Remember this guy with terrible mange? Check him out now!

Mange is a horrible parasite infection that is extremely common with stray animals that live in hot and humid environments such and Thailand although it is extremely common in other parts of the world. It is caused by microscopic parasites that just like ticks, feed on the animal. For reasons I do not understand this also results in the loss of hair / fur and intense itchiness that encourages the dog (or cat) to scratch and scratch and scratch and scratch.

Eventually this results in the breaking of the skin and this leads to even more parasites such as ticks or in the worst situations maggots and rotting flesh.

We found this very young puppy alone and in terrible shape about a month and a half ago.

He was so horribly infested that he couldn't even open his eyes for the most part and yet, despite all of this, would wag his tail and really liked being touched - which was probably something that didn't happen very often for it since animals that look sickly like this are very unlikely to be approached by most people, for obvious and tragic reasons. Well, Krabi Animal Welfare's volunteers WILL approach a dog in this condition and we will do everything that we can to help.

First we administered a medicated bath several times a week and the pup was very receptive to this even though I think it is pretty well known that most dogs would prefer to not have baths. In just a few sessions he had already begun to regrow his hair as the parasites were killed by the shampoo

We got to see this poor abandoned animal's eyes for the first time after a few baths and in just a few weeks he looked like a totally different animal. We then administered a broad spectrum edible anti-parasite medicine that lasts up to 12 weeks with its protection. Here we are, just a mere 6 weeks later and look at how he has progressed.

You could show those pictures to people and I think most people would think that there is no chance they are the same dog but I assure you that it is. I don't know if he understands why he is feeling so much better but really, it doesn't matter because he DOES and he looks so much better too and is a real cutie!

Isn't it amazing how just a little bit of compassion can totally change a sweet little pup's life? All in, the cost of this treatment was around $10 and just a little bit of our time. I would really like for the general population of Thailand to get some sort of an education about how easy and inexpensive it actually is to treat this problem because many times when we are scouting out new areas we see lots of dogs that are just "mange-ing away" and it really doesn't take much to help them. I wish more people could understand this.

In the meantime I'll leave you with the same plea that I always do:

  • Please adopt, do not buy dogs or cats - there are millions of them looking for homes right now
  • Please volunteer your time or money to any animal welfare organization or shelter that is near you. They always need help and appreciate it.

It's probably not so much knowing the costs it's probably because most don't have the compassion to help which needs to be there in the first place, still thank you guys for clearly saving this cutie.

Wow, I'm amazed that this is all it takes. When i lived in Thailand I would see animals covered in mange all the time and had no idea how easy it was to correct it. Had I known, I would have helped a lot more than I did. I honestly didn't know that a couple of baths and a chewable could do this much. I hope that the community that you work with starts to realize that this is not a difficult thing to treat because every community that I ever lived in there had dogs that were "halfway owned" in that some people would feed it, but not really look after it other than that. I would be willing to bet that if these same people knew that a $15 tablet could cure this problem that at least some of them would be willing to get it.

That is an absolutely incredible transformation, you're doing good deeds. $10 can be spent spent so many ways, but this is a pretty efficient use of it.

We are very fortunate to have met the owners of the largest and most respected animal hospital in the region. They are not just 3 generations of medical professionals (which is quite an achievement!) but also massively compassionate and supportive of what we are doing here. They never make a profit off of us and at times, they probably lose money by helping us. We couldn't do nearly as much as we do if they charged us "retail" price for the work they do and we are eternally grateful to them.
