My Crazy Crazy Weekend - Saving my garden from mongoose

in HiveGarden8 days ago (edited)

This time my weekend was quite crazy. Last time in one of the blogs I shared about my mini garden at home. For the last two months a mongoose had been coming to our garden and every time it was making a burrow.

Every time we would fill its burrow with soil and then it would come and make another burrow. But this time, after waking up as usual in the morning on Saturday, when I reached to look at the flowers, I saw that many burrows had been made in the garden. They destoryed chillies, brinjal and bitter gourd. We were afraid it might have made a home in the soil to give birth. So I had to call the gardener. Mostly, we call him when we need to change the potting soil or move it upside down.

Before gardener Bhaiya came, I watched some videos on YouTube about the natural way to keep away mongooses from the house. But I found many funny videos. In most of the videos it was told that there is treasure under the burrow where mongooses make their homes. And there was also a suggestion that one should dig it so that the treasure can be taken out.
In some videos there were such methods by which they could be killed and in some I had written that where there are snakes, there are mongooses. So all these videos did not help me at all and finally after talking to gardner Bhaiya we decided that why not remove all the pots and keep this place completely empty for some time so that the mongoose does not get a supportive environment to live here and goes somewhere else to make thier home.

With this hope, we have now placed some light flower pots on the wall on a temporary basis. In winters there is no danger of keeping pots on the wall but in summers if a strong wind blows the pots can fall. Secondly, on these walls we keep food for birds and squirrels so that they can eat their food safely away from our cat Lemon. Now it was the turn of bigger pots which took a lot of effort to lift and place at another place.

I removed the smaller pots and kept them on the walls and Mali Bhaiya removed the bigger ones and kept them in the lower area nearby. After the entire area was cleaned, Mali Bhaiya brought soil from a nearby area and filled this area with more soil and closed all the holes made by the mongoose. And in the middle of that time I made a hot cup of tea for gardener Bhaiya. Now since gardener Bhaiya always brings a variety of seasonal flowers in a small truck like vehicle, we bought some beautiful flowers of this season.

All my sadness about shifting the entire garden vanished with the new seasonal flowers. Now I hope these mongooses don't come to our house, but I can't say anything yet.

I have put up our cat's nack bell in the garden and tied it with a long thin thread, and that thread goes straight to my room. Whenever I stay awake at night, I shake this thread two or three times so that the sound of the bell will scare away the mongooses if they are there.

This is all going to be quite a long game. Mongoose did not come on Sunday and Monday, I hope they do not come in future also and I can see my garden as beautiful as always.

Around here, besides ants, leaf eaters, and birds, my neighbors are opossums. It's quite an adventure with these little animals. Your cat has me thinking. I have five, and they are the apples of my eye.
