MONOMAD: Kupiah Ija Syam

This skullcap is claimed to be the Acehnese people's skullcap, a variation of the Meukeutop skullcap.

In an ethnographic study at the beginning of the 20th century, J. Kreemer stated in his Dutch-language work that the raw material for the skullcap was imported from the Middle East and then exclusively produced in several places in Aceh, so the skullcap's name refers to the origin of the cloth, namely Kupiah Ija Syam.

Wegens de gestyleerde kalimah (= Arabische letterteekens)-versieringen, welke deze mutsen doorgaans vertoonen, noemt men ze ook wel koepiah meukeutob (Arab maktoeb = beschreven) d. i. lett.: "beschreven mutsen", en naar de ingevoerde zijden stof (idja Tsjam, G: roedjö Sam), waarvan ze gemaakt zijn, worden ze ook koepiah idja Tsjam, d. i. "mutsen van stof uit Syrië" geheeten.

I asked a friend to demonstrate how to put on the skullcap. Wow, he appears to be an Acehnese man in antique images.
