Chess Universe: un ajedrez diferente [ESP/ENG] Chess Universe: a different kind of chess

I have played many chess games that in particular I found super exciting, those that make your heart race, as if you wanted to scream for a goal that doesn't come in a football match, and make you break out in a cold sweat, but, for better or worse, the fact is that there is a group of people who consider chess boring and lacking in excitement; then came Chess Universe, which took this into account and gave another meaning to chess.

Before I continue, I'll stop to comment on the origin of the game: Chess Universe was born at the end of 2019 from the hand of an (indie) company called King of Games of which, unfortunately, there is not much information. It is available via iOS and Android and has a community of players that has grown exponentially in recent months, reaching over 100000 downloads on Google Play with a four and a half star rating. Good numbers for this rising star.

A chess... colourful

Nothing is too much for Chess Universe, I really think it combines very well the seriousness of chess with the visual appeal of other crappy games like Candy Crush that abound in the app stores and that millions of people love. The fact that you can have an avatar and customize it with different outfits and costumes, also gives it extra points.

Its menu is pleasing to the eye, its system easy to understand, starting to play chess will also not be a problem - it has a huge button that says PLAY in the bottom right corner - and it has other attractive gadgets such as pets, objects that you can "throw" at your opponent in the middle of a game and, of course, a ranking that is divided between the best in each country, continent and the world.

As for the games, it's the same classic chess we all know. Yes, it has its colourful details and you can see your avatar, send cool emojis and show off the new gold star you won, but it's still chess. The only detail, and the truth is something that is quite annoying and I hope they correct it soon, is that you can't see the pieces you have captured from your opponent or those that have captured you. A detail of no great importance but which, in a blitz for example, can help you to determine more quickly how many risks you will take in the next move.

For children, for everyone

Although at first glance it may seem that Chess Universe is aimed at a young/child audience, that kid whose parents want him to adopt chess as a hobby, and in fact the game has a whole section dedicated to basic and intermediate lessons, I think it can be aimed at a much wider audience. It's just that, hell, it's really fun to play chess not just for the sake of playing, but to compete for collectibles, skins and the like.

I don't want to dwell on whether or not this is good for chess as a sport (some old-school chess players will surely disagree because their beloved chess is being "sullied") I just want to talk about the video game, which is Chess Universe, and as a video game it works, it has its details, but it is still in development and I am sure that with time they will improve them and it can become a serious competition for other online chess platforms.
