Today I want to talk about one of the most criticized Assassin's Creed games, and that is Unity.
I understand that the game was pretty broken at launch, some might say it was unplayable, but this is no longer the case as most of the bugs were fixed along the way, some slipped away and you can still be a little annoyed by them but, overall, the game is in a pretty good shape right now, so you can play and enjoy the story.
The reconstruction of the old Paris is one of my favourite things in this game, the game don't just throw some buildings here and there just so you can climb around, most of them playing an important part in the story or side quests.
During map synchronization is the best time to admire the architecture, the environment takes a certain shape, and then you realize you're nothing more than a little point in a massive city.
Some bugs shown up during my gameplay, the reset of the animation when you're approaching an NPC is the most common, but after less than an hour of gameplay you will start to ignore it. This is a thing I can forgive considering the impressive number of NPC's that the game is putting in scenes, the crowd is reacting to your actions still considering each other positions and the environment at the same time making them react more naturally.
Besides their numbers, the NPC's aren't just walking as in the previous games from this series, their actions are more complex and the game is still optimized very good. From my point of view this game was doing better in 2014 than what Fifa is doing now with the stadium's NPC.
Some bugs along the way
Even through the game was repaired there are still some bugs that you can encounter, here are some that I could find:
A character without animation, simply the face wasn't loaded, but it didn't bothered me.
Here I was blocked in a falling animation, a broken collision, simply to [pass by just by fast travel to another location.
Enemy's collisions with environment, gotta say these are the funniest.
Overall Atmosphere
Something challenging in game development, especially in open world, is to differentiate the environment between different parts of your world, the poor and rich districts of the city needs feel and look different from NPC's and environment perspective to induce the player a certain felling about it's current location. In my opinion this game achieve this, the rich districts are showing the fancy French aristocracy at the end of the 18th century, meanwhile the poor districts contrasts the difference showing the miserable life that some had to live.
Gameplay
This game reminds you that you're only one person, rather than it's predecessors in which you could go in an open fight 1 vs 15, in this one 1 vs 4 and you may already be overwhelmed. The enemy's can take you by surprise, engaging you with some of your tactics like smoke bomb and such. A sniper could easily kill you with one or two shots if you're out of medicine.
For the game to not be so serious here's a corpse eaten by cats in closed building, this seems like a crime was in place where the killer leaved locking the door behind, an image that you can only find if you explore the game and pick every lock to collect everything, not just playing the main story.
Old games outfits
Even through the customization is better than in any previous games, you can always use the outfits from other assassins. The most confusing part about this screen is that you can access it from pause menu, and also from your building, which may be an unfinished feature from what I can think of.
Final impression
From my point of view Assassin's Creed series is more about the story than the gameplay, the overall atmosphere is combining the history with the game in a such way that history lessons never bore you, even through the assassins story is just fiction, the environment looks real, you get to relive the history in a way. The 18th century in France was one full of changes that droved the country in a new direction, your role in this story feels important, even through your character is young and still learning, you're part of it.
Just because the game was a little rushed into production, it doesn't mean it's a bad one, after all it's one of the last of the series where you feel like you're playing Assassin's Creed and not God of War (Odyssey and Valhalla); but that's another story.

Assassin's Creed is a very good gaming franchise.
Nice review.
Thanks! I really enjoyed most of the games in this franchise, however I am a little bit annoyed that in the last 2 games you're more of a mercenary than an Assassin.
Don't you diss Assassin's Creed Origins. Say what you want about Odyssey though, that one is literally "Hey mercenary, do this job for me"
Why don't just remove "Assassin's Creed" from the name if they wanna make a new game after all?
I think it's a conspiracy made to annoy me as they already did with Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia.
On a more serious note, the Assassin's Creed name brings with it pretty big sales.

I love assassins creed. My favourite by far was black flag. It was really novel. I did not like syndicate. I thought all the environments looked the same. I havent had an opportunity to play the last two. I hear mixed things.
My favourite until now is Brotherhood, I didn't get to play Black Flag but I think will be the next on my list.
As for Odyssey, you're more a mercenary than an assassin, and from what I've seen in trailers, Valhalla will follow the same road.
Black flag feels different enough to make it feel like you're almost not playing AC. But its fantastic. Its tropical beaches, jungles pirate ship battles, and free diving in underwater ship wrecks. The plot holds together and follows AC lore and all the mechanics are the sane. But it stands out from the rest as a refreshing divergence.
Looking forward to try it.😃
