Hey amigos como están?, hace mucho tiempo atrás sembramos en nuestro terreno algunas semillas de sandia y melón para tener una cosecha para nuestro hogar, también un poco a modo de prueba. El resultado fue regular, obtuvimos buenos frutos, sin embargo el modo de siembra fue incorrecto, por que sembramos todo muy junto y no tenían suficiente espacio para crecer, no se hizo un tratamiento adecuado con insecticidas ni fungicidas y tampoco una buena buena fertilización.
Hey friends, a long time ago we sowed some watermelon and melon seeds in our land to have a harvest for our home, also as a little test. The result was regular, we got good fruits, however the way of sowing was wrong, because we sowed everything very close together and they did not have enough space to grow, we did not make a proper treatment with insecticides or fungicides and neither a good fertilization.
El plan para esta ocasión es hacerlo mucho mejor y con todas las medidas, nos dimos cuenta que con 20 plántulas de cada una es suficiente para tener muchos frutos.
Yo las germine en mi casa, tuve el 95% de germinación en ambos casos y el resultado es realmente increíble, estoy muy satisfecho con ello, así que quiero mostrarles un poco como fue el proceso de esta labor.
The plan for this time is to do much better and with all the measures, we realized that with 20 seedlings of each one is enough to have many fruits.
I germinated them at home, I had 95% germination in both cases and the result is really incredible, I am very satisfied with it, so I want to show you a little how was the process of this work.

Para esto utilice semillas que ya tenia de melón y sandia, el tipo del melón era muy similar al cantalupo, un tipo cuya pulpa es muy dulce, la cascara muy fina y las semillas pequeñas, y el tipo de sandia mexicana (no conozco su nombre especifico), pero se que fue introducida en el mercado aquí y es originaria de ese lugar, ya que es mas pequeña, redonda y cómoda para guardar en pequeños espacios.
Para utilizar estas semillas, se debe extraer de un fruto maduro, luego se deben dejar secar en la sombra y podrán ser utilizadas.
For this I used seeds that I already had of melon and watermelon, the type of melon was very similar to the cantaloupe, a type whose pulp is very sweet, the skin very thin and the seeds small, and the type of Mexican watermelon (I do not know its specific name), but I know that it was introduced in the market here and is native to that place, since it is smaller, rounder and comfortable to keep in small spaces.
To use these seeds, you must extract them from a ripe fruit, then let them dry in the shade and they can be used.
También compre un sobre de semillas "semejantes o variedad" eso se refiere a semillas extraídas de frutos cosechaos de plantas hibridas y tratadas con un fungicida. El tipo de semilla era sandia Charleston Gray, una sandia americana muy común aquí hace años atrás antes que se introdujera la variedad mexicana.
Como la Charleston Gray era muy grande y llegaba a pesar hasta 15kg, no era muy cómoda ni practica para llevar, sin embargo por la demanda ahora es mas rentable sembrar esta semillas por que tiene mayor peso y mayores ganancias.
I also bought a sachet of "look-alike or variety" seeds, which refers to seeds extracted from fruits harvested from hybrid plants and treated with a fungicide. The seed type was Charleston Gray watermelon, an American watermelon very common here years ago before the Mexican variety was introduced.
As the Charleston Gray was very large and weighed up to 15kg, it was not very comfortable or practical to carry, however due to demand it is now more profitable to plant this seed because it is heavier and more profitable.
El sustrato o compost que utilice, fue de la siguiente manera:
Tierra negra (tierra con muchos nutrientes ideal para plantas) extraída se mi invernadero luego de las lluvias.
Tierra negra pero hecha compost que me regalaron en la universidad (ya que tiene conchas de arroz y otros elementos).
Fertipollo, el fertipollo es un compost hecho con eses de animales como gallinas, caballos, vacas y mezclado con conchas de arroz y cascaras de huevo. La palabra Ferti (Viene de fertilizante) y pollo (que es hecho de las eses del pollo).
The substrate or compost I used was as follows:
Black soil (soil with many nutrients ideal for plants) extracted from my greenhouse after the rains.
Black soil but made into compost that was given to me at the university (because it has rice shells and other elements).
Fertipollo, the fertipollo is a compost made with animal excrement from chickens, horses, cows and mixed with rice shells and egg shells. The word Ferti (comes from fertilizer) and pollo (which is made from chicken carcasses).
Todo esto se mezcla muy bien y tendremos nuestro sustrato de germinación.
All this is mixed very well and we will have our germination substrate.
Las bandejas de germinación me las regalaron en la universidad y estaban muy deterioradas pero aun funcionan, no son las mas aptas para germinar este tipo de semillas pero funcionan. También se pueden usar bolsas plásticas o envases de alimentos vacíos.
The germination trays were given to me in college and they were very deteriorated but they still work, they are not the most suitable for germinating this type of seeds but they work. You can also use plastic bags or empty food containers.
Para que la tierra no se saliera de la bandera coloque algunas rocas pequeñas en el fondo, de esta manera se sostenía y el agua igual salía por allí. Esta recomendación la aplique en el vivero de cocuy.
Coloque tierra hasta un nivel medio, para luego probar las semillas en agua y colocarlas en la bandeja, luego se tapan con una capa muy fina de tierra.
La prueba de agua es que las semillas que usualmente se hunden funcionan, pero las que flotan no germinaran.
In order to keep the soil in the flag, I placed some small rocks at the bottom of the flag, this way the soil was supported and the water still flowed out of the flag. I applied this recommendation in the cocuy nursery.
Place soil to a medium level, then test the seeds in water and place them in the tray, then cover them with a very thin layer of soil.
The water test is that the seeds that usually sink will work, but those that float will not germinate.
Cuando están tapadas se riegan un poco y se dejan bajo el sol.
When they are covered they are watered a little and left in the sun.
Lo mismo hice con la semilla Charleston Gray, pero lo hice en bolsas para que se desarrollaran mejor, y las coloque en una cesta de manera de no manipular mucho las semillas.
I did the same with the Charleston Gray seed, but I did it in bags so that they would develop better, and placed them in a basket so as not to handle the seeds too much.
Luego solo queda regarlas 1 vez al día, la germinación debería ser al día 5to o 6to día, al momento que las semillas están en contacto con la tierra y el agua, allí comienza el proceso.
Exactamente el día 5 comenzaron a germinar poco a poco, en el transcurso de 12h de 6am o 6pm, ya las plantas de sandia habían salido de la tierra, las de melón tardaron un día mas.
Then it only remains to water them once a day, germination should be on the 5th or 6th day, the moment the seeds are in contact with the soil and water, there begins the process.
Exactly on the 5th day they started to germinate little by little, in the course of 12 hours from 6am or 6pm, the watermelon plants had already come out of the ground, the melon plants took a day longer.
En cuanto a las otras semillas de sandia, solo una planta germino, estuve revisando el sustrato y no hay rastro de semilla, al parecer algo se las comió.
As for the other watermelon seeds, only one plant germinated, I was checking the substrate and there is no trace of seed, apparently something ate them.
Y actualmente las semillas están muy bonitas y altas, en una semana aproximadamente cuando tenga nuevas hojas las trasplantaremos a la tierra y aquí comenzártenos con el tratamiento adecuado.
And currently the seeds are very nice and tall, in about a week when it has new leaves we will transplant them into the ground and here we will start with the appropriate treatment.

Oye que bueno. Creo que la extracción orgánica de las semillas, es la mejor forma de obtener las semillas. Por aquí donde vivo, las semillas que se venden, mayormente están vendidas, y solo un 10% se da. Que bueno que te haya ido bien , realmente espero ver el trasplante.
Si a mi también me ha pasado con semillas originales que tienen test vencido, no germinan, o germinan muy pocas.
Lo mejor es seleccionar nuestra propia semilla, ademas vienen climatizadas con el clima de Venezuela. Se aptan que es lo bueno
