask for more! It is a little disheartening that the original lore was struck off. But it still feels very promising. I am sincerely hoping that Riot performs just as excellently to bring next-level events to the League of Legends.
