The market is full of products, services and brands with the same or similar characteristics in terms of price, quality and the qualities that define them; this is what we know in marketing as commodities.

Let's think of any product, for example, a coffee maker. We place the word in the search engine and we obtain more than 17 million results in half a minute, a mosaic of images that show us different models, colors, shapes and in this first page we are also presented with the links to go to the different types: express, electric, electric, ribbed, used, new, small, industrial. The same product, the same function, many brands that may offer similar prices and qualities.

Now, how can each of these companies position itself in the market, what will make the difference so that customers will prefer one and not another? Definitely, it will not be the product, and here I think Jürgen Klaric's statement in his book "Sell to the mind, not to the people" is very accurate:

"innovation means offering added value to people through the products and services we sell them".

I emphasize added value to people because, contrary to what we usually hear, the focus is on the person (potential customer) and not on the product.

Following the example of the coffee maker, while I was writing, I remembered an advertisement launched many years ago by a well-known brand of household appliances. It told a brief story in which a young couple rode horses through a desert, in a clear allegory of intimacy and in very specific words it sold freedom and shared time, closing with its usual jingle: "Tiempo libre, tiempo Oster" (Free time, Oster time). Here you have 20 seconds of the video.

Oster in its advertising does not directly sell us the coffee maker, it shows us, what it sells us is time and the pleasure of enjoying it when we have its products.

This whole story serves to place us in one of the most important aspects of our venture and that we already mentioned when we made the template of the canvas model, in the customer segment.

In this first stage, if we have done our homework well, our business idea is based on an observed need or desire, and we have also found its feasibility by carefully studying the market and the competition. Among so many ideas that come and go, in general, we have formed an image of who are those people to whom our product or service will provide a solution or answer.

This broad group of people is what we call target or target audience, it is not a new concept, every business is born having in mind the public to whom the product is aimed and today there are other tools that help to better define our customer such as the ideal customer and the buyer persona, which in future installments will detail, today we will focus on this target audience.

To define our target audience we have to think about the characteristics and qualities of the people who may be our potential customers, those who may be interested in the product or service we offer and from there focus on attracting them. To carry out this work it is suggested that we consider the following parameters:

1.- Demographic profile. Specifically gender, age and location.

2.- Socio-cultural profile. Here we will include: economic level, educational level, something about their customs, values, places they attend.

3.- Digital profile. In which social networks do they interact, how often, in which topics do they focus their search.

Let's make an example with this data

target-group-g1b83e0e13_1920.jpg

Let's imagine that our business is in the food industry, specifically in the concept of healthy food, specifically in the production of granola and related products.

Our target audience are men and women between 18 and 40 years old who love sports activities, healthy food, high in fiber and full of energy. They are locally based.

They are students and professionals with medium-high purchasing power, who go to the gym three times a week and also like outdoor physical activity. They value holistic health, while taking great care of their physical presence.

They are 100% active on social networks using most frequently twitter and Instagram where they share photos of sports activities they perform and products and foods they consume.

As we can see, defining and knowing our target audience is fundamental for our value proposition, because it is by thinking about these people, their needs, that we can find the added value that we are going to offer them and that will be what makes them fix their gaze on the product we offer.
