This land is NOT for sale in Thailand

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITYlast year

Lately I have been learning to read a bit of Thai. It's fun to me because while I find the language quite difficult to pronounce exactly correctly, the written language is something that I am managing to learn a lot faster than memorizing words and their tones.

If you are every riding around Thailand you will see signs all over the place and for the most part they keep these signs simple so that people can quickly understand what they are on about as they pass by in their cars or on motorbikes.

This is a fun one that I recently saw on the side of the road.

The first sentence just explains how large the land is that you are looking at and for the most part they will include a phone number so you can find out how much it costs. This one though, in big letters after the land size is described just says "mai kai" which means "not for sale."

I wonder if the owner of this land is just a joker or has been getting harassed by a certain group of people that want to buy the land even though he (or she) insists the land isn't actually for sale. Well, it is all very clear now but I just find it amusing that someone would put up a sign to state that something IS NOT for sale rather than the other way around.

It's printed on vinyl and has breeze flow areas on it so that it can stand up in the wind. So I guess whoever is involved doesn't plan on selling it anytime soon!

Okay, you definitely won't find signs like that here 🤣, everything is often for sell and almost always in Chinese and Khmer, with English now an occasional language for real estate. More and more now though there are "land for sell" signs in exclusively Chinese because the locals know the mainland Chinese will gladly pay more -than-market values.

That is strange to me that they allow the land to be sold to anyone regardless of nationality. Seems like a lose/ lose for the locals especially if they are not wealthy.

Foreigners can't technically own land here, but $50,000 cash will give you a Cambodian passport and allow one to conduct millionaire business more easily and enjoy all the rights of a citizen.
