The story of Doom 3 follows in the footsteps of the original game, and you play as a marine who was sent to Mars to replace the current military crew in an alien laboratory. It's not all right when you get here, though, because you're haunted by rumors and bizarre jolts from some of the staff about paranoia and the desperate desire to get out of it as soon as possible. It appears like the UAC has found some extraterrestrial intelligence and is messing around with the concept of warp gates. Owing to lack of treatment, a warp gate is opened to Hell itself, and soon the plot takes a terrifying turn when you are left alone to struggle for life against some of the nastiest and most threatening denizens that Oblivion will hurl in your path. There are survivors that will keep you in touch throughout the game, but you're left to fend for yourself as a whole.

In classic ID form, Doom 3 has some great gameplay filled with running and shooting action. While there is stuff to figure out, and the realms have a dark, claustrophobic, labyrinth-like feel that makes you worry about becoming lost at times, much of the puzzle element in the game revolves about "get from A to B" or "find so and so." And, of course, you're going to find access key cards that will help you to enter higher security sections of the house. Control-wise, Doom 3 is still in "easy to figure out" mode with W, A, S, and D tracking primary movement, a scroll wheel to quickly switch weapons, and a reload key, one to crouch, and one to jump only to name a few.

Let's chat for a second about the monsters and weapons you're going to face while playing because I was worried about having to reinvent a classic for one (being a Doom fan back in the nineties). Luckily, all the artillery that made the original incredible came back, including shotguns, plasma arms, grenade launchers, and the BFG 9000. There's also a cool new weapon called the Soulcube, which can automatically kill the enemy and provide health. As for the Hell beasts, I was glad to see some of my old favorites like Imp, Cacodemon, and Pinky Demon back again, except this time they've undergone a big graphics overhaul that will not only leave you fascinated with the new gestures and appearances but also by the fact that they're scary as heck now.

A cool new feature that has been added to this newest fun-packed escape from Hell is a PDA that your player will take along with him. This is handy if you forget about your current task target, but it is also useful for playing video clips that you learn, as well as audio transmissions from some of the crew onboard the facility that not only gives you more insight from a personal point of view on what's going on in the UAC complex but will also reveal useful objects like combination lockers where you will locate stuff like arm lockers.

Graphics are the one thing that really helped us here in the gameplay arena. The game looks pretty good in my opinion, and this new engine they're using was pumping out graphics and looking fluid enough to scare the hell out of me when I came across Imp, Zombie, or one of the many other monsters they're going to have to combat along the way. The creatures in this game are not only disgusting as hell, but they're not stupid either. Monsters with remote weapons will take shelter to avoid the flames, and many will only disappear in the dark corners and wait for you to pay attention to everything in front of you before attacking from behind. Yeah, you're being pushed to play smarter. It's a terrific idea that keeps you careful and impatient to get closer to a spot, sure, there's a lot of occasions when you might need to stop so that you can go and change your undies or catch your breath before you get a heart attack. I accidentally knocked my PC over once accidentally when I jumped at a corpse that dropped out of the roof in front of me right after all the power in the facility went out.

One role that I have to say might have used a bit of work directly was in the Multiplayer Department. Before I do a lot more, please accept that I didn't like the multiplayer experience; I just thought it was going to be a little bit more. Basically, every server I signed in was a deathmatch or last man standing game that we've all seen and played a hundred times before, and while it was fun to play with the latest Doom 3 engine with improved lighting and effects technologies, this was a good chance to finally get it all out and deliver some interesting play modes, one of which would have been a co-op mode.

The gameplay atmosphere, both in sound and lighting, in Doom 3 was nothing short of incredible. The game overall is really, very dim, and like I said or suggested before, you've prepared a couple of times with a simple flashlight trying to illuminate the dark corners of the room before entering to try to make sure you don't jump. The sounds of Doom 3 set an incredibly disturbing tone to the game from start to finish, and you'll be distracted by everything from the static chatter on your headset to the sounds of your friends screaming for help or crashing to the background noises that would put your hair on the verge of trying to work out whether it was human or much, much worse.

Overall, Doom 3 is a game that any Doom fan can go and catch, and don't worry, I've been able to run it without any problems or lags, even with my new computer specs. Well, id Software has proved that it was the founder of the single-player FPS industry as we know it again, and while many of the elements here are things we've seen and done through the years, atmosphere, lighting, animation, storyline, and sound are sure to bring the bar back to the world of FPS gaming.

Thank you for reading and all the best!
