😒 The Happiest Dishwasher In Cambodia 🧼 & Other Inter-Household News 📻

Nobody loathes doing housework more than Srey-Yuu, especially washing the dishes, as you can see by her facial expression.

Bathroom Buddy 🕷️

IMG_6065.JPG

While visiting the outhouse for some morning relief, I saw this little thing on the wall and snapped a pic. I've not seen many spiders with any green coloring at all, so I found this quite interesting. Obviously this color scheme is more suited for the forest instead of the bathroom, but this little arachnid was still a welcome guest.

Project Erosion Control 🪨

1.JPG

In this photo my hours of work seems so miniscule, but you can see in the bottom left I built up rocks to help keep the river from eating more of our land. This particular spot is where the river turns away from us a bit, so the water particularly wants to erode this location. I'd love to turn this into a rock bridge/dam, but that will be a multi-week project.

Monkey-B The Reader 📚

2.JPG

Monkey-B is also not fond of housework, and would rather spend her days reading, although we only have a handful of English books at the moment. The girls want the whole Harry Potter collection, but I forgot before leaving the USA how hard it is to get good books in Cambodia.

Go Morning Glory 🌱

3.JPG

Even though we lack a proper composting area and it would take a several months before we'd have the amount we need, we are able to grow a few things here and there. My wife planted some morning glory (water spinach) in one of our boxes, and it's finally starting to grow. Soon we'll be munching on homegrown greens.

Pineapple In Paradise 🍍

4.JPG

I once shared this pineapple on the cliffside before the land belonged to my wife (illegal for a foreign citizen to own land in Cambodia), but now this little fruit is part of the land we live on. The pineapple has a good view, but its roots are in solid rock, surprised it has grown to be the size it is while starved of nutrients.

The View ⛰️

IMG_6079.JPG

While coming back up from the river erosion control project, Monkey-B noticed the moon was out in the middle of the day, so I snapped a pic to share with you all. It seemed big to me at the time, but the moon is only a tiny white blob in the corner of the photo.

Cut, Cut, Then Cut Some More 🥷

IMG_6080.JPG

While I've been mostly stuck behind the computer trying to fund this project, Pov has been able to work outdoors a bit, mostly cutting the grass and plants on the hillside. Two huge boulders were uncovered in this process, and now I'm considering making them some kind of relaxation space.

The Best For Last 😠

IMG_6073.JPG

We are back to the image you saw in the thumbnail again, sans fancy text. Srey-Yuu is not very good at hiding her emotional state, something I occasionally try and work with her on. I consider myself a zen master of keeping my emotions hidden from others, perhaps not the healthiest thing in the world, but the only way I've found to survive in Cambodia as long as I have. Most important is that she doesn't perform this death stare with any of her teachers at school.

Until next time my fellow Hivers....

Unker Dave is a brilliant dishwasher. My first full time job was in the cafe, because I enjoyed making coffee. But then the manager "promote" me to look after the kitchen sink. Initially I felt exactly the same like Srey-yuu in that photo. But then after sometime, I figured it's actually the best hiding spot from other work. I don't need to deal with customer complaint on food quality anymore. I don't need to go out and serve food or collect dishes anymore. I don't need to worry if client start asking tons of question on why the coffee so expensive. Best part of it, anytime the boss came to visit, I'm in the kitchen sink "busy" doing my work. And I think I got my supervisor badge because I am a happy dishwasher 🤣 Even until today, I don't mind to do the dish. Tell her, try cooking 🤣

Oh that moon looks pretty big already, consider the distance. I guess you can capture clearer and even bigger moon by using a zoom lens, but then you'll lose the surrounding as comparison.

I have also been a dishwasher for many years. I've done every restaurant job, and think I still like being a dishwasher the most, just leave me alone and let me listen to my headphones. As long as the dishes are clean, nobody can complain, I totally agree. When I mention teaching Srey-Yuu how to make one of my Indian style dishes, she just walks away 😂.

Hahaha. I laughed at the "death stare"...I can imagine Srey-Yuu´s face, but I understood her. I was like that.... as a small kid I had disadvantages as I had 5 brothers. At one time the water in our area had been cut off because of maintenance. I had to wash the dishes in 2 huge containers and got the water from a plastic drum exactly like yours, and my brothers were out playing. Unfair, isn´t it!? Cheer-up Srey-Yuu!

Oh no, five brothers, I can only imagine how hard that was on you at times, but I bet it also made you very tough. Our barrel catches rainwater, but when it doesn't rain, it's hard for Srey-Yuu to reach in the barrel far enough to get a scoop of water.

!LOL

You didn't make it any easier by taking a picture of her 😂. Dude, when I was her age, I also wasn't the most amused and though I would rather do dishes, I get where she's coming from.

But I also understand the importance of what you're trying to teach her, so that no one will ever use that against her. Emotions are healthy, but it's not safe to share them with everyone. Hope she'll learn to express herself in a healthy way.

Haha, I didn't care too much for the dishes either when I was a kid, but I looked putting them away. There are many kids in are village who have to hunt with a slingshot to have lunch, so we try and remind her how easy she has it in the scale of things here.

That's so true or kids who have to walk miles in search for water...

lol about her experssion about washing the dishes. awwwww.

Pineapple In Paradise

You know I spent most of my life not being aware that a pineapple plant (tree?) only grows one fruit at a time. I figured they were like apple trees. I blame this on the fact that I grew up in USA and the only pineapples I ever saw were in a can made by Dole.

It was definitely many years of eating pineapples before I saw one in the ground. I always assumed it was a bush with several fruits, perhaps like agave or something, but I remember seeing one in a yard in Florida while there on vacation as a child, MIND BLOWN!!

When I was new in Thailand and someone showed me a pineapple tree my mind was blown as well. I thought for sure that they were pulling my leg. It seems like a very inefficient system and now I understand why a pineapple is so expensive in supermarkets in my home country.

but its roots are in solid rock, surprised it has grown to be the size it is while starved of nutrients

There is a kind of pineaple species that grow fertily on the rock. In my wife's hometown, the species become the major income for the local people from cultivating the pineapple. The species is called Nanas Batu or Pineaple stone.
The taste is sweeter than other species.

Very cool, I think we need that variety of pineapple to grow here. Our little pineapple is not very happy in the rocks.

Srey Yu would be mad if she knew her expression gave me chuckles. First post to see after a long hard day's work which included doing dishes. But not quite like that haha.

Congratulations on the pineapple ownership!

We had a sink at our previous place, and we also didn't have to occasionally wash the dishes in the rain, so I can sympathize with her lack of motivation for this new dishwashing situation. Luckily it's not permanent, but will have to work until construction is finished.

Good day sir. I can imagine the air over there. SO fresh yet so breezy early in the morning. With birds singing beside your ear and so on. Such peaceful and wonderful place sir.

Very true, and I can only hope I never see a cobra of any kind. Apparently the monocled cobra is very common here.

Cobra very common here? That's kinda scary sir. Some medicine for emergency is a must sir. Just in case

I am not trying to encounter one, so my eyes are always scanning for any snake threats.

Lmao Srey-Yuu really doesn't really have a good poker face, eh?

That spider is giving me the heebie-jeebies. I'm moving further north!

I guess if she was a master of emotions, I'd never be able to know what she's really thinking, so I totally agree with you. Not many spiders in your latitude I assume, but I am sure there are some who've adapted to the extreme temps.

Yep, we have a few spiders that brave the elements. Luckily they're not dangerous species, but they do seem rather plentiful considering their extremely short growing months. The thing that amuses me every year is the big black house flies in the spring! They warm up in the sun and are able to fly around a bit, but once the sun gets lower (it no longer fully sets but it does get colder when it's low) they will get too cold to fly and just drop out of the air wherever they are. The next day they will warm up and continue their random journey lol

100% agree, it's a good thing her poker face isn't all that good... yet. :p

Impressive, I guess where there's a will there's a way, I have even heard several frog species can freeze solid and come back to life.

Hah, yeah, dishes are far from my favourite, too. And that's a helluva expression she's got going on. Perfected already!

She's so good at this expression that sometimes she simply shows the face and then I immediately ask if anyone else can do the dishes.

Srey-Yuu I feel your pain. That's how I look if I have to vacuum. Your death stare is better than mine. I should try harder.

I sometimes run in fear when I see that look on her face. When that look is on Pov's face, I might as well run for the hills.

I can relate to Srey-Yuu's facial expression if I don't like what I'm doing.

Sorry Srey-Yuu your dad loves to tease you.

She eventually always gets her revenge in the end, but it's all in good fun.

I saw Srey-Yuu immediately thought of my daughter and granddaughter. They are similar haha 😆😆

Haha, you know the stare of death very well too.

Srey-Yuu certainly has the death stare down pat 😂 Your home grown food is coming along nicely.

She certainly does, and she is almost capable of instilling the same fear her mother does 😁. I can't wait til we get a few more truckloads of dirt, then we'll start trying to create and/or find some topsoil so we can really get the gardening going.

Washing dishes is a boring chore so we can't expect her to be too happy.

Yes, I can't blame here, but she certainly can't hide her enthusiasm 😁.

Definitely not a happy camper!

You got that right, but with a few lame jokes I can turn that into a smile.

You're right, I think she fell at school, but I can't remember.
