Mare of Easttown, Craig Zobel, 2021

Easttown Mare is a provincial detective from Pennsylvania. Constantly cold and wet country where apparently nothing happens. There, where everyone knows Mare and Mare knows everyone, the destinies of each and every family are intertwined to the point that, if something happens, it affects everyone. Murders, lies, betrayals push the town and the citizens into a cone of shadow from which no light can be seen. Investigations are far from glossy and swagger does not reward. A country is shattered and Mare has to put the pieces together, at the same time as her private and personal life is a ship adrift.

In Easttown everything is extremely true, especially the pain that is transversal and spares no one. If the cases to be solved and the investigations place the HBO miniseries among the crime movies, the way in which the events are told returns the photograph of a borderline country, on the margins, of the provinces. Everything is downsized, everything is everyday, common, normal. In a word, everything is true. From tired faces, to junk food, from unpretentious homes, to unexpected events. Everything is human, material, angular, bitter, raw and cruel.

PLOT

Mare of Easttown, and not Murder of Easttown as unfortunately it has been translated into Italian (Murder in Easttown), because it concerns so much the psychology of a woman, Mare, destroyed by life after the loss of a child, the consequent divorce from her husband and others burdens that we do not reveal, as much as that of a community, Easttown precisely, which is as small and dull as Dogville was, traversed by terrible events, the opiate crisis, and the influence that all this has on those who remain.

The resolution of cases does not solve lives but only closes chapters, to open others. No happy ending because there is no end to the life that happens, to everyone, everywhere and in any case between lights and shadows. More shadows than lights.

Mare of Easttown is a series that is out of the ordinary precisely because it is common, human. The ordinariness, absurdly, is returned by extraordinary direction and interpretations. The result leaves no room for ratings that are less than five stars.
P.s. Kate Winslet is remarkable but everyone else is not joking too!

Mare di Easttown è una detective di un paese di provincia della Pennsylvania. Paese costantemente freddo e umido in cui apparentemente non accade nulla. Lì, dove tutti conoscono Mare e Mare conosce tutti, i destini di ciascuno e di ogni famiglia sono intrecciati a tal punto che, se qualcosa succede, riguarda tutti. Omicidi, menzogne, tradimenti spingono la cittadina e i cittadini in un cono d'ombra da cui non si intravede la luce. Le indagini sono tutt'altro che patinate e la spavalderia non premia. Un paese va in frantumi e a Mare tocca mettere assieme i pezzi, nello stesso momento in cui la sua vita privata e personale è una nave alla deriva.

A Easttown tutto è estremamente vero, soprattutto il dolore che è trasversale e non risparmia nessuno. Se i casi da risolvere e le indagini collocano la miniserie HBO tra i crime movies, la modalità con cui le vicende vengono narrate restituisce la fotografia di un paese borderline, ai margini, di provincia. Tutto è ridimensionato, tutto è quotidiano, comune, normale. In una parola, tutto è vero. Dai volti stanchi, al junk food, dalle abitazioni senza pretese, agli imprevisti. Tutto è umano, materico, spigoloso, amaro, crudo e crudele.

TRAMA

Mare of Easttown, e non Murder of Easttown come purtroppo è stata tradotta in italiano (Omicidio a Easttown), perché riguarda tanto la psicologia di una donna, Mare, distrutta dalla vita dopo la perdita di un figlio, il conseguente divorzio dal marito e altri oneri che non riveliamo, quanto quella di una comunità, Easttown appunto, che è piccola e ottusa come lo era Dogville, attraversata da eventi terribili, dalla crisi degli oppiacei, e dall’influenza che tutto questo ha su chi rimane.

La risoluzione dei casi non risolve le vite ma chiude soltanto dei capitoli, per aprirne altri. Nessun happy ending perché non c'è nessuna fine alla vita che accade, a tutti, ovunque e comunque tra luci e ombre. Più ombre che luci.

Mare of Easttown è una serie fuori dal comune proprio perché comune, umana. L'ordinarietà, per assurdo, è restituita da una regia e da interpretazioni straordinarie. Il risultato non lascia spazio a giudizi che siano meno di cinque stelle.
P.s. Kate Winslet è notevole ma anche tutti gli altri non scherzano!
