Fresh catch of the day on the beach front in Da Nang

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY13 days ago

I finished work at an early time yesterday and it was sprinking rain but not really coming down so I decided to go for a walk on the beach.

In my mind this is the perfect time to be there because the little bit of rain keeps most of the tourists away and the paths are clear and just nicer without needing to dodge a bunch of people. While I was on this walk I discovered a few things that I had forgotten about because I don't normally make it as far down the road as I did this time.

Once you get away from the central tourist area on the beach, the pathways remain nice and easy to walk on, but the amount of people that are down there is damn near zero. This is especially true when there is an annoying drizzle happening that just refuses to end. The paths are nicely maintained but this is still Vietnam, so of course there is plastic garbage all over the place.

When I emerged at the other end of this tree-tunnel I noticed a bunch of people gathered on the beach near the water, all staring down.

My first reaction before I got close was that something terrible had happened and these people were there to help but as I got closer I could see (and smell) what was really going on.

These are the daily fishermen that come to these spots with drag nets and pull in whatever ocean fish they can. The side of the road was lined with motorbikes and from what I could gather, this is the time of day that these fishermen do this every day and the people that arrive on the bikes and in some cars are here to take advantage of a properly fresh catch of the day.

You can see the large nets on the sand right next to them. I got a bit closer but started feeling nervous about getting in the way so you'll just have to take my word for it for now but the fish were really tiny and not that impressive. This is a bit concerning to me because it could mean that they are catching really small juvenile fish. Is this a sign of over-fishing? Well, this is Vietnam so I think they will stop fishing only once there is nothing left to take.

Let's keep the doom and gloom out of the picture for now though. I guess if you are really into truly fresh fish and don't mind the fact that they are swimming around what is basically a rather dirty and plastic-filled pool, then this is the place to go for that sort of thing.

I'm not really a fan of fish, or any seafood for that matter, so this will not be something that I take advantage of any time soon. But the locals seem to be very aware of the timing on when the nets come back in at 3pm on the dot. It was actually kind of complicated for me to walk on the sidewalk past this part because there were so many people here.

This is down in the Son Tra area of the beach and it is visited by far fewer people in the area.

Son Tra looks like it is an area where the municipality thought that tourism or even residences would expand to that area as well, but it just never really happened. As it is now that area has to do some things before this will ever change such as getting the giant and dirty boat parking area to the north out of there.

In the meantime though I guess it is good that these fishermen can make a bit of money and the locals seem to be really excited about it seeing as how all of them were willing to come out here in the rain in order to make it happen.

I'll check back at exactly the same time at some point in the near future because I can't imagine that anyone would turn up if it wasn't at the same time of day, every day.

I do love the "market culture" of food acquisition in Vietnam. There are grocery stores, but the locals seem to prefer going to the source and skipping the middleman. I lack the language skills to do this so I'll be going to the supermarket, probably for the entire time I live here.

Sort:

Going directly to the source is saving a lot of money, I would rather skip the middleman and buy directly to the source.
