I was Watching some news recently, I remember a few years ago when a completely new console came out, we were already talking about the next generation, or at least the games that would be released in this generation. I don't know about you, but this time around, things are a bit emptier than usual. I haven't seen any exclusives, new consoles, or even rumors. Then I saw the awful truth...
I know it sounds exaggerated to say that consoles are dying, but let's be honest: something is changing, and not necessarily so we keep buying little plastic boxes with fans. Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo are playing a different game, and although no one is saying it directly, they are all slowly pushing towards a future without consoles.
Let's start with Microsoft, which is practically halfway to abandoning the idea of "one console per generation." Game Pass is the best example: it no longer matters if you have an Xbox, a PC, or even a toaster with a web browser; as long as you pay the subscription, you can play.
In Redmond, they've been trying for a while to make you forget about the hardware, to have everything run in the cloud, and for the service to be the most important thing. The business is no longer about selling you a new console every five years, but about having you pay month after month, like a Netflix for gamers. I can't blame them, with all the hype surrounding graphics cards, Nvidia, AI, and how important it will be in the future.
I think Microsoft is trying to bury Xbox as quickly as possible to move towards a subscription model that I feel will attract many more people in the coming years.
Meanwhile, Sony is still clinging to the classic model of selling you an extremely expensive console and equally expensive games, but even they've started to loosen the reins. With the PC releases of titles that were previously exclusive, like Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us, they're paving a path that seemed unthinkable a few years ago.
I feel that it's partly due to how expensive it is to make a video game, and even more so to make one that sells well, because the numbers for their latest exclusives haven't been that high. Long gone are the days when they'd release an Uncharted game and have already won the generation.
Because in the end, the numbers rule, and Sony already knows that the money isn't just in selling hardware, but in expanding its ecosystem and milking its franchises everywhere. At this rate, the next God of War will be released even on scientific calculators, and I can't help but smile. In the end, we gamers win with these decisions.
It's true that they're a bit further from Microsoft's model, but just give them a couple more years. They're starting down the same path as Microsoft: exclusives first, then everything else.
And then there's Nintendo, the most independent of the group. They live in their own parallel universe, with consoles that don't compete in power or specs, but still sell like hotcakes. However, it's hard to believe they'll continue down this path. They certainly can, but sooner or later the market will catch up with them.
I say this because of how expensive video games usually are, especially Nintendo games. I don't have any data to prove that their consoles will fail because it's hard not to agree with Mario Bros., but I do believe we'll see profound changes in the coming years with this new video game crisis.

Estuve viendo algunas noticias recientemente, recuerdo hace algunos años cuando salia alguna consola completamente nueva ya estabamos hablando de la siguiente generacion o al menos de los videojuegos que vendrian en esta generacion, no se ustedes, pero esta vez estamos un poco mas vacios de lo que acostumbraba, no he visto exclusivos, ni nuevas consolas o siquiera rumores, despues vi la horrible verdad..
Sé que suena exagerado decir que las consolas están muriendo, pero seamos honestos: algo está cambiando, y no precisamente para que sigamos comprando cajitas de plástico con ventiladores. Xbox, PlayStation y Nintendo están jugando otro juego, y aunque nadie lo diga directamente, todos están empujando poco a poco hacia un futuro sin consolas.
Empecemos con Microsoft, que prácticamente ya está a medio paso de abandonar la idea de “una consola por generación”. El Game Pass es el mejor ejemplo: ya no importa si tienes una Xbox, una PC o un tostador con navegador, mientras pagues la suscripción puedes jugar.
En Redmond llevan rato queriendo que te olvides del hardware, que todo corra en la nube y que lo importante sea el servicio. El negocio ya no está en venderte una caja nueva cada 5 años, sino en tenerte pagando mes a mes, tipo Netflix gamer. No los puedo culpar, con todo el boom de las graficas, de Nvidia, de la AI y lo importante que será en el futuro
Creo que en Microsoft estan queriendo enterrar a Xbox lo mas rapido posible, para ir a ese modelo de suscripcion que siento que va a atraer a mucha mas gente en los años venideros
Por su parte, Sony todavía se aferra al modelo clásico de venderte una consola carisima y unos juegos igual de caros, pero incluso ellos ya empezaron a soltar la cuerda. Con los lanzamientos en PC de títulos que antes eran exclusivos, como Horizon Zero Dawn o The Last of Us, están abriendo un camino que hace unos años parecía impensable.
Siento que en parte se trata tambien de lo CARO que es hacer un videojuego, y mas aun que venda bien, porque los numeros de sus ultimos exclusivos no han estado tan altos, lejos han quedado los dias en donde sacaban algun Uncharted y ya tenian la generacion ganada
Porque al final, los números mandan, y Sony ya sabe que el dinero no está solo en vender hardware, sino en expandir su ecosistema y exprimir sus franquicias en todos lados. A este paso, el próximo God of War va a salir hasta en calculadora científica y no puedo evitar sonrier, al final los jugadores ganamos con estas decisiones
Es verdad que ellos estan un poco mas lejos de ese modelo de Microsoft pero tan solo denle un par de años mas, estan empezando por el mismo camino de Microsoft, primero los exclusivos luego todo lo demas
Y luego está Nintendo, la más “a su bola” del grupo. Ellos viven en su universo paralelo, con consolas que no compiten en potencia ni en specs, pero que igual venden como pan caliente. Sin embargo, cuesta creer que van a seguir por este camino.. Perfectamente pueden pero tarde o temprano el mercado los va a alcanzar
Lo digo por lo caros que los videojuegos suelen estar, en especial los de nintendo, no tengo ningun dato para probar que sus consolas iran a pique porque es dificil no darle la razon a Mario Bros, pero de que vamos a ver unos cambios profundos en los proximos años con esta nueva crisis del videojuego si creo que los vamos a ver
