View on the past - This is my entry for the #monomad challenge

in Black And White2 years ago

The village I live in has a bit of a history... At first, there was no village, just clay pits and brick factories. To be able to get the clay and the bricks to where they were needed, they dug a canal. The factories grew and grew, and more and more people from the surrounding villages came to work there. As we are speaking end of 1880, beginning 1910's, people didn't have a car, many didn't even have a bike or anything, so they needed to come on foot.
Of course, thinking of that time period, and a very religious area, you can imagine that this was an issue, because after working long hours in the factory, still needing to walk home for 5 to 15 kilometers, there was little time left to go to church, or it would be too late.
The solution? They started the building of the church of Saint Joseph! And where there's a church, there's shops (and cafe's). And where there's shops (and cafe's), people come to live. And that's how the little village of Saint Joseph was founded!

Fast forward to the present... The factories are no longer in the village, and the place where they used to be will be rebuilt to a living- and recreationspace. Luckily with respect for some of the remains of the past (the chimney of one of the factories for instance). The canal is still used for transportation over water, but no boats stop to drop their loads in Saint Joseph anymore. And the shops, and nearly all the cafe's are gone...
But it still is a lovely place to live, and to walk, because where they used to dig for clay, are now nature reserves. So walking around there with an 800mm lens, is just pure pleasure!
And when you look into the right direction, of the new industrial park, with the new brick factory, you see nothing...
But if you look at the right moment, with the 800mm, on a hazy day... you can sometimes relive some hints of the past!
