Ah yes! good ole simons quest! A funny story about this game is when it came out my neighbor who happens to be our church pastor their son had this game and i would go over to his house to watch him play the game. We both had problems figuring some of the puzzles but we figured it out. I eventually got this game for my own collection and got as far as i could. I have yet to beat this game since with how complex it was to progress I lose track of where I been. What i do love about this game is the day and night cycle. I always hated it when it was night cause that is when it got harder and felt like it was always night in the game!

It is a tough game. I beat it without a guide but man, my parents were mad when they discovered I used one of my spiral notebooks for keeping notes. This was back when school supplies ran out - there never seemed to be enough for everyone that needed them (and I was young so I didn't realize why they were mad back then).

I had played the first Castlevania and did alright in it but was not a big fan of it. I borrowed Simon's Quest in a trade with a friend and ended up buying my own copy.

It was such a unique experience - day and night cycle, the way the cities change, the exploration element, etc. For me, prior to Castlevania II I had only really played games like Super Mario Bros where you only could go one way. There was no real exploration and backtracking to see what you missed. There was no real puzzle solving either in games like Super Mario Bros.

but see that's the thing! Legend of Zelda was a puzzle of a game too and i managed to beat that! Well more of a maze then a puzzle when you think about it but either way you explored the game and tried many things to find out if you missed anything or not. With simons quest if it weren't for the day/night cycle you can easily explore and not worry about dieing. It kind of prepped you for minecraft 20 years later LOL

I never completed the original Zelda. I did beat the second one and the third one, on Super Nintendo. I just could never beat the first one for some reason. I had friends that could walk through it, no problem.

That is an interesting tidbit about connecting Simon's Quest to Minecraft. Never thought about that before. Good catch.

It's the only castlevania game I have finished! Remember at some point having to use the walkthrough found in the official Nintendo magazine. Now knowing about the localisation it feel much better.

I remember beating it without using guides but man, that took probably 5 or 6 hours longer than it should have because of all the doing random stuff in places I was stuck. I also had a spiral notebook full of notes from this game. I wrote down everything, tried deciphering the tips, etc.

I did not know about the Nintendo Power guide till years later when I found several issues at a yard sale. That would have saved me a ton of time. Lol.

It would have probably been a lot easier with a proper localization as well. I need to replay this one using one of those patches. It cannot be as hard as it was with Konami's official translation. Lol

There are a ton of games patches over on that ROMHacking.net website, not just translation updates. Some get pretty interesting - changing various characters between games, swapping enemies, or whole levels, etc.
