So here we are at Uf Mar on Kei Kecil Island.
We spent several days at Uf rolling around on the water. It was very far from a comfortable anchorage and we were becoming sleep deprived. And after a voyage from Australia to Indonesia, some good sleep was very much needed. Some of us decided to move to Tual, the main port of Kei Kecil, at the northern end of the island. Oh what a beautifully calm anchorage it was. Great to have a restful night, until 4.30am that is. That was when the 3 mosques around us started their morning prayers. After a couple of nights they became soothing, like a lullaby to send us back to sleep.
Setting foot on shore came with its own challenges. We were directed to tie the dinghies up to the back of the coast guard boats, jump from one to the other, then take a running step across a huge round floating fender then onto the concrete jetty. Maybe it's an audition for the Ninja Warriors TV series? Challenging manoeuvre for those of us with shorter legs, especially for yachtie mate Carol, who is the little one of our group.

As soon as we set foot on land I felt embraced by Asia. This is the sight, smell and feel I have been missing for 3 years now, thanks to the covid 19 pandemic. The market stalls, the mom and pop shops, the bbqs with hot coals glowing ready to cook satay sticks, the scooters & taxi vans, the honking of horns and the locals calling "halo, halo".
We wandered the streets, admired the old buildings, chatted to school kids, got secretly videoed and braved the busy vehicular bridge over the water on foot. With no footpath. With lots of cars, trucks and scooters coming straight at us.
We ate at a little warung where Pop whipped up bowls of delicious noodle soup at his cooking station on the street. We were followed by giggling children who smiled shyly, until you waved at them. That got them laughing and waving back, calling "Halo mister ".

an interesting mix of religions here
love the road block
We hired a driver to show us more of the natural beauty that Kei Kecil has to offer. The Hawang caves were stunning, with stalagmites and stalactites and crystal clear fresh water in the caves. We jumped in for a cooling swim and it was just perfect on a hot, humid day.
We stopped for a swim at Ngurbloat Beach, also known as Long Beach, and it was spectacular. Fine white sand, crystal clear water turning to aqua as it got deeper. Little timber shelters lined the beach, with food and drink stalls set behind them. We were one of only a handful of groups there but I can just imagine how busy it must get on Sundays when locals have their day off. Such a magnificent beach to chill out at, with a couple of icy cold bintang and some local cuisine. What more could you ask for?

Wow.. Sharon.. this is a really beautiful trip. It's really great to walk around streets that are sometimes not too modernised right where you can meet locals and talk to them. Hawang cave looks amazing. Wow.. so amazing. Beautiful trip. =) No turtles? ahahaha.. just joking. Just to have some fun. I enjoyed reading.
Lots af beautiful people and beautiful sights, but no turtles I'm afraid. I will keep exploring and keep snorkelling and c I ingredients, looking for the elusive turtles. 😎
WOnderful Maluku, There are many urban from Maluku in Jakarta and Bekasi. They are tough and strong people, I think it is a character of their geology. In Indonesia, people who live on near the sea have stronger character than in farming area. I think the name of Kei family in Bekasi is from Kei Kecil.
The people here are so lovely and friendly, and very proud of their heritage.
Incredible .. the beautiful places you visit there, delicious culinary, traditional markets, cute children, local residents, the diversity of religions there, Hawang cave with very clear water to the beach with white sand. My eyes are spoiled by the photos you share. Thank you my friend 👍🙏
I'm very happy to hear that I have spoilt your eyes. Every day is a new adventure and I'm loving it.
