Hello dear friends, today my husband took me on the bike to a big Chinese store. There are so many different ingredients from China there. They have all ingredients we need but everything is also very expensive.

Most those vegetables and fruits are from abroad. A frist I think I will buy some fruits but after I saw price I changed my mind. An apple is 20rsd, it’s 1$. One peppers is 35rsd and one broccoli is 75srd.

I think they are not delicious for these prices. I will eat plenty of them when I go back my country. I am just telling you the prices of vegetables we love to eat and other vegetables are expensive the same.

This is the most variety of vegetables in Suriname. There is more variety here than in my area, so I got some vegetables from there.

The pineapple we just buy to eat two times in over two years we are living in Suriname.

There are different prices for the bottle gourds, for one is 30srd to 50srd.

We bought ingredients that we don't have near my place.

The small Chinese stores do not have many of these ingredients, so when we run out of them we need to go there.

The peanuts were one kilo for 125 SRD, and I din't want to buy them but my husband said he loves to eat them, so we bought them.

This day was a very tiring day, we biked nearly three hours but I enjoyed getting some ingredients we need. Have a great day everyone.

Hello @sreypov and @justineparke!
The store you were in is like the Asian Shop I visit here in my district where I get some exotic fruits or veggies. I guess the products are similar. Although I would say the prices there are higher than here even if some products were imported. I am seeing now in most supermarkets here that they are adapting the veggies sold in tropical countries in Asia.

Before, pak choi was not available here nor the sweet potatoes, but more and more farmers are discovering our asian veggies so they crop them in plastic tents. We live in Spain half year during winter time. Have you heard about the plastic tents in Almeria, Spain? That´s where most fruits and veggies come from distributed in western Europe. The Netherlands are also competing with these tent farmers as well as Italy. But Almeria is the main source because they do not have the hard winter. It is also the main source of Spain´s GDP as well as their tourism industry. The point is, the ecology of Almeria is a worse case scenario. These plastic wastes are not properly processed when their life has ended and is a huge problem in the area. There was a time when a dead whale had been discovered in the nearby shore and finding the cause of its death, they found so many plastic waste in his abdomen... A pity for the fishes in the region!

It's ok dear, I do understand it. Have a lovely day there in Suriname.

I've seen a documentary film about that place in Spain where they grow like this for kilometers in every direction. It is definitely hideous and unsustainable, but it's not as damaging as the way farmers in the USA grow most things.

Hi Justine,
In what way do farmers grow in the US? Is it about the issue of GMO crops? GMO crops are still prohibited in the EU. The lobby of the Greens are strong against it. I probably won't buy these products myself..

The GMOs definitely, also the monocrop farming destroys the soil, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and lots of erosion. Where I'm from it's corn and soy as far as the eye can see, and you'll have to drive your car at least 15km just to buy a tomato or anything fresh.

It makes no sense to farm like this, but the tax incentives cause profit-driven farmers to play along with the government incentives. Big meat, dairy, corn, soy, and wheat subsidies means those are the cheapest ingredients available, so it leaves vegan who likes whole foods having to spend 40% more on groceries every month compared to a processed-food eater.

That is such a shame, making food unaffordable for all except the very well-off. Even then, it is ridiculous! I know you want to go back to your country, and I know Suriname is not the place for you to be, but, hopefully, things will change for the better and you will either be able to come to the US, Canada, or perhaps back home. One can lead to the other.

In the meantime, I hope you and your family stay safe and healthy, and, it is always good to see a post from you!

Yes, I wish I can get interview soon and get the visas to USA this year and if we can’t get the visas I would to come back home. Thank you very my dear for your kind words and time. Have a beautiful day.

A three hour bike ride is very far. I am happy you got some different food. I look forward to your new recipe. Too bad the prices are so high. I think you need to go in the dark and pick some things from the people's yard. They won't miss it haha.

I always look for your food when I come home from work because I'm too tired to cook so I eat your food with my eyes.

I send you good wishes my friends!

Oh really? I wanted to share all my foods with you my friend and I hope to taste your foods too. Yesterday at night Justin with me try to pick green papaya nearly the road but we just go to look at them, we really scary to do it hahaha. But today my husband got waterlily in the public canal and I made a sour soup, my family like eating. Thank you for your kind words 😍.

it's tragic that things like vegetables have become a premium item. Thankfully that hasn't happened here... yet. Why no veg? Are farmers just not working or something? I remember your posts from your local markets and it seemed like slim pickins there as well.

Yes, in the store in my place, they has a little vegetables for selling, we tired to eat the same vegetables every day. Maybe two or three month ago they said because have rain too much make so many vegetables are broken but last month and now not have rain more here and still have a little vegetables. And everything are expensive. Thank you for stopping by.

The only market that has a little bit of variety, but the prices are so outrageous we can only look. Being presented with an unaffordable selection of fruits and veg is the same as having no choices at all.

Yeah, but the Chinese shop looks really big and clean.
Your journey is also very pleasant to this shop walking by bicycle, I like that.
Thank you for sharing your brother's day here.

This Chinese store is clean and good more than the other store in Suriname.

Such selection there (quite different from here) - too bad it is all so expensive.
Glad you could get the ingredients you wanted!

Vegetables are very expensive, and people's salaries are low but the most of people's are landowners. Thank you for your kind words🙂

I think that some of the "fresh" produce/products are/were cheaper at the (Central) market(s), but don't know if those are open. Of course certain items you won't find at the marketplace, so you have to go to Gao Ming.

We have only bicycle and here very difficult to find taxi, so we are hard to find cheaper vegetables or different vegetables. Gao Ming is a good store, they have more Asia ingredients. Thank you for your feedback.

True, where you guys are, is really difficult to travel to.
