We couldn't do it without our volunteers

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY2 years ago

There was a time when our foundation was bringing in enough donations that we were able to afford to pay some staff members a salary but after nearly 2 years of no tourism - which was where a majority of our funding came from, we have really had to strip back on expenses and now almost everyone who works with us does so out of their love for animals. The few that we can afford to pay, could easily make far more money to do almost anything else with their time and we are just extremely grateful that most of our staff have stuck with us through the lean times.

A big part of any charitable organization is that you are actually using the donations for the causes that the organization claims that they are using them for. There are a lot of organizations out there that claim to be non-profits but what this really means is that the "company" doesn't generate any money or capital for shareholders, so to speak. This doesn't mean that this money isn't siphoned off in order to pay lavish salaries for the people involved. I am happy to say that although we are a small organization, we have never done this and most of our workers, even when things were good, were working for free.

Love and compassion for animals isn't something that can be bought. Either you do or you don't and for us, many of us have actually taken money out of our own bank accounts to keep the lights on, so to speak, at Krabi Animal Welfare. This isn't an outreach for sympathy or anything like this because we aren't looking for recognition for our actions. I am happy to say that all of the members our our skeleton crew are genuinely committed to the cause of helping to improve the lives of the strays of Krabi province and this is evident in our day-to-day work.

Go back in time about 2-3 years and we had so many tourist volunteers lining up to visit and help that we actually had to turn some of them away. That all seems like a distant memory now but we are hopeful that the upcoming changes to Thailand's border policies will change it back to the way that it used to be. For the past 2 years or so, there hasn't really even been much reason for us to attempt to have fundraisers (which can sometimes be effective) because there isn't anyone here. No one is allowed to be.

It isn't just the people that would come to our facility, but also the relationships that we have formed with the various temples in the region since this is where stray animals normally flock to, since they at least have a chance of getting some food.

The monks in these temples have been absolutely instrumental in our efforts because they are far more aware of the daily comings and goings of the animal population that lives at basically every temple in Thailand. Without their help, our jobs would be considerably more difficult because it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to remember which dogs have been treated and which haven't, and since our resource levels are so low, it is imperative that we use what little we have in the most efficient way possible.

Without their help, we might not have been able to help nearly as many temple dogs and cats as we have in the past because try as we may, a lot of the animals simply look the same. Imagine trying to distinguish between which black dogs you have already treated for parasites, and which ones you haven't. We can't do this because we work at a dozen temples as well as in the community in general. The monks on the other hand, are very familiar with the various quirks that make each animal unique and are a very important part of why we are able to effectively treat entire packs without accidentally double-dosing any animal. For them, we are also very grateful because of course, they are not paid for this in any way.

Lastly, we need to thank our volunteers in the U.K. who have worked to put donation boxes around the country and to hold events where desperately needed funding is gathered. They, again, receive no financial compensation for this.

It all comes down to a big family that we have created around the world: We couldn't continue to do what we do for Krabi if any of the pieces of this puzzle were missing and for that, we are extremely grateful.

You guys are the real heroes believe it or not but you are, you come in and help defenceless animals, I really hope things begin to open but the government continues playing their covid game with the people especially when it comes to travel.

unfortunately the travel ban to the United States doesn't have anything to do with Covid... there isn't any clear reasoning behind why they stopped it actually other than their statement about it being prevention of rabies spreading in USA.

Very cool you have some funding help from the UK, a small amount of money there goes a long way in Thailand. I never thought about a pack of black dogs and how easy it would be to confuse them for one another and double-dose. Cheers to the locals for knowing their personality quirks.

yeah, it would be infinitely more difficult if it weren't for them pitching in. A double dose probably wouldn't have any adverse affect on the dog, it's just a waste of money. On one instance we brought in a dog to have it sterilized only to find out from the vet that the operation had already been done, by us. Thankfully the vet kept good records of this and was able to determine that the process was already complete before opening her up.
