The Flicker Haven Farm Files-A Sprout Progress And Garden Post Roundup

Spring is coming! Well, it is actually snowing outside, but still, I can see parts of my yard (for the moment) so I know that the season of growth is nigh!

Heh. That sounded like a sarcastic line from a Monty Python sketch....

Anyway, yesterday I transplanted the rest of the pepper sprouts. I also had an epic, clutztastic fail. My seedlings are kept on a grow shelf in my master bathroom, and I needed to bring out the pepper sprout tray to put the rest of the ready to be transplanted sprouts in. Me being me, I thought it would be smarter to carry the bag of soilless growing medium and the tray of sprouts. The thing is, I have this cat who I am pretty sure is trying to kill me. I mean at least it is with kindness. Or is it?

IMG_4762.jpg
If I ever get maimed or go missing, I can almost guarantee this creature will be the cause.

So, here I was was, walking the twenty or so feet with the seedling tray on one arm and the bag of growing medium tucked under the other, when out of nowhere Dogcat ran between both of my legs as I was in motion.

There was a bit of pepper plant carnage. Sigh.

But, I have been practicing not staying in a negative emotion feelings trough for too long. So, I thought to myself, "Well, only half of the peppers became floor fodder" and "They are still babies, they will re-transplant and keep on thriving." I then put a smile on my face, grabbed the broom, uttered a poem of well-wishing for the continued welfare of the perfect, sweet, leg-kerfluffling feline who inadvertently gave me a chance to practice my Stoic training, and continued on.

IMG_4742.jpg

Yesterday, the ghost peppers, rainbow bells, anaheims, and habaneros were ready for transplanting. I got them settled quickly and also started a few arnica and hollyhock seeds. This year, with all the ish that is going on in the world, especially in the fuel, food, and inflation department, I am really focusing on my food production. Every little bit you produce can offset an increase in prices elsewhere. However, I am also making sure I grow and experiment more with medicinal plants.

And no one ever needed an excuse to grow flowers.

IMG_4744.jpg
You don't have to spend money on growing containers! We have a few massive parties throughout the year, so I wash and save all the drink cups and reuse them for planters, they work great!

After getting the plants tucked into their new growing environment, I cleaned up my mess and smiled, for there is something so internally gratifying about producing your own sustenance. Even the smallest thing, such as a pepper sprout, is the promise of joy down the road, while also bringing joy just because it is.

And on that note, here's a list of previous gardening info posts I have made here over the years. This list was inspired by @thisismylife's awesome series for Listnerds newbies. She does such a great job of crafting wonderful content that facilitates growth and then presents it in a way that makes it easy to access. In that thankful vein, here's a list of what I have shared in grow your own food land over the years:

I hope you all enjoy the posts as much as I did writing them up! And I love, love, love to chew on the figure it out fat with ya'll! Please share all your gardening experiences or lack there of, or tell me you think I am a loon. I like it all!

And as most of the time, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's still has growing medium in its cracks from the great Cat Pepper Sprout Carnage Incident iPhone.

Sort:

Geez, that could have been me tripping over the 21 year old cat who is always "helping". Or it could have been yesterday when I was tiptoeing around the vacuum in the middle of the floor with the 22" x 11" trays full of seedlings.... But perhaps my husband was watching out for me, because no mishaps happened....

helping ha haha ha! Yes! They are often more help than I need at exactly the wrong moment!

I am glad you got some watching over, because just reading the words seedlings and vacuum made an involuntary shiver pass down my spine! Glad to hear you made it through that unscathed😊

It's the best season for planting, about me I love growing mint, hot tea is good at night🍵

Ooh! Mint tea is so yummy! I love to mix mint and lavender together for tea!

Good post, @generikat. This will be a good year for people to plant even a small garden to help offset the rising fuel costs. Grown at home tastes better and is a whole lot cheaper.

Thanks @beststart! This year is definitely the year for sure to try to offset the pocket book pain that we are all feeling and going to feel even more. Plus, you are so right, it tastes so much better! I just cracked open a jar of canned tomatoes that I grew and process last summer, and it smells so awesome!

I am equally from that school of thought too, that there is nothing more healthy, tasty and beautiful than what one planted and harvested from his own garden. The rain brings opportunities for something new to grow, and I cannot wait to get started in my own garden too.

That was just so well said @gratitudemine! There's going to be healthy, yummy food growing everywhere before long!

Oi! Are those posts in chronological or alphabetical order? I demand proof of residual librarianship here!

They are in chronological descending order. That information is for those interested not the self proclaimed authoritarians, er I mean residual librarians lurking about...😁

You just made me smile with this one (^_^), that is a mean cat...

By the way I am excited to see your newly transplanted pepper sproutd to grow.

Ha ha! What's especially hilarious is that she is super luvey. I think that's part of her act though...lol!

Thanks for dropping by!

You're welcome (^_^)

Does it work with salt or only pepper?

Well, neither, but I am sure the pepper plants might like a bit of seasoning at some point in their lives.😃

I think paper cups are a good option to save money. I tend to just throw them away after I use them but it might be a good idea to keep some around if I need them.

Since I live out in the woods and hate taking a trip to town just for one or two things, I find myself saving a repurposing stuff all the time, those cups work great!

Love this post, and very curious to see how your pepper seedlings will grow up. We already have sowed our own pepper and paprika seeds here. And I'm so happy that we are seeing the sun here for the last days. Today it really feels like SPRING with 15 Celsius.

And I love your killer cat. Just imagine that I do the garden job with 3 dogs trying to kill me with their love. And trying to walk when a shepherd dog throws her ball right before your feet is almost impossible. But we learn as we go. Lol

Ooh! I am so jealous! It was a blistering -10C this morning, so although the sun is out and it's warming up now a bit, it definitely doesn't feel like spring round here, I so hope you are out enjoying it!

Peppers take forever don't they? But about 4.5 months from now the results will be so so yummy!

Pets crack me up! Like with toddlers, I always have more help than I need when I am trying to do something! In fact, my corgi is lying on my feet right now ha ha! And I so hear ya on the trying to kill you with the ball toss thing, some of my dogs are professionals at that I swear! Hang in there😂

Pepper plants are looking good. I am sure the cat protecting them has a lot to do with their growth. Thanks for sharing.

LOL! Yes, the cat trying to destroy them and me is just toughening them up for life! 🤣

Thanks @rcaine!

Beautiful plants! Came here from lisnerds.

Thank you so much! Listnerds is the greatest!

Well, what a wonderful surprise. I did not have to wait 2 days between posts. 😀

Loved seeing your human killer cat. Lol.

lol! Well, I have a goal of a minimum of five posts a week, so once in a while I sneak an extra post in there!

Kajit, AKA Dogcat is the matriarch of the household, she's very lovey, but honestly it's in a sort of suspect way sometimes...

And I'm excited that you pointed out my positivity win! That means a lot coming from you!

Gonna head your blog's way in a bit, hope all is well!

Good luck with your plants.😎
Have the best day came from Listnerds
@generikat

Nice! This time of year is the hardest because we are about 8 weeks out from our last frost date, 4 weeks from being able to plant anything outside, and even then that date can be tricky lol! The joys of living in a snowbelt ha ha!

Hope your garden work goes awesome! And thanks for stopping by😊

I wish all the best to your pepper plants. They'll grow up sturdy and strong because of all they went through and because of your love and attention :)

@tipu curate

Aww, thank you @ervin-lemark! That makes me feel a warm glow that's not just from me sitting 12 inches from my blazing woodstove😁

Well, I am about to walk the dog in the evening and call it a day. It was good enough after a long weekend in the mountains and in the snow.
