I think we all have played with emulated games before, probably the cheapest and easiest to endulge the nostalgic desires of those games that we arent able to play physically, unless you go online and look a functional console and of course looking for your favorite game.
Recently my girlfriend wanted to play some games as she was bored and looking for distraction from the studies and exams, but she's not a gamer, she only remember a bunch of games from when she had a Nintendo DS and a Nintendo Wii, and that's when i started to look for Emulators and Roms for the games she wanted to play.
And that's what this post is all about, come with me while i talk about the struggles and all the stuff you have to go through to play your favorite old games, or maybe not so old games.
All the Options
Out there there's a lot of options to emulate every single console, from the really old ones to the newest-ish ones. Probably the most famous emulator is RetroArch, a program that compiles and reunites a lot of Emulating Softwares all in one place, it lets you create files and favorites browsing your favorite games that you already downloaded in your pc, with a lots of customizable options.
You can play Music, Videos, Images, play your favorite games, customize your preferences of your controllers, your graphics, optimizing and more. Even has the option of improving the graphics of old games, applying a filter so the low-poly seems a little bit more polished, and ramping up the resolution even with the capability of playing in HD Resolution.
But sometimes, it's hard to get some emulating cores on retroarch, so you probably have to do some troubleshooting through videos, reddit, blogs and doing some research in internet to get those games and emulators working.
For example, if you want to get a Wii Game working you'll probably use the Dolphin Emulating Software, but you need to deposit the Game Files (ISO) in the Dolphin Files, if you install it through retroarch you'll have a difficult time finding the specific file, in that case i recommend downloading the Dolphin Emulator apart from retroarch, and you can have all of Wii/Gamecube games in one place.
On top of that, dolphin has an accurate customizing of the Wii and Gamecube Controller, offering the option of configuring every aspect of them, as you know, wii controller was famous for it's movement and diversity of gameplay, in this emulator you can fill all the options using a simple Xbox/PC gamepad.
You can calibrate the motion, the nunchuks, the pinters, incline, oscillation, every button and basically all of Wii's Controller buttons.
As i said before, i'm talking from recent experience of trying to set up the games for my girlfriend, this includes mostly Wii and Nintendo DS games.
For the Nintendo DS games i used the DesMuMe 2015 Core on Retroarch.
Even for PS3 there's this emulator that everyone uses, RPCS3, the webpage of this emulator provide all the information you need to play, they provide a list of games compatible with the emulator and what games does not really work as they should.
You can even find a quickstart guide, a roadmap of the delevop, a github page, forum, wiki, discord community, wiki, youtube and patreon if you want to help them out.
It is a big community, we have no remember, the first PS3 it's already 16 years old, so people started to emulate games, as it's usual, obviusly the console went for years and years, and the 2006 games of PS3 are nothing alike the 2012 PS3 Super Slim Version, but there's a big community of nostalgic ones like us who grew with these consoles.
In my girlfriend's case, she wanted to play this game called Twisted Metal, unfortunately the game isn't really available to play emulated, the game isn't playable at all, peaking at 10 fps and having lots of glitches, in the previous mentioned webpage you can check out the functional games.
The Games
As for the options in games, you have it all, really. You go online looking for roms of your favorite games and you'll find them probably all of them, if older, better because it wil be easy to download in size and in variety, also you'll probably find 'hacked' roms of people customizing the games (like pokemon), and the quantity of information out there to grab for free from years and years of emulating community it's inmense, so you'll be just fine.
Now, if you want to play (like my girlfriend) some newish games, you may have some troubles. With nintendo you'll find often the term "Decrypted", that means that some Nintendo Games will require basically your data extracted from the original console, so you'll need to fine a Decrypted Rom to play that game.
Or as previous mentioned there are some unplayable games, because they're tricky to port into emulator or not very famous games. Maybe some of them aren't really available in your lenguage, so i advice you to go with USA ROMS, they are usually available.
If you want to play the Nintendo's Classic, it's totally fine, GBA, PS1 or PS2, Gameboy Color, Nintendo DS, and older consoles, you have infinite possibilites, and most of them work perfectly, having a huge catalog.
Old Emulated Games ≠ Good Performance
This is something i noticed back when i had my old laptop, but confirmed while trying to get the games going in my Girlfriends Laptop, she has a Ryzen 7, 8GB Ram without GPU Asus, it's not enough, blowing the vents at high when opening the emulators, wether she's playing Mario Kart 7 or Mario Kart DS, it's the same.
When doing test in my PC (Intel I7, 16GB RAM, RTX2060), games go great, but that's something i expect my pc to do, emulators have a lot of pull in the performance of your PC, when i tried to test Twisted Metal thinking it was a "Raw Power" issue the PS3 Emulator was pulling 70% of my CPU and 40% of my RAM.
So if you want to play emulated games, try to do some research of the performance of each game and the specific customization for every emulator to tweak something that would let you play flawlessly, things like resolution, video driver, and so on.
In the end, expect frame drops, perfomance failures if you don't have a powerful PC, and lots of tweaking to get the games working as you want, luckily for us, as i said there's a huge community able to help you out.

Creo que todos hemos jugado algun juego emulado alguna vez, es probablemente la manera más fácil y barata de satisfacer esos deseos nostálgicos de aquellos juegos que ya no podemos jugar físicamente, al menos que vayas online y busques una consola funcional y obviamente tu juego favorito.
Recientemente mi novia quiso jugar algunos juegos a raíz de estar aburrida y de buscar como distraerse de los estudios y los examenes, pero ella no suele jugar mucho, solo recuerda bastantes juegos de cuando tenía un Nintendo DS y una Wii, y ahí es cuando empecé a buscar Emuladores y Roms para los juegos que ella quería jugar.
Y de eso se trata este post, ven conmigo y te cuento mi travesía y de todas las cosas que tuve que hacer y aprendí para jugar sus viejos juegos favoritos, o bueno, no tan viejos.
Todas las opciones
Ahí fuera hay un montón de opciones para emular cada consola, desde las muy viejas hasta las relativamente nuevas. Probablemente el emulador más famoso es RetroArch, un programa que recopila y reúne muchos Softwares de Emulación en un solo lugar, te permite crear carpetas y favoritos para que puedas buscar tus juegos que ya tienes descargado en tu PC, con muchas opciones de personalización.
Puedes reproducir música, videos, imágenes, jugar tu videojuego favorito, personalizar tus preferencias de los controles, gráficos, optimización y más. Inclusive con la opción de mejorar los gráficos de juegos antiguos, aplicando un filtro para que los polígonos se vean un poco más suaves o refinados, también aumentando la resolución con la capacidad de jugar en una resolución HD.
Pero aveces, es difícil usar algunos núcleos en RetroArch, así que es muy probable que tengas que hacer algún arreglo con apoyo de videos, reddit, blogs y haciendo un poco de investigación en internet para que puedas hacerlo funcionar.
Por ejemplo, si quieres hacer funcionar un juego de Wii usará el Dolphin Emulating Software, pero necesitas depositar el archivo de juego (ISO) en las carpetas del Dolphin, si instalas el núcleo a través de RetroArch tendrás más dificultad de encontrar la carpeta específica, en ese caso recomiendo descargar el Dolphin por separado, y así puedes jugar y tener todos los juegos de Wii/Gamecube en un solo lugar.
Encima de eso, Dolphin tiene una personalización bastante precisa de control de Wii y Gamecube, ofreciendo las opciones de configurar cada aspecto del mismo, como todos sabemos el Wii fue famoso por su movimiento y diversidad de juego, en éste emulador puedes rellenar todas esas opciones para que puedas usar un simple control de Xbox/PC.
Puedes calibrar el movmiento, los "nunchuks", el apuntado, inclinación, oscilación, cada botón y básicamente todo lo referente al control.
Como dije anteriormente, estoy hablando de un experiencia reciente tratando de configurar los juegos para mi novia, ésto incluye casi exclusivamente juegos de Wii y DS.
Hablando de eso, para los juegos de DS he usado el Núcleo de DesMuMe 2015 en RetroArch.
Inclusive para el PS3 hay un emulador que todo el mundo usa, RPCS3, la pagina oficial del emulador provee toda la información que necesitas para jugar, ellos proveen una lista de juegos compatibles con el emulador y los juegos que no funcionan realmente como deberían o no funcionan en su totalidad.
Puedes encontrar una guía de inicio, un mapa de desarrollo, una pagina de github, wiki, discord, comunidad, youtube y patreon si quieres ayudarles.
Es una comunidad grande, tenemos que recordar que el primer PS3 tiene ya 16 años, así que la gente empezó a emular jugos naturalmente, obviamente la consola duró años y años y los juegos de 2006 no tienen nada que ver con los de la PS3 Super Slim de 2012, pero hay una gran comunidad de nostálgicos como nosotros que crecieron con estas consolas.
En el caso de mi novia, ella quería jugar este juego llamado Twisted Metal, desafortunadamente el juego no está realmente disponible para jugarse emulado, o más bien no se puede jugar, llegando solo a 10 fps, teniendo muchos glitches, y en la pagina previamente mencionada puedes buscar los juegos funcionales.
The Games
En las opciones para juegos, lo tienes todo realemente. Vas en línea y buscas tus juegos favoritos de tu infancia y probablemente los encontrarás, mientras más viejo mejor, porque será más fácil de descargar en peso y en vaariedad, además podrás encontrar roms "hackeadas" de gente personalziando los juegos para crear algo distinto (como las de pokemon), y la cantidad e ingormación que hay que proviene de años y años de comunidad de emulación es inmensa, así que puedes estar tranquilo.
Ahora, si quieres jugar (como mi novia) juegos nuevos, puedes tener algunos problemas. Con nintendo encontrarás el término "Decrypted/Desencriptado", significa que algunos juegos de Nintendo requerirán que extraigas datos de la consola original, por eso necesitas encontrar las ROMS desencriptadas.
O como mencionado previamente hay algunos juegos injugables, porque son complicados de portear al emulador o son juegos que no fueron demasiado famosos. A lo mejor algunos no estarán disponible en tu idioma así que si no encuentras nada solo busca la versión USA y estarán disponibles con más frecuencia.
Si quieres jugar a Clásicos de Nintendo, no tienes nada que temer, todo lo que es GBA, PS1 o PS2, Gameboy Color, Nintendo DS y consolas más viejas, juegos infinitos y posibilidades infinitas, la mayoría de ellos funcionan perfectamente con un catálogo increíble.
Juegos Viejos Emulados ≠ Buen Rendimiento
Esto es algo que noté cuando jugaba en mi laptop vieja, pero que he confirmado tratando de hacer los juegos funcionar el portátil de mi novia, la de ella tiene un Ryzen 7, 8gb de RAM y con gráficas integradas, no es suficiente, los ventiladores iban al máximo al abrir algunos juegos emulados, siendo Mario Kart 7 o Mario Kart DS, era lo mismo.
Al hacer el test en mi portátil (Intel I7, 16GB RAM, RTX2060), los juegos van totalmente bien, es el rendimiento que espero que mi pc tenga, pero ls emuladores tienden a tirar mucho del rendimiento de la PC, cuando traté de jugar Twisted Metal pensando que era algo de "Poder Puro" el emulador de PS3 estaba tirando del 70% del CPU y 40% de mi RAM.
Así que si quieres jugar juegos emulados, intenta hacer algo de investigación sobre el rendimiento de cada juego y las personalizaciones específicas para cada emulador, para arreglar algunas opciones que te deje jugar con tranquilidad, cosas como la resolución, los drives, etc.
Al final, espera caídas de FPS, fallas de Rendimiento si no tienes una PC poderosa, mucho mover y cambiar para que tus juegos favoritos funcionen como quieras, por suerte para nosotros como dije, hay una gran comunidad disponible para ayudar cuando tengas una duda.

Yo estoy ahorrando un poco de dinero para comprar mi disco duro y ponerme a descargar muchos juegos. Muchos de ellos serán clásicos y juegos que emularé. Horita estoy jugando Guild Wars 2 y la nostalgia me invadió por alguna razón, tengo ganas de jugar un rato sin pensar en nada más. Es que la razón principal es jugar clásico, yo personalmente he jugado un montón de juegos míticos de mi infancia de la PS1, Nintendo DS y GBA, la nostalgia lo puede todo, gracias al de arriba que tenemos emuladores. Y si, estaré más activo por aquí en general, estoy planeando dedicarle más tiempo a todo hive.

Los emuladores son un regalo del cielo, muchas veces me han permito jugar cosas que de otra forma no habría podido jugar y aun a día de hoy me aprovecho mucho de ello, también como tu novia he emulado muchos juegos de Ds (aunque yo en particular si cuento con dos Nintendo Ds) más que nada para disfrutar de los juegos en una pantalla más grande, como por ejemplo los Ace Attorney que más que nada los he disfrutado emulados, aunque estos no son juegos muy exigentes por ser de tipo de novela visual, aun así es refrescante poder jugarlos en una pantalla mucho más grande a los de la Ds, muy buen post. :)
Pues sí ciertamente son un regalo del cielo, hace unos meses atrás me dediqué a descargar y jugar juegos de PS1 que es la primera consola familiar que tuvimos en casa y que recuerdos. Pero también así como tú mucho juego de Nintendo DS que fue la primera consola portátil que me regalor a mi personalmente, y jugarlos en la PC todo tranquilo en pantalla grande y HD no tiene comparación.

My go to emulator is RetroArch as well and I experience the same issue with performance on my laptop. I find it best to just download and play emulator games on my phone or tablet. Being able to play classic retro games anywhere or while laying down on my bed is a huge plus.
