Hola, holaaaaa!!
Today I want to share something that I undoubtedly inherited from my grandmother, her love for plants. When I was a child I lived with her for some years and I could notice her love for plants, especially ornamentals, although she eventually grew some fruit trees such as plums, avocados, lemons, tangerines and oranges.
Hoy quiero compartir algo que sin duda heredé de mi abuela, el amor por las plantas. Cuando era niña viví con ella por algunos años y pude notar ese amor que sentía por las plantas, especialmente ornamentales, aunque eventualmente llegó a cultivar algunas frutales como ciruela de huesito, aguacate, limón, mandarinas y naranjas.
My grandmother is 78 years old, today she still has the same dedication to growing plants as 25 years ago, when I lived with her, now when I visit my homeland, Carúpano, one of the things I enjoy the most is to contemplate her garden, and this year was no exception. This time I took the task of searching through Google lens my grandmother's plants to know more details about their care and characteristics and thus see how accurate was her millenary and ancestral way of paying attention to her little plants.
Mi abuela tiene 78 años, hoy en día sigue teniendo la misma dedicación a cultivar plantas de hace 25 años, cuando viví con ella, ahora cuando voy de visita a mi tierra natal, Carúpano, una de las cosas que más disfruto es contemplar su jardín, y este año no fue la excepción. Esta vez me tomé la tarea de buscar a través de Google lens las plantas de mi abuela para saber más detalles sobre sus cuidados y características y así ver cuan acertada era es manera milenaria y ancestral de la doña de ponerle atención a sus plantitas.
The first thing to admire were her Calas, whose scientific name is Anthurium sp, she has red, pink and yellow ones, she places in the substrate dry coconut shells, when I was a child I found it curious, today I understand that it is because they are plants that require a good level of humidity and this idea helps to preserve them very well. I want to clarify that my grandmother never studied and neither has the experience of working in the field, these are things that she did instinctively. Curious, isn't it? Another interesting fact about this plant is that its flowers are actually modified leaves, and in its spadix, which is the stick in the center, is where the flowers and fruits of this plant really emerge. Lo primero en admirar fueron sus Calas, cuyo nombre científico es Anthurium sp, tiene rojas, rosadas y amarillas, ella coloca en el sustrato conchas de coco secas, cuando era niña me parecía curioso, hoy en día entiendo que es debido a que son plantas que requieren un buen nivel de humedad y esta idea ayuda a conservarla muy bien. Quiero aclarar que mi abuela nunca estudió y tampoco tiene la experiencia del trabajo en el campo, son cosas que hizo instintivamente. Curioso no? Otro dato interesante de esta planta es que sus flores realmente son hojas modificadas, y en su espádice que es el palito que está en el centro, es donde emergen realmente las flores y los frutos de esta planta. It has very beautiful pink roses, known as Rosa rugosa, they call the attention because they always have flowers, in any season, of course, in Venezuela we only have rain and drought, but this little plant is luxurious! It grows as a bush and the flowers are solitary and small. My grandmother reproduces it through branches that she prunes and leaves to soak until she takes rootlets and from there a new plant emerges, that is why she has it in several places, in the patio and in her front garden. This plant is caducifolia, a term I learned when I was a child on a visit to the botanical garden of Ciudad Bolivar and I felt it as an illumination in my mind, I started to see plants of this type everywhere, the most characteristic of them is that their stem is green, in order to perform photosynthesis through it, this with the intention of continuing to generate energy despite losing their leaves, which are detached in order not to lose water through evaporation, usually occurs in drought. As my grandmother waters them constantly we have not seen this in her rose seedlings.
Tiene unas rosas rosadas, conocidas como Rosa rugosa muy hermosas, llaman la atención porque siempre tienen flores, en cualquier estación, claro está, en Venezuela solo tenemos lluvia y sequía, igual está de lujo está plantita! Crece en forma de arbusto y las flores son solitarias y pequeñas. Mi abuela la reproduce a través de ramas que ella poda y deja en remojo hasta sacar raicillas y de allí surge una nueva planta, por eso la tiene en varias partes, en el patio y en su jardín frontal. Esta en planta es caducifolia, un término que aprendí cuando era niña en una visita al jardín botánico de Ciudad Bolívar y lo sentí como una iluminación en mi mente, empecé a ver plantas de este tipo en todos lados, lo más característico de ellas es que su tallo es verde, para poder realizar fotosíntesis a través de él, esto con la intención de seguir generando energía a pesar de perder sus hojas, que se desprenden con el fin de no perder agua a través de la evaporación, normalmente ocurre en sequía. Como mi abuela las riega constantemente no hemos visto esto en sus plantitas de rosas.
Another flower that is one of my favorites is the Cayenne, in Carúpano it is also known as Cachupina, there are different colors, single and double, I love them, this time my grandmother grew a double yellow Cayenne, she usually sows others and so she replaces them. The colors of its flowers are very vivid and showy and at night they close and seem to have wilted, the next day they are in their maximum splendor, it is impressive! My grandmother uses the flowers to make a tea to relieve insomnia and anxiety. Also, if you use the infusion on your hair, it gives it strength and shine, not to mention that it helps stop hair loss.
Otra flor que es de mis favoritas, es la Cayena , en Carúpano la conocen también como Cachupina, hay de distintos colores, sencillas y dobles, me encantan, esta vez mi abuela cultivo una Cayena Amarilla doble, ella suele sembrar otras y así va sustituyendo. Los colores de sus flores son muy vivos y llamativos y en la noche se cierran y pareciera que marchitaron, al día siguiente están en su máximo esplendor, es impresionante!. Mi abuela usa las flores para hacer un té que sirve para aliviar el insomnio y la ansiedad. Además si se usa la infusión en el cabello le otorga fuerza y brillo, sin contar que ayuda a detener la caída.
There is a little white flower that I never knew its name, but it smells really delicious! It is a jasmine ! It is delicate the plant as a whole, the leaves have a shiny dark green color, they look fake. But it really doesn't require that much care, my grandmother prunes it to keep it small and she always has flowers, but they don't last long, it just has buds that allow for constant blooming.
Hay una florecita blanca que nunca había sabido su nombre, pero huele realmente delicioso! Es un jazmín ! Es delicada la planta en su totalidad, las hojas tiene un color verde oscuro brillante, parecen falsas. Pero realmente no requiere de tanto cuidado, mi abuela la poda para mantenerla pequeña y ella siempre tiene flores, pero estás no duran mucho, solo que tiene botones que permite la floración constante.
Oh, I can't overlook El Trébol Morado ! In short, I love this specimen of my grandmother, the leaves are butterfly-shaped and the flower is beautiful, tiny and with a very subtle lilac color, my grandmother takes care of it with great affection because it is delicate, needs indirect light and good drainage.
Uy no puedo dejar pasar por alto El Trébol Morado ! , en definitiva me encanta este ejemplar de mi abuela, las hojas tienen forma de mariposa y la florecita es bellísima, chiquita y con un color lila bastante sutil, mi abuela la cuida con mucho cariño porque si es delicada, precisa de luz indirecta y buen drenaje.
Looking in the lower part of the garden, only fed by the indirect sun rays, my grandmother has a Bella at eleven o'clock, also called Portulacaria It is a nice specimen because it is the one with the small flowers. This plant is beautiful because it can spread like grass, but with flowers that are displayed in full splendor at noon!
Al mirar en la parte baja del jardín, solo alimentada por los rayos del sol indirectos, mi abuela tiene unas Bella a las once, también llamada Portulacaria , es un lindo ejemplar porque es da la que tiene las flores pequeñas. Esta planta es linda porque se puede extender cual grama, pero con flores que se exhiben a todo esplendor a pleno mediodía!
There are more flowers to be named, and other plants that give life to my grandmother's gardens, but without a doubt there is one flower that surpasses the others, it is her, my Ana Margarita, my grandmother herself.
Faltan más flores por nombrar, y otras plantas que dan vida a los jardines de mi abuela, pero sin duda hay una flor que supera a las demás, es ella, mi Ana Margarita, mi misma abuela.
