Some decent street art finds in an abandoned building

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITYlast month

I went for a walk outside of the main area of town today because on a motorbike the other day I had noticed some tags near the street. I am not a fan of shitty tags, but I have found that the horrible vandalism tags can often be an indicator or something much better that might be nearby. In this particular instance I was correct, although little of what I found was particularly amazing.

These faded tags are what I noticed while I was on the motorbike and why I decided to walk back to this area to investigate further. I found a building nearby the was partially demolished and decided to walk inside and found a few tags that I would consider to be relatively decent.

I particularly like the transitional work that they did on the N and the O. That "tear" is pretty unique and not something that just everyone does. I mean, it still isn't fantastic but it is a lot better than much of the quickly made trash that we see regularly in places where it is presumed the artists didn't have permission to do this. In this case though, this building is clearly slated for removal at some point and the people who were working on it must have been able to take their time while doing their craft.

Things like this, although they are likely quite simple, make me smile more than tags do. I get that the artist wants to have their work recognized and that tags are the best way to make this happen. I dunno, I guess I just like things to be a bit more whimsical from time to time.

This one is rather amateurish, but I guess it is ok. Not great.. just ok. I do appreciate that the people who did all of these did it on the interior of a building that is clearly abandoned.

The other building nearby is a little more "iffy" as far as whether or not the people should have done it.

This building was nearby and hasn't been demolished yet. I suppose it still could be used if people really wanted to do something with it. I would imagine that it doesn't increase the resale value to anyone considering buying and refurbing it though. I know that I would be very hesitant to rent/buy a property that is covered in graffiti out of fear of them putting it back after I repaint the place.

It appears to me as though there probably wont be any new tags that pop up here but there is still room for others in the back of the initial building that is definitely slated to be razed as soon as someone purchases the land. So if you are an aspiring street-artist, here is the the approximate location. Please note that the Indian restaurant that is featured in that g-maps location is NOT the abandoned building. It is merely nearby there and this is just a starting point for you to figure it out from there. Trust me, it will be evident as you walk past it. It is within 100 meters of there.

I think that is everyone's fear that the graffiti will reappear after a fresh coat of paint has been applied. We had a group of hooded kids doing our area once and I was in the process of selling my house. I say once as they were treated a little roughly and never came back and all it takes is a little guidance some times.

I agree. There are some people out there that thinks this beautifies the world and for the most part I think those people are wrong. Just like I wouldn't want everything to be covered in Picasso without permission, the street art, regardless of the perceived quality, is trash if it is done on someone else's property without permission.

Exactly as it is not your property to make pretty and you have not got the permission to trash. Some graffiti is great and can add value in a "banksy" painting your wall. I saw one of his art works on an old prison wall in reading and it looked great. This is now protected by a glass case.

Even Banksy hates a lot of this stuff. Watch "exit through the gift shop" if you get a chance. It's a documentary about the monetization of street art and how Banksy wants nothing to do with it.

I see not just tags but also other artworks created by talented artists on public walls, and I find them amazing and impressive. For me, this is completely fine as long as there is permission, and the location is either unused or set to be demolished.

that is precisely the way that i feel. Even if it is something amazing and wonderful, a piece that was done on someone else's land without permission is a really awful thing to do.

It would be better if they've showed their talent in art somewhere, where people recognize it as a passion and love for art. Whoever did this must have a very talented hand and wide imagination 🙌.

I have posted in the past about how there are people that have tried to set up places where artists are allowed to do what they want without penalty. But for various reasons these places always end up getting shut down. It's a shame, because a real street-artist who doesn't need to worry about getting in trouble has the time to do a much better job.
