There are certain games and franchises that I have a fondness for, and that I'm always aware of no matter what. One of them being Shin Megami Tensei, which I've talked about in the past. A few years ago, Atlus took the risk of venturing one of their biggest franchises to another device and released a mobile game: Shin Megami Tensei Liberation D×2, which was developed by SEGA. By then, I decided to give it a try as I always do with everything SMT related, but, to my misfortune, the game kept giving me the "connection error" notification every time I loaded the home screen. After several unsuccessful attempts where I tried both Wi-Fi and mobile data, I came to the conclusion that it was probably due to the location and decided to try a VPN. Bingo, the game finally loaded, but knowing that every time I decided to play I would have to activate the VPN put me off completely and I forgot about the game. But exactly a week ago, I saw someone playing it and I was in the mood to try it again, plus the VPN is no longer needed. Without further ado, here is my one week experience with SMT Liberation D×2.

Let's start with the first thing we are shown when we start the game: the story. As usual in the MegaTen series, the plot focuses on the clash of two groups, in this case being the Liberators, which our character joins during the first minute of the game, and the Acolytes, who are shown as people who disrupt the peace and wellbeing of the common people through a series of immoral methods. Both sides make use of demons - in the game's lore those who use demons are called D×2s - so throughout the story every quest involves a battle, with the exception of the introductory and closing quests of each chapter. Also, in each chapter of the story you will be introduced to one or more liberator characters who will join your team and who you can use for the different battles; moreover, each one has a series of skills that boost certain abilities and things, such as experience and resources gained, etc. Another feature of SMT's story is the possibility to choose different dialogues and options that determine your moral alignment, although this has no significant effect on the gameplay.

The game also has an augmented reality feature, where you can talk to summon different demons that will ask you certain questions, although this feature is only accessible if your device is compatible. The graphics can be adjusted to save battery life, and you can choose between 4 graphics options (low, mid-low, medium, and high). The graphics on medium look decent, so don't worry about it looking terrible if you prefer to keep it on medium. The soundtrack isn't quite as epic or varied as other SMT games, but it's not essentially terrible either; for the most part, it reminds me of different tracks from certain Pokémon games and some Yu-Gi-Oh! games. In particular, the tracks give the feeling of a futuristic, technological atmosphere.

It is then that D×2 is conceived as a JRPG that also mixes Gacha mode, something totally new in the saga, of course. SEGA did a good job preserving the essence of the franchise and adapted it to mobile, maintaining different elements and fundamental systems, such as fusion, combat and its own mechanics, conversations with demons to recruit them, among others, as well as a PvP mode and an alternate version of the story, in which you can use the protagonist himself to fight. One of the cornerstones of the game lies in summoning, which is where the Gacha function is implemented, and for which you need the game's fundamental currency - apart from the well-known Macca, which is unique to SMT - gems.

If you want to summon demons, you need a certain amount of gems; the cost of a summon is usually not below 100 gems, although there are clear exceptions. And that's another matter, summoning has 5 types of summoning: time limited, which requires more gems and, in some cases, specific items known as tomes and files; top file, which requires mostly files; normal, which also requires a specific type of file; shard, where you exchange shards for specific demons; and extraction, where you get skills and other items; I haven't tried the latter at the time of writing this post.

Each type of summoning has different banners, each with their own requirements/cost and demons to offer, which can be of any number of stars, which indicate the rarity of the demons, with 5 being the rarest and therefore the most desired. As the name suggests, limited time is usually only available for a certain amount of time, and usually has a series of steps, working like this: for each step, you have to spend a specific amount of gems, and you will get a certain amount of demons. In some steps, you are guaranteed to get a 4 or 5 star demon, and in some steps you are even guaranteed a specific demon, which is often quite rare and hard to obtain. Despite requiring quite a few gems, they are often quite useful if your goal is to get a specific demon that is guaranteed in the banner. The superior ones also usually offer a large number of demons in the pool of each banner, but have the disadvantage that they don't usually guarantee a specific demon. The normal ones offer common demons, which you can recruit throughout the story or get easily through fusion.

Having introduced the most recognisable pillars of the game, it's time to talk about the deeper mechanics and gameplay experience. As I said, the game has things like demon fusion, where by fusing two or more demons you get another one, recruiting conversations, and so on. But it also has many other mechanics that you have to take care of if you want to have a strong enough team to complete the final chapters of the story mode as well as sweep the competitive game, although I stress that PvP requires much more effort and time than PvE. The game offers different methods of customisation and enhancement for the demons, these being: enhance, which allows you to level up without fighting and by using a specific item or sacrificing other demons; awaken, where you awaken the power hidden deep within the demons; evolve, which allows you to increase the star level and, consequently, the stats of your demons. There are also others such as brands, where you assign your demons different pieces that increase certain stats, skills transfer, which, as the name suggests, lets you transfer the skill from one demon to another, and then there are spirit merge, transcend and mitama, which are even more complex than the previous ones.

All this may seem like a lot when you start the game, especially if you complete the first 5 story chapters in a few days. However, each mechanic includes a tutorial that is shown when you access it after unlocking it and even after that you can always read the most important part of the instructions by pressing an icon in the top right corner. Another point to note is that each of these functions requires various items or demons, so it requires a lot of gleaning and thought when deciding which demons to sacrifice. As you progress through the game, you will undoubtedly make the decision to get rid of certain demons sooner or later, especially if your goal is to engage in PvP. It is advisable to review and read up on certain demon Tier lists and their corresponding customisations before delving into each of these aspects of customisation and upgrading.

Now, do I think it is difficult for a new player to build a good team? Not really. The game offers many events every month, and many of the resources used and that are very precious (Gems, MAG, Macca, etc.) are farmeable and after a certain time in the game you will get them more abundantly, but, obviously, it requires a lot of time and patience. Also, the gacha is quite tolerable, and every now and then they release banners and gift or login bonuses where they give away gems and files for summons. So even if you plan to spend little or no money on the game, you're still going to get good demons, it's just clearly going to take a little longer compared to those who do decide to spend money to get gems.

What I should point out is that new players may not be able to obtain certain event characters that were past collaborations with other franchises, including Bayonetta, Guts and Griffith from Berserk, DMC, NNT, although SEGA always has the ability to rerun such events, so it's a matter of waiting. That aside, getting the rarest and strongest demons in the game is entirely possible for new players, the question is, of course, at what cost? Time, time and time, and having randomness and RNG or luck on your side, if you prefer to call it that.

In closing this post, I can say that SEGA did their homework in bringing the essence of SMT to the mobile world, as well as combining the Gacha mode without ending in catastrophic results. It's a pretty complete game, that doesn't waste the opportunity to make the player think about strategies, as well as constantly throwing events and demons even after 4 years of its initial release. And while I feel that they could have made better use of certain mechanics - such as the moral alignment that has always played a big part in the story of the various instalments of the saga - the game shines in the other features and modes it has implemented, so certain details like the one I mentioned above are not a fundamentally negative result for the game.

There will be a day when I finally get through a SMT game. But that day is not today, I've seen people dump some serious hours into those games. I am happy to see more titles come to mobile!
