Leapster2 - One of the least sold handheld consoles

in Hive Gaming3 years ago (edited)

There are companies within the video game industry that simply develop titles for the entertainment of gamers, these games are usually the most famous among players, for its high demand on download servers like steam or other platforms, however, there are games or consoles that have a different objective, to educate the smallest of the home. If we review the history we can find different systems that fulfill this purpose, but this time we will remember a fallen soldier, which is considered one of the worst selling portable consoles in history, it is the Leapster2.

LeapFrog was the company in charge of the development of this portable console, announced in 2008 as the successor of the Leapster, being exactly the same hardware, but they added a USB port, which allowed some interaction with the computer. In addition, they added a slot with an SD port, which was used to run downloaded games, as well as for file sharing.

As mentioned at the beginning, the Leapster2 was a system oriented to children and young people, with several games of the educational genre. It received a lot of support from various developers, because it was compatible with the first model that was launched in 2003, having a catalog of 60 games, among which the best-selling was a well-known character, SpongeBob SquarePants Saves the Day, but we can find other animated characters such as Ratatouille, Scooby-Doo or Spider-Man.

One of the things that most attracted the attention of the Leapster2 was its touch screen, allowing an excellent interaction with the user, besides having the facility to take actions within the games in a simple way. At the moment the Leapster2 seems to be a very good console with a very easy to reach target audience, so why did it fail?

The first Leapster was a portable console very well received by most parents and representatives, this resulted in the sale of 500,000 units, a not inconsiderable figure, however, this fame completely collapsed the Leapster2, because it offered nothing good and were the same games of its predecessor, this caused that different distributors preferred to continue selling the first version and completely ignore the sequel.

Due to this, the Leapster2 only sold 500 units, an extremely low figure, this event motivated the company to cancel the production of the console, remaining as one of the biggest failures of video games. To be able to get a Leapster2 nowadays is something almost impossible, for this reason its prices are really expensive, since it is an article with few existing units.

The Leapster2 was simply an update of its predecessor, but this was the main problem that led to its failure, perhaps if another console had been developed with different hardware, but with the same target audience, the story would be different, but the past cannot be changed, being buried as one of the worst failures.
