Journey To Fossil Island.jpg

As it would turn out I'd need quite a lot of Kudos to unlock one of my more short-term goals of going to Fossil Island. Which requires 100 Kudos. This is one of those kinds of goals I did not work on all at once. Every month I'd do maybe something here or there. Usually not amounting to much.

Acquiring Kudos Early Game

Early on.jpg

While I've been to the Varrock Museum a couple of times I never put much thought into the place until more recently In the past I've earned a couple of Kudos by collecting relics in Ruins Of Camdozaal. That was however quite a few months back and only a couple of points. I however started that was such a small amount.

Another way of earning Kudos is by doing certain quests. As they would allow information to be updated about certain displays at the Varrock Museum. Such quests included among many others Demon Slayer, Priest in Peril, and A Tail of Two Cats. With a total of 15 quests. You then just simply needed to talk with Historian Minas to earn some extra Kudos.

Many of the fifteen quests I've done in some form or another along the way. These were never quests I went out of my way just to do for Kudos. I would sometimes after finishing a few quests head over to Historian Minas and see if I had any unclaimed Kudos to collect.

Another decent chunk of Kudos I ended up earning was from doing the Natural History Quiz. Down in the Varrock Museum basement, there are a bunch of display cases. When you interact with each one, they have questions for you to answer. This led to me getting another 28 Kudos.

After many quests, the Quiz, and some other random turns I was getting close to my goal of 100 Kudos. That was however just one of the requirements to get to Fossil Island.

The Dig Site Quiz

talking to the examiner.jpg

Another competent was finishing the quest Dig Site. To be invited to an expedition that was going to Fossil Island you had to be qualified to handle the relics and fossils that would find there.

My first attempt at the test was an utter failure. As it turns out it was a trick quiz and no matter what I had answered it. I would have failed it anyway. I was just not expecting to score a zero.

Next up I was sent out to talk to a bunch of different students to get helpful tips and tricks from them. Many of them had me complete odd jobs around the dig site they were working on.

There ended up being several tiers of the exam I had to pass. Each time I had to go back asking different students for their help. It however paid off in the end as I ended up getting the certificates I needed by passing the exams.

Things did get a little interesting along the way when I was tasked with getting different ingredients that created nitroglycerin. Highly explosive stuff that I was able to create from a wide variety of ingredients around and even under the big dig site they had going. It’s a shame this cave was not any bigger. I’d have loved exploring it and the other room I was in during my little acquiring of ingredients spree.

At the time I had no idea I was creating nitroglycerin. Needless to say, when I showed it to a teacher, they were quite alarmed as I ended up being once they told me what it was.

The things I was asked to do along the way to finishing this part of the requirements to get to Fossil Island were a bit silly. I at least now had this part out of the way. I was however still short on the 100 kudos requirement.

Cleaning Fossils At The Museum

One benefit of finishing The Dig Site and one I would not learn of for a while is I ended up unlocking a section of Varrock Museum that would allow me to earn some quick Kudos. I only discovered it on ascent one day when I took the wrong door to get into the museum.

In the past when I used that door, I was told I did not meet the requirements to use it. I would then have to use the main door to get into the museum. This time around I was allowed into a roped-off section. Where I learned, I could help clean up some fossils and get further Kudos.

A rather nice thing was you could walk up to a tool rack and pick up all the required items needed to clean the fossils. This included leather boots and gloves. Along with a brunch and many other things.

I then would fill up the couple of open inventory slots I had with what looked like rocks. Then start to brush away the debris on the specimen table. Most times I'd find things like arrowheads and other junk if nothing at all.

Every once in a while, I would find one of the five items being looked for. Such items as pottery, coins, and symbols. Each of the five finds would reward me with ten Kudos each.

Making putting up quiz nonsense to even be permitted into this section is well worth it. These fifty total Kudos I would earn in a rather short amount of time ended up putting me over the 100 Kudos I needed to move forward on getting to Fossil Island.

Bone Voyage

bone voyage.jpg

After many months of randomly getting Kudos and discovering different ways of getting to the 100 I needed. Along with passing the quizzes and having the certifications required. I would now go on the voyage to Fossil Island.

There was just one massive issue. The museum had yet to have a successful trip to the island. At first, I thought maybe they had a failed trip or two. No. They had what sounded like over a dozen failed trips with many of the boats attempting to get to the island never being seen again.

My enthusiasm for getting to the island was starting to get a bit dampened. The further along the stories went about their failures to get to the island. I was even starting to feel I would never be getting there myself.

at the mill.jpg

It seemed however they think could resolve some of the issues. The biggest one was the ship kept sinking. So, I was tasked with acquiring the right kind of lumber. The local lumber mill however does not have that kind of logs. I ended up having to bring contact to Hosidius and having them ship the logs needed to the mill to process them.

That was not the only thing I was tasked with. I also went out and got a potion and a lucky charm. Both ended up being quite unlucky indeed. I however did acquire them both.

The lucky charm I have a feeling like the lead navigator did that it was worthless. To make things even worse, however, was the potion I had acquired. It made everyone fall asleep on the ship.

I was then left alone to sail the thing to the island. I had to play a bit of a mini-game of raising or lowering the sails and moving the rudder in different directions to keep the boat on course.

Naturally, I was quite tired at the time and not paying the best of attention. I almost failed the mini-game three times on my first attempt. I would not be shocked if I was just circling the island like a moron. Even at one point, the bar looked like it was at 100% to the island and then it went down to 99%. Down to 50%. I was so close yet so far away.

Final thoughts

Fossile Island.jpg

In the end, I made it to the island. I was so thrilled at the time. I somewhat recall my first time looking at some relics in Camdozaal and collecting my first Kudos. I had no idea it would be such a long wait before I'd make to it Fossil Island.

Once I got to the island, I realized things needed to be repaired. There were also many tasks to perform. Just one large issue. Like most things in OSRS. You realize you either lack the skill level or the items to go out and do what you want. It seems it will be a while before I can start working on the many tasks on the island itself.

I still remember watching a friend play this game when I visited him. Seeing your post reminds me a lot of him.

I miss the good old days of playing games or watching games with a friend in person.

Since I didn't have a pc I would go to his house and watch him play and one of those games was this one. I liked your post my friend
