This past week, the rice fields in several villages in my city entered their fruiting period. Usually, during this fruiting period, various pests will appear and disturb their rice plants. One of them is bird pests. To anticipate this, the farmers have prepared all means to deal with it, and I will share it here.
Based on my brief observation this morning in their rice fields, there are three ways or techniques that are used by farmers in my village to anticipate bird pest attacks. Here I will describe them one by one:
First technique: The use of a Slingshot
The use of slingshots helps farmers drive away flocks of birds in their fields. The slingshot ammunition used comes from clay.
Second technique: The Sound of a Used Can
Used cans are placed in the middle of the rice fields and ropes are stretched for propulsion. Farmers only need to control it from a distance to create noise to scare away birds that will land in their fields.
Third technique: Use of Trap Nets
This technique has been passed down from generation to generation, given the location of their rice fields, which are close to hills with dense trees that are often used as bird nests.
Techniques for using trapping nets involve spreading nets over rice plants. Even though it requires additional costs, this effort is more humane than having to hunt birds while eating rice grains.
And, here are some moments when some birds were caught in the traps and the farmers approached them.
The farmers have put in a lot of effort, and hopefully, in the coming months, they will reap the rewards.
