A difficult game can be two alternatives depending on the person, some simply skip it and go to something easier and others choose to face the challenge because difficulty can mean greater appeal, at least I consider myself to be in the second option.

At the end of the day, many of us like to test ourselves as players to see if we have the skills, and if at least one style of game makes us develop this characteristic (or at least try to) it is the roguelike. Some time ago I met one thanks to the world of youtube that caught my attention for several factors, its aesthetics, a story similar to Indiana Jones, its difficulty, and of course, its curious name, the game I'm talking about is Spelunky.

After years without playing it I tried to try it again to see if I still had the skills or was rusty (spoiler: the answer is the second) but I had the idea to make the playing of the game for those players who have not tried it or do not even know about it can know a little of what it is and encourage them to try it, because at the time in my case if it was not for youtube I did not pass even the first level, a bit like now but from something more noob.

So , let's go to the gameplay !

Spelunky puts us at the feet of an Indiana Jones-style adventurer who must go through levels with traps and monsters (all worthy of an adventurer in ruins) that little by little the more you advance in level, the more complicated everything gets. This is what adds the touch of difficulty because in case you die the game automatically restarts, you lose progress and start in a new generated world. So if dexterity is not your forte you will most likely lose patience with it.

At first, when I entered after a long time it was something semi-new to me because if I remembered several things but obviously over time they were gone from my memory. Now playing it I have been remembering after a while trying it (and many deaths) and I could grab the thread of everything, it is definitely something dangerous and you always have to keep an eye on everything that happens because dying is something that is lurking. If there is a rule or main feature is that Everything can kill you and it is so, even in the tutorial it happened to me that I was calmly jumping and learning the controls and suddenly Bam! I broke a vase inside that had a spider in it and bye-bye, restart. That's why it's something that we must take into account and be careful when moving.

A damsel in distress

Our character will have several abilities and skills that will allow you to travel more widely as jumping, climbing, parkour, throw the rope to high places, and the famous whip with which we will kill monsters with one or two bumps, you can also collect objects and throw them to enemies or traps to use them as a decoy (taking advantage of the bug).

In each level you will find a dungeon full of objects that you will have full capacity to find or not, the two most prized are the golden totem and the damsel in distress (infallible objects in a mine in ruins for every adventurer). If you want to play the game properly you can't ignore them, it's not a crime in the game, but for an adventurer, if you leave the mine without a totem or a damsel in distress, or even worse without both, it's like not having gone directly. I at least always try to rescue both, as these collectibles in each level help you get more money that allows you to buy items in the store.

An important factor is how far the damage endurance level of our character goes, it happened to me that having a pretty nice and entertaining visual theme I did not think that logic (and gravity above all) were a factor that influenced the mechanics, so I jumped off a cliff and oh, surprise, it turns out that the character is latent to damage, congrats Gabriel for not remembering that he is an adventurer and not a superhero who resists free falls, well done. So this factor is something to keep in mind since in addition to falls our character is vulnerable to chain damage from bombs and suffers from spikes only if we fall on him but if we go over the side nothing happens.

This was certainly something I could have done with knowing at the beginning, I remember 99% of the deaths in my games were thanks to not knowing that a fall off a cliff to the ground, a bomb dropped without remembering the damage it did, going down the rope and a trap throwing arrows at me, everything is dangerous and if you're not careful you'll lose your patience if you were ahead.

Undoubtedly one of the things I like most about Spelunky is its visuals, it's quite nice and its characters, monsters, modeling, caves, objects, everything. Nobody could have made a roguelike that imitated Indiana Jones better and gives it that characteristic touch of an animated game that does not touch that childish point nor so little so mature and to be able to do in reality what was best, to exploit good gameplay accompanied by a good visual section.

Of course, those of us who knew about Spelunky at the time went through a time when roguelike games were quite fashionable, at that time perhaps the priority was not that the visuals outweigh the gameplay and cause us an exaltation in the eyes. Games like Shovel Knight, Super meat boy, FEZ, were good games that will be remembered in the community for a long time and will continue to be played for several more years.

Spelunky is a tremendous game, maybe my favorite roguelike and I can be sure it will give you great moments, those randomness factors, visuals, and objectives that make everything difficult is what make it worth it. As of today, it has version two that I honestly have not tried but this one I can attest that it is a game that I recommend if you have not tried it. I hope this post about Spelunky will encourage you to try it for the first time, if you read this far thank you very much, and see you in the next one.

Spelunky looks like a lot of retro rogue-like fun! The initial simplicity and progressively more difficult gameplay appeals to me. Thanks for introducing it to me, I look forward to trying it!

Thanks to you for stopping by, it's a very good game that every time you die you feel like playing another one and that's how you spend the whole day

I’ve heard great things about this one and I do have a sweet spot for rogue likes. Dead Cells and Hades are definitely my favorites. This plays in a different style than those but it has quite a cool and charming aesthetic. Will have to check it out some day. Glad you’re enjoying it!

My man, Dead Cells is brutal too, I didn't play it as many hours like this one but it was a very good experience, Hades I haven't played it, I'm going to look for it and try it. Spelunky is what you say, it's cool and quite nice except for when you die, check it out and see how it goes, for sure you'll like it. Thanks to you for stopping by @pusen!

It looks pretty good, it's a good roguelike in my opinion, maybe one of these days I'll try it and tell you how it is, I love this kind of simple games but with brutal gameplay.

I'm also a fan of this kind of game, plus its aesthetics is quite nice. Try it and see how it goes, but don't despair and be careful because many things usually are traps. Cheers mate, thank you for stopping by @gabotask
