Food in monochrome can be hot

Hello Hive friends, as many times before, I will try again to show you how fantastic food can be in black and white. This time it is, hmmm home cook but still comparable with any haut de cuisine. Our grandmas knew the best and we would be nothing but stupid if we wouldn't continue this tradition.

Meat is on our menu since cave times. Why is it so important? They have proteins for instance. Meat is a good source of high-quality protein, which is essential for building and repairing tissues, producing enzymes and hormones, and supporting various bodily functions. Meat, particularly red meat, contains important nutrients like iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and vitamin D. These nutrients are involved in the formation of red blood cells, immune function, and bone health. Not to forget, there are also fatty acids. Certain types of meat, such as fatty fish like salmon, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are beneficial for heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation. So why all the agonizing of meat then? Well, modern meat production is far away from what it should be. Animals are treated badly, full of antibiotics and receiving bad diets. If you add a lot of stress hormones to it, you get bad-quality meat.

Oh my, this is something. Here you can see štruklji (pronounced shtrook-lee). Traditional Slovenian rolled dumplings or strudels. They are a popular dish in Slovenia and neighboring regions, such as Croatia and Austria. Štruklji can be served as a main course or as a dessert, depending on the filling and preparation.

The basic preparation involves a dough that is rolled out thinly, and then a filling is spread on top. The dough is then rolled into a log shape and either baked, boiled, or steamed. Once cooked, the štruklji are typically sliced into rounds or diagonal sections and served.

The fillings for štruklji can vary widely, offering both sweet and savory options. For me, the salty option is the best. it can be served as a soup or as a side dish with some yummy gravy. Like I said, grannies knew best.

And let's finish with good old apple pie. Nothing can compete with its tartness, acidic profile and yets balanced sweetness to it. How can one finish better than with a comfortable dessert like this?
