This game right here is one of the games of my childhood, it's a pure Arcade Fight Game with X-Men Characters, launched in 2001 for the Playstation 1, i used to play it with cousins back in the day, becuase it's a fight game without any history at all, just full arcade gameplay.

And I have a story about this game, once i was playing with a friend of mine like everyother day, i was playing with Beast and he was playing with Forge. It was a normal match, we both won a round each and were playing the last one. Then in one move he just presses buttons and Forge goes up in the air and drops a massive bomb that killed me from half health, we both had a Awe face like, What happenned?, and he jut straight won. Good days.

But let's talk about the game.

Graphics

This is a game with 2.5D graphics, it means 2D dimension as we see with most fighting games, but with some depth added. When talking about the menu, and loading screens are all 2D, the characters in the selection are 2D Comic-Style drawn aswell as the banner of the characters in the loading screen.

We can't ask for much anyways for a 2001 game, the character design it's pretty much the same models for the characters when talking about the body, it has a body-type for women and another one for the male characters, then divided by "bulky" like Beast, and Wolverine and skinny like maybe Cyclops and Magneto, but with some modifications for every style or type of character depending of which one. With clothes it's the same case, pretty basic and classic clothes for every character.

Obviusly if we are comparing this 2001 title to other titles back in that year, maybe it's quite rusty, and has not aged very well as other games like GTA 3, Final Fantasy X, Halo Combat Evolved, Devil May Cry, or even Max Payne. Yes, we can agree it's not a super production, but this game it's not abot graphics that much, it's strenght comes with the gameplay, we'll talk about it later.

When talking about effects and animations it's quite alright, we have to say that does not have a lot ot characters in the game, so it's not a massive production, has various effects on attacks, every character has a different effect, explosions, lasers and shocks are very common and that's pretty much it.

Gameplay

This is the strenght of the game, we can see that this game was developed to be "competitive" in some way, it has training, versus, survival and arcada mode.

And we can see this competitive game intention in the complexity of the combos, if you want to do the most powerfuls moves or combos, it's maybe a 5 or 6 button combination. We can see it in the the loading screen:

So we have this complicated system of combos, this game it's not about smashing buttons and maybe doing some cool combos just randomly. It's really a secuence of buttons to do the best combos or moves. You can't spam moves either, the classic of just spamming one button and canceling the opponent isn't possible here.

You have, like in other fighting games, the academy mode, you can train by yourself in the "individual training" and analizing how much damage you do with the moves you make:

Also you have the guided acadamy where the games tells you which combos to make or buttons to press that way you learn the combos or basic combos or each character:

The combos are dependent on the bar we have below, every combo depends on the state of the bar of energy, everytime you hit and get hitted the bar it's changing the state.

The Arcade mode it's the same way that every game has it, you play a game vs the AI in a best of 3 rounds, and you have to keep winning and going up the ladder.

It has anothe mode called "Survival Mode", you have to survive vs every opponent with just one chance to win, if you lose you'll have to start over, and if you win you keep playing, just to set a record of games won.

Conclusion

This game it's a nostalgic game for me, we have to be objective, isn't the better fighting game, competing with street fighter and tekken around there's basically no chance for being the better fighting game. But if you like X-Men you can play this.

It's not an awful game, or unplayable, on the contrary, it's a good game for playing with friends or just burning time. It does no have an objective to achieve, just to get better and have fun with it. And obviusly unlocking the extra characters.

But there you have it, thanks for reading.
